  1. Yes the margins do change if I click retrieve from printer. If I move the whole thing down the page to the bottom it does move down when printed, but not enough. I tried printing another file with the same information but larger (5 x 7in) on A5 paper and portrait, which I had also set up and tested a couple of weeks ago, and this one is fine. In fact all the other wedding documents print fine, except for this one. Incidentally, I cant find out what the dotted green and red lines mean in the print preview window. There is a solid black line which I assume represents the paper and a dotted green box which starts a short way down the 'paper' and extends the same amount past the bottom of the 'paper'. Then a red dotted box which starts at the same level as the green box and extends to the bottom of the 'paper'. The text appears to be correctly sited inside the green box, off the bottom of the 'paper', not the top. I have the paper set to A5 landscape in the printer properties and the paper size in the print dialogue box to 'defined by driver'. I just realised if I set the paper size there to A5, all the black, red and green boxes in the print preview line up, with the text centred as it should be, but still prints off the top of the page. Would it make any difference that I have the paper loaded into the printer in portrait position? The document is printing rotated so its orientation is correct, its just printing off the right hand side as viewed from the printer, which is the top of the document. Its an odd problem, especially as it still happens when I make a completely new file from scratch, without copying anything from the other one. If it is printing right for other people I might just have to give up and try to make it in Word, but would appreciate it if someone could tell me about the red and green boxes at least - for future reference! Thank you for your time.
  2. Sorry - I put the original file up with all the info. Just changing it - will resubmit in a minute
  3. Hi - thanks for replying. I am using Windows 10 and a Canon MG2450 printer - I know its just a cheap one, but it did fine with all my test prints and it will take thin card, whereas my laser printer will only take paper. I have attached the latest version of the file - I opened a new A5 document and designed it again from scratch and it still prints off the top. Thank you for your help.
  4. Hi - I am having trouble with printing a wedding invitation in AD. I have designed it in an A5 document and the placement looks fine on the screen. When I go to print however, it prints off the top of my landscape document, with a very large margin at the bottom. If I return to the document and select all and pull it down the page, it does print further down, but, even with the bottom line of text at the bottom edge of my document, it still does not print all of the logo at the top. Margins are set to 3mm and the printer preferences to A5 paper. I tried opening a new A5 document and using 'place' but that prints exactly the same. The annoying thing is that I have previously printed this document and it was fine. Now I am ready to print a hundred copies it is not! I dont know where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
  5. Wow! Thank you so much! You are a star! Your mini tutorial is exactly what I needed. I didnt know how to easily create lots of the same thing, but it worked like a dream. I have watched a lot of the beginners tutorials but there is so much to learn and so little time! With your help I have managed to create a dot file and get it drawn. Lets hope the glue pen or the toner pen works so I can foil the result. Now I just need to work on getting filled in text instead of outlines so I can foil the bride and groom's names. But that is another story! I cant thank you enough for taking the time to help me. I have migrated from Drawplus which I had in all its versions, and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to Affinity. Another long learning curve to attempt. Thanks again.
  6. Hi - thank you for the quick reply. I'm trying to import into Brother Canvas Workspace as I have a Scan n Cut machine and from there into the machine itself. (I just tried directly importing the file from Afdesign but it didnt recognise it.) I did try desperately to make a new brush with dots - using a tutorial from youtube which made a similar one to simulate snow falling. But it didnt work, and then I realised they were using AfPhoto, which had different settings to allow you to refine the brush. I couldnt make a similar one in Afdesign - but if you know how, could you point me in the right direction? Is this what you mean by uploading the AD file? test file dots.afdesign
  7. Hi - I'm trying to make a document with a band of randomly placed dots, about 2-3mm in size, across the top. I dont know if this is the correct way to do it but I used a squiggly hand-drawn line and made it dashed, then increased the thickness, rounded the ends of the dashes so they looked like dots and increased the distance apart from each other. I did this several times and overlaid them, which gave the effect I wanted. However, I want to foil the dots, and need to import the file into my cutter/plotter machine, which accepts SVG files, so that I can use the drawing function of the machine using a glue or toner pen to add glue or toner dots. I can then either cold or hot foil the document. However, when I export as an SVG, it is imported with the lines as originally drawn, except that they are dashed. None of the additional changes, such as rounded ends or increased distance between dots, are shown. Do I have to make any alterations to the export preferences to achieve the same result when importing into another program? Or is it likely to be the fault of the import in the cutter/plotter program? I have attached two files to show what I am trying to explain. Thank you
  8. Its OK - I have just found the answer. Apply the gradient so it is left to right and then use the fill tool from bottom to top but first choose 'stroke' instead of the default 'fill' from the context menu on the toolbar. I was applying the gradient to the background not the dots! There's a lot to learn!
  9. Hi - I'm working in Affinity Designer and have an area of dots at the top of my document which I have made by using the vector brush and the dashed line controls, made up of several lines, which I have grouped. I want to apply a gradient fill to the dots, which I can do from the group-stroke flyout (not sure if that is correct termination!). But it applies the gradient from left to right (or reversed). I cant get it to apply the gradient from top to bottom which is what I want. I cant turn the group and resize it because of the way the dots have been made (there may be a better way but I'm very new to Designer and havent found one yet. If I apply the gradient and then use the fill tool the new gradient is applied to the spaces between the lines of dots, not the dots themselves. What am I doing wrong? Thank you - Caryn
