Alfred reacted to Dave Harris in Edit text content in symbols
Does using a text style help? That allows the different text to share formatting. Changing the style would change all the text in the symbols in the document. The caveat, currently, is that if you add another symbol instance after such a change, the new instance will notice the document uses the same style name with different formatting, and resolve the clash by renaming its style so that it preserves its original appearance. You'd need to either update the symbol after changing the text style, or else apply the document's text style to new symbol instances.
An option to say whether symbols with text styles should use their own style definition or the document's, would make this easier.

Alfred got a reaction from NilsFinken in Introduce Yourself
Welcome to the Affinity Forums, Mike. :)
You can install as many copies as you like for personal use. If you wanted to use the software for commercial purposes and you were sharing it with other users you would need additional licences, but as you're retired you probably don't need to concern yourself with such matters.

Alfred got a reaction from MJSfoto1956 in There's no apparent way to skew an object.
I agree that "skew" is a more appropriate term, and that it should replace "shear" in the Help text. My main point, however, was that both terms should be indexed so that anyone using either term would be able to find the Help topic.
I appreciate that Serif's view on this is likely to be somewhat skewed, but plumping for the less appropriate term as the only one to use in the Help strikes me as "shear" lunacy! :D

AD does have noise, but it's rather "well" hidden! Go to the Colour panel and click on the colour well next to the Opacity slider.

Alfred reacted to Patrick Connor in Latest AP Windows Version ...
You are correct, the startup time is longer for the customer beta because it initialises some debug info each time it's run. This doesn't happen in the release build. There are no other differences.
The testing/QA team were not aware that there is a difference on startup between Customer Beta and Release, they now are. Sorry for any misinformation.
(Alfred, the post has been restored, sorry)

Alfred got a reaction from Patrick Connor in Affinity Designer Workbook
From previous discussions, it's clear that the first retail version of Affinity Publisher will be fairly basic and it will be some years before the app has capabilities similar to those of PagePlus X9.

It's hidden alright! Haha... but once discovered, this works way easier than AI's noise layer effect. Thank you.

Alfred reacted to WREN in The Box Set by Wren
Hi everyone! I hope the new year has been good to everyone so far. I’ve been working on some new brushes and wanted to share the update! I've now doubled the total number of brushes since the inception of these sets. The Box Set now has 300 Brushes. If you purchased it from Gumroad you’ll find the set has been updated with all the new brushes and all you need to do is re-download it. New Old Set Consolidation I’ve consolidated all of the individual sets (Sumi-E, Hand Lettering, Pen&Ink etc) into two: Drawing & Painting. I want any future updates to be easy on everyone (including myself) so I figured just break it down like so: Drawing set New Charcoal and Graphite [Raster and Vector] Pen and Ink Hand Lettering Painting Set: New Watercolors [Raster] Sumi-E Painterly (Formerly Tubro Rad)
All of the individual sets have been discontinued (Unpublished from Gumroad) and if you purchased any of them you'll soon receive an E-mail with a link to download the corresponding set (drawing or painting - whichever one yours fell in) at no cost. Also, just for Members of this forum, the first 50 sets of the Drawing & Painting sets are completely free. Just follow the links and Enjoy! The Sample Set also has a few new additions in it and is still totally free. (if you downloaded it before Jan 15th go ahead and re-download the update.) RASTER BRUSHES! One of the most frequent questions I'm asked is, "Are there Raster versions of these brushes?" The answer to that has always secretly been "yes, but I don't think they're very good yet." I'm continually learning and experimenting with different brushes, textures, and effects while narrowing down how to make them feel and look good. Well, I've finally completed two sets that I think both accomplish just that! Charcoal and Graphite Drawing is THE foundation of how I think and approach image making (among other things). So it was only natural that it was the first on the list of brushes I wanted to make. It allowed me to focus on creating brushes that gave a variation in value and texture and also responded to the types of pressure that I was applying to the tablet. All of these brushes simulate various graphite pencils, compressed charcoal, colored pencils, and erasers. I am especially proud of the colored pencil which accumulates really nicely for gestalt blending effects. There is also a charcoal and graphite vector set. The first 11 brushes were designed to repeat infinitely so the path will look seamless as you draw. The others are designed for much shorter strokes/hatching.
Watercolor
My favorite medium is Watercolor. I like it because it forces me to rethink how I perceive and plan color and value. It's also a medium that reminds me to relinquish control and just let things flow. My favorite watercolorist is by far Winslow Homer, he could say a lot with a little and really make watercolor sing. These raster brushes are arranged in order of application: Washes, rounds, and then dry brushing (which I learned by studying Homer's paintings). They feel just as light and unforgiving as real watercolors can, and also give a nice array of textures and pearly color.
As always if you have any questions or just want to say hey, don’t hesitate to give me a shout here, on twitter (@jeflbrown) or send me an email hello@jefbrown.com. If you like my work spread the word, and if you made something awesome with my brushes I'd love to see it.
Cheers! PS The next set I am working on is inking. here's a preview of a brush I'm this close to getting to look and feel like a Copic marker. -

Thank you Alfred, too.

Please see the attachment to see what happens when I move the white node and the little vertical bar. (I also changed the main fill colour to match the "I want something like this" example.)

Alfred reacted to - S - in Brush Settings
I would also like to know this. I've been creating brushes in Affinity Photo, however I've noticed that there are certain features missing compared to Photoshop. Things like 'Initial Direction', Foreground/Background jitter, texture settings, etc. just aren't there, which would explain why a few people have had problems importing some Photoshop brushes.
I'm new to Affinity Photo, so maybe there's a way that I'm not aware of, but the closest I've managed to get to jittering between two colours is by manipulating the Hue Jitter 'Ramp', as shown in the below screenshot. However, this doesn't use your background colour at all, all it does is offset the Hue of your main colour around the colour wheel by a certain percentage. Therefore it's not a real solution, I just thought I'd share it until someone else comes along.
Screenshot:
NB: In the screenshot the left side of the ramp is at 100%, however it should be at 0%, as it's the same. Like this:

Alfred reacted to leifm in Illustration in Affinity Designer
Hi there everyone :)
I am very happy to have completed a winter illustration entirely in Affinity Designer using a Wacom Cintiq Pro 13. I have been experimenting with Designer in my spare time in order to try out a few ideas combining vectors with texture brushes. This one was done in designer 1.5 and I have to say it has treated me very well as I progressed towards making the piece work as a whole.
I do quite like clean shapes with a painterly/texured feel to them, and so with this one I feel that I am moving in the right direction at last. The project was sketched out from scratch and colour completed in Designer with a resolution of 5500x5500px.
My main takeaway I belive was to be patient util I could start getting a good feel for the paint performance in relation to zoom level. Also, being able to customise and set up custom brushes for my liking and to match previous experience for a more traditional illustrative approach. For brushes I started out with the Daub concept brushes pack but ended up picking them appart and to set up my own in the end :)
It would be great to hear about your experiences and feedback in general towards using affinity designer in illustration based workflow :)
