Probeer het eens met drag/drop ipv place, dit werkt ook met pictureframes.

You know you're reacting in Dutch here to somebody from 'South Irish Coast' right? ;)

When I go to the PLACE command in the drop down menu the documents folder automatically opens but the option bottom right, as you see on the screen shot keeps changing. It never remains consistent.  It always opened with the AfPub option, which is to be expected, but sometimes it decides to open with .TXT,

Yes, I think this is a bug too. I had the exact same thing last weekend and I never switched to text myself before, it was just selected by itself while placing an image. At first I thought it was remembering a last setting (eventhough I never opened a txt-file by the program), but now I see you are having the same problem I'm sure it's something in the software here. So maybe you could add thison to the bug forum indeed.

  2. Anybody knows if there is a way in Designer to add a curve to a mask/crop layer? And if it's possible to draw a new curve with the pen tool on an existing crop layer (not touching the current 'crop'-curve)?

    So on this layer-type:

    image.png.b097cfb94fa68205e17e24e1932e55b9.png

I tried some different things, but so far without the result I'm after.

I understand we can use boolean tools when moving the mask outside of the image, but it would be a lot faster if I could just add or draw new shape-cuves to the mask directly without dragging them out first and later back in.

    Thanks in advance!

I currently see the blue highlight/border only on Master Pages. On document pages I only see the gray border.

I agree that the gray border could stand out better.

That 'gray' border is the current page you are working on. That could be a document page or a master page. The gray border could therefore be around both a document page and a master page, but not at the same time, because you can only have one page open a time to edit.

The same counts for selecting pages (the blue border). You can select document pages and master pages. But when you start selecting document pages, the master pages selection is gone and visa versa. That makes sense, because you cannot select both master pages and document pages at the same time because of obvious reasons.

I just tried again as you describe above. Indeed I misinterpreted your video thinking the other tab was there because you opened it via double click.

Now I have two tabs with two seperate documents. I can follow that changing (and saving) the embedded file does not update the parent file. Instead it brings up the resource manager popup and this opens the empty resource manager. I think this is some kind of bug.

    That's why I posted this on the 'bug'-forum ;)

What does work, though, is to switch back to the parent document, open resource manager and click on update. Does this work for you?

Thanks for helping me, I know that way it's working, but I posted this here, because of the situation that is not working as it should. So it's a bug and I reported it on this bug-forum ;)

After you double click to open the linked document in a new tab and after you made changes you have to close the tab. This updates the linked file.

The resource manager cannot show anything in the linked file itself (open in the tab) because the linked file does not have a linked resource. If you switch back to the tab with the parent file you will see in the resource manager that it has one entry.

    d.

Thanks for your response and try to help. I think we're having some miscommunication here.

    1) I didn't open the 'linked file' tab from within the parent, I just created a new affinity file inside the same UI, but I placed it inside the parent document with 'replace image' on a placeholder. So closing a tab wouldn't do anything, because there's no connection between the tabs here.

    2) I understand the resource manager cannot show anything when on the child. But I didn't go to that resource manager; instead Affinity popped-up a message, saying there is a change detected in the child image and a button to go to the resource manager. So that should be the resource manager of the parent I go to then. And there it should show the image, but it isn't in the list.

During the last days I've figured out an inconsistent behaviour of linked files within Designer.

At first placement it will be embedded automatically. I cannot choose between linking and embedding. But when I replace an image, than I can choose between linked and embedded, see attachement 2019-06-30_12-27-10.png.

Unfortunatelly there is no live update once a Designer file, containing a linked file, is open but a linked file will be changed. The only way to load a changed linked file is to close the Designer file an reopen it. This is better solved within Illustrator, there a message pops up and asks if I want to load the changed linked file.

Did I overseen something so that I can choose already in the first placement between both possibilities?

    2019-06-30_12-27-10.png

I can confirm this. I get the feeling when using 'place' the image is always embedded. No matter if you press 'replace image' and then load it with a different image and set it to 'linked' in the file dialog.

