  1. It might be obvious to some people, but I was only aware of it because I read about it many years ago! It works because 1/81 is 0.012345679012345679012… So you get an effect similar to multiplying 142857 by positive integers up to and including 7, which works because 1/7 is 0.14285714285714…
  2. If you haven’t actually done so, it’s fun to investigate what happens when you multiply 12345679 by whole multiples of 9.
  3. You’re both correct, of course, but William has shot down his own argument about ‘Best regards’ not being a sentence, since the latter is shorthand for something like ‘I send you my best regards.’
  4. Named the Shape Tool in English (to avoid confusion with the kind of form that contains form fields for the user to fill in).
  5. A sentence comprises, at a minimum, a subject and either (a) an intransitive verb or (b) a transitive verb and an object. Where’s the verb in ‘Good day.’?
  6. <pedantry> segway = a motorized personal two-wheeled vehicle segue = a transition from one topic to another </pedantry>
  7. How can it be misconstrued? Well, you might think it was something to do with hamburgers! That’s exactly the point. Unlike ‘Affinity by Serif’ or any other collection of real words, it isn’t supposed to mean anything: it’s just a useful test ‘word’ for assessing the suitability of a font, since it contains all of the essential forms in a Latin alphabet.
  8. Perhaps something more neutral like Hamburgefonstiv could have been used instead — but that can be misconstrued, too!
  9. The colour wheel is HSL, which is an alternative representation of RGB, so choosing the black vertex of the triangle is equivalent to choosing (0,0,0) on the RGB sliders. You need to choose the CMYK true black swatch, as Walt advised.
  10. If the PDF file looks correct, forget about trying to figure out why direct printing doesn’t work as expected. Simply print the PDF from your default PDF viewer.
  11. When you paste the link, you should see a popup message saying Click on ‘Display as a link instead’ to make it look like this: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/55752-curated-list-of-free-for-commercial-use-fonts/
  12. As noted in the original post to this thread: It’s usually mapped to Microsoft Sans Serif (or MS Sans Serif).
  13. I’m confused. In your original post you wrote: It isn’t clear to me whether Control (⌃) is part of the Command Controller modifier that you’re trying to use.
  14. The command shortcut Ctrl+D is the Windows equivalent to Cmd+D, so it isn’t the appropriate shortcut for use on iPad.
  15. ‘Good day.’ isn’t really a sentence, it’s just an interjection. Discuss. Given that you can use a code number to mean exactly the same thing, what is the advantage of using a symbol that can’t be typed without a special font?
  16. Please be aware that you should only ‘convert to curves’ a copy of the text object, unless you’re certain that you’ll never want to edit the content.
  17. As Walt’s response implies, you’re not dealing with a widow here. If you want the last word of that sentence to move up to the previous line, you need to widen the text frame or reduce the tracking.
  18. The Ravie font is included with Microsoft Office products.
  19. An option for this is preferable, in my opinion. If the app simply remembers the last print range and that happened to be the entire document, you’re back to square one.
  20. A simple suggestion, but a great one. One wasted page is annoying, but 63 wasted pages is at least 63 times as annoying!
  21. Would I be correct in assuming that this is pasted text, copied from ParsiNegar?
  22. @Sam Neil’s report refers to “most Farsi/Arabic fonts” (so it’s not just Farsi) but Farsi is indeed RTL. It’s a modified version of the Arabic alphabet, extended to include letters needed for the Persian language.
  23. What path tidying can you do on your laptop that you can’t do (or can’t do as easily) on an iPad?
  24. I regularly use AnyFont to install fonts on my iPad, and the fonts installed via that route (including ones from the Poppins family) are listed and usable in the Affinity apps, despite the fact that fonts installed since iPadOS 12 or 13 aren’t included in the list of Configuration Profiles under ‘General > VPN & Device Management’ in the Settings app. Edit: I see that this appears to be an iPadOS 17 beta issue. At the time of writing, I’m still using iPadOS 15.7.5.
