Kittyrose got a reaction from Alfred in how to orient a gradient fill in a group of objects
Its OK - I have just found the answer. Apply the gradient so it is left to right and then use the fill tool from bottom to top but first choose 'stroke' instead of the default 'fill' from the context menu on the toolbar. I was applying the gradient to the background not the dots! There's a lot to learn!