In Publisher there is a 'Resource Manager' which let us update our used resources. But that 'Resource Manager' doesn't seem to be available in Designer. I searched the helpfile on 'Resource Manager' in Designer, but it couldn't find anything, so I'm pretty sure it's unavailable in Designer. Which is odd to me if we can use linked resources. So how can we reload an image without restarting the software?

Guess you have a point for the bug-forum here. Or there's maybe something we don't know yet?

  7. I am working with quartets of master-pages belonging to each other (single page, start-page, middle-page and end-page), so I often have to duplicate masterpages to go to the end of the list to start a new quartet. But that seems to be impossible in Publisher now.

    1) When selecting and duplicating a master-page it always gets inserted directly after the original masterpage. I would expect the duplicate to go to the end of the list though. That makes more sense to me and works like that in all other software I used before AFAIK.
    2) AFAIK there's no way to order the master-pages list on alfabetical order, so renaming the master-pages doesn't influence the order, so there's no workaround in that to re-arrange
    3) AFAIK there's currently no way to re-order the master-pages (drag'n'drop, like for example in the layers list, isn't working here to manually re-arrange the list)
    4) It's currently not possible to duplicate three pages at the time

This feels pretty primitive and inflexible for a list. Which is understandable for the first version of the product. But, especially when using a lot of masterpages in one file (like some overrides and different types of letter- or book-layouts), we really need to be able to arrange our masterpages to keep things organized, easy to find and/or group masterpages together by at least their names. Now, once added a master-page, it always remains on the same position and we cannot change it later.

    How it is now:
I want to be able to duplicate the three different masterpages (one by one) in order to sweak it for a different set of layouts. Currently that's impossible because the duplicate is not pasted at the end, but inserted in between:

What I would like to see:
    * When duplicating a masterpage I would always (per default) like the copy to be placed at the end of the list
    * Being able to drag'n'drop a page to a different location to manually order the list
    * Being able to sort the list on alfabetical order would also be a very welcome addition, but first two wishes are highest in my personal priority
    * Being able to do a multiple-selection and multiple duplicate would be nice too

    - suggested color preview behavior, pure red + opacity,(100, 55, 0%).

Edit: noise is almost invisible in the color preview, but it could also appear there.

Sorry, although I understand where you're coming from, I have a different opinion like described above. When mixing colors I want to see the result of the COLOR output. Not the opacity, nor the noice. Because we are not mixing opacity and neither are we mixing noice. And it could also never show you a preview of a blending mode, because it the color is not always bound to a single object. Which could also have a high effect on the result.

Also your suggested color behaviour previews are not as supposed to be; when you have half-transparent/half-opacity red, it's not pink. Only in your preview it becoms pink, because of the white background that's affecting it. But the underlying layer could as well have a much different color, like green. And than you don't mix pink with green, but still red with green. Again; opacity has nothing to do with the color channels (at least it shouldn't!!).

If we would like to see transparency we should have a better opacity slider in the UI, as discussed in the other thread. If we would like to preview both opacity and noice than add a new preview view somewhere in the interface, but please don't change the colormix output preview to something else than what it's supposed to do: preview the mixed COLOR. Opacity has nothing at all to do with the color channels. At least it shouldn't.

  9. In Publisher it's almost inpossible to spot the currently active page. There is some gray border around the page-thumbnail/preview but it's almost impossible to spot. Especially when having a lot of (master-)pages.

Next to this there is also a very visible selection color (blue) showing which page is SELECTED, but that is not always the same page as we are currently editing.

Also, why add so much focus (even on the name label) on a selected page(s) and so little on showing the current page?
In my opinion it's much more important to be able to quickly see what page we are currently editing than to see which page happens to be selected.

This is how it looks now:
blue for a selection and that hard to spot gray for the current page we are editing. The current page, which is the most important thing to know, is almost impossible to spot:

    image.png.99418d7c4163475387901ed197445f05.png

This is how I would like to see it:
the main focus on the current page we are editing (here page 2) and keep the blue border for a selection, but don't highlight the page-name-label because that's too much focus to a selection making it difficult to spot the most important thing: which page we are currently at. So highlight the CURRENT page's label instead:

  10. For some masterpages the Spread Properties panel doesn't show the name of the masterpage. For some masterpages it does show it, for some masterpages it doesn't. It's always the same masterpages in the file having this problem. Not sure why.

Renaming a masterpage with this issue seems to work (by entering the new name in the empty field), because I sse the name under the page-preview/thumb change to the new name. But when opening the spread properties panel of this masterpage again, the namefield is empty again.

I don't think anything like that exists, but I wonder why you're deleting the Master Pages that you didn't need. I would just ignore them.

You don't need to create any dummy document pages ahead of time. When you want a document page that will use one of the Master Pages, just add the new page and tell Publisher which Master to use.

Yeah, now I understand the possibilities of master pages in Publisher better. They are obviously much more useful and versatile than in other software I used.

So with your help I found my way now and I'm going to use master pages in just one document to accomplish what I'm after! :)

  12. 20 minutes ago, walt.farrell said:

your approach is interesting, but I still don't understand the need to precreate dummy pages. Just put the relevant text frames on Masters B, C, etc. and create new real pages with the appropriate Master applied when you need one. And that resolves a lot of the other issues you've described, I think.

You are totally right. I see it now. I didn't know it was possible to override text inside the masterpage from within a page using that master page without affecting other pages using the same masterpage. Being able to do this is just briljant! Since I left Adobe (indesign in this case) I was used to Scribus and that software doesn't handle it that way. There you cannot edit (at least not AFAIK) the contents of the master page from within a page using that master page. Not even sure if Indesign could handle this situation the way Publisher handles it now, when I was using that software back then.

This is briljant. Thanks for helping and letting me get to this point! So actually what I'm after (Template Pages) are in fact already possible with master pages. That's great! :)

Again, I think it's working correctly and as intended. In that situation, Edit > Paste works and seems appropriate to me. In my opinion you have a feature request. Serif will agree, or not, of course :)

Although I agree with you it's a nice 'workaround' to be able to use Edit > Paste for this usecase and that it's a minor issue with less priority, I still call it a bug to not being able to use the rightclick menu on layers when there's no layer yet. Because what we want is to add layers and that's the place we might expect the menu to be. Because we're also using that same menu to copy layers.

Also 'paste' a layer should not need to be done from right clicking on a layer anyway and should also always be available from within the layers area in my opinion. Because we just want to paste that layer(s) in the root, not on a layer, in this case, so it makes sense to click on some space outside of a layer to get the contextmenu to paste the layers.

But again, thanks for helping me with the masters pages issue! It's great how Publisher handles this! It's very powerful. :)

  13. When having Master A containing a linked image and a Master B containing Master A, when updating the linked image in the document only Master A gets the updated image. Master B keeps the old image.

So all masters containing a master with a linked image don't get updated when we reload the changed linked image in the document.

    See video.

  14. 21 minutes ago, walt.farrell said:

Interesting idea, but I don't understand how that would (or does?) work. If you haven't actually used the Master Page as a Master Page, what would make the copied layers change when the linked file is changed? The Master Page itself might change, but the copied layers are no longer connected to it.

I want to have three types of letters:
    * A general letter
    * An offer letter
    * An invoice letter

They all use the same background and footer. Only the labels and content layout change on these layout types for letters.

At first I had it like this:

    * Master A = the background for all types of letters
    * Master B = the masterpage for a general letter which uses Master A as a background
    * Master C = the masterpage for an offer letter which also uses Master A as a background
    * Master D = the mastermage for an invoice letter which also uses Master A as a background.

So when changing Master A (the background for all letters), all letter-types are changing with it.

But that's only the masterpages. Not the (dummy-)content placed on it. So there's no layout yet for the actual values after the labels (like subject-label or address on the letter) and there's no body content on the letter.

So for this I need to pre-create pages:
    * Page 1 = A general letter (using Master B and additional text frames for the actual content)
    * Page 2 = An offer letter (using Master C and additional text frames for the actual content)
    * Page 3 = An invoice letter (using Master D and additional text frames for the actual content)

(Although in realitity it gets more complicated. Because of all three types I also need to have a starterpage, a middle-page and a last-page variant).

Now when I'd like to use this template file for a letter, I have to copy it first, than remove the pages I don't want, so I could not restore them, and only use the pages I need for a letter. And next to this I have a lot of master pages in one file.

So what I actually would like to see in Publisher is a way to set 'page templates'. So we could pick a page template from our list and start typing over the dummy text. But it doesn't seem to be possible to have some sort of Page Templates in Publisher.

So I solve this now by creating it this way instead:

    * One file with only the background of the letter (previously Master A) - so this doesn't use a master page, only a page (like a regular designer file) --> hense my action to copy all frames from the master page to a normal page
    * One file for the General Letter --> uses the background-file as a background in its masters and adds layout for a general letter (subject field and all that)
    * One file for the Offer Letter --> uses the background-file as a background in its masters and adds layout for an offer letter (pricing things and all that)
    * One file for the Invoice Letter --> uses the background-file as a background in its masters and adds layout for an invoice letter (different pricing things and all that)

That way it's way easier and more efficient to pick directly the right file for a letter and start typing. Without the need to remove all unused pages first and having a file with a lot of master pages we don't need anyway.

And also now it's much easier to re-use the exact same background for new letter-types. We just need to create a new file, using the same background-file as a linked resource.

    Hope this helps,

But now, please keep this thread about the issue please :)

I would prefer some sort of easy to see visual indication that the color is not 100% opaque but I don't think 'fade to white' is a good way to do that. Instead, maybe a checkerboard pattern overlay, one that appeared any time the opacity was less than 100%, would be a little better?

Yes, that could be done by changing the opacity slider to a better one as discussed previously on the thread below. If the opacity slider shows a color instead of black (which doesn't make sense anyway), it would do exactly what you're after. That way you could see it on the exact spot you need it: on the opacity slider. And we could still see the REAL result of colormixing of the COLOR CHANNELS in the color preview, as how it should be, because that's how it basically works and what we're after when we want to preview the COLOR.

Wouldn't it be simpler to create 10 or 11 or whatever slices in the Export Persona & export them to a folder? Since you probably want to send JPEG previews anyway, it seems to me this would save time.

This doesn't only save time, it's also a great way to change it later if the client wants a different crop. And you only need to have one layer in your file, so if you change the colors of the image, all crops immediately change their colors too and you only need to re-export them from the export persona (or even use the continues watcher!)

  17. I have an Affinity-file that's using another Affinity-file as a linked image inside an image placeholder. The document is set to 'prefer linked' so I told Affinity to don't embed images, but only link.

    image.png.e3b580e39e35742c0b1f8da28c52e8ac.png

When I update that linked Affinity file itself though, the parent Affinity file using the linked file, doesn't update. Not even when I reload the file. Not even when I reload the software.

There is a message telling me there's a change in a linked image, but when I click on the button to show the resource manager, there's nothing in it to update.

I can't find any way to update this linked image inside the parent document without reloading the image again in the placeholder. So it doesn't have the behaviour of a linked image, but acts like an embedded image. But I might miss something here?

[edit] in the video below both tabs are different documents/'processes'. So the 'linked-file'-tab is not opened by the 'parent-file', but is a different document that happens to be open in the same interface. So there's no connection between the tabs.

I'm curious why you want to copy layers from a Master Page to a document page, rather than simply Applying the Master? Are you trying to copy them without them being part of a Master Page layer?

In any case, you don't need the right-click menu. Just use Edit > Paste (Ctrl/Cmd+V), which works perfectly fine in my experience.

Great question. It's because I decided to use another structure than using a masterpage. I'd like to copy the existing layers from the masterpage to a regular page to use it as a linked file inside other documents (background) instead and want to keep that file clean, so no need to use materpages there. That way I have sort of a master-of-all-masters page.

When I than change this master-of-all-masters-page (the background-layout of a letter), all other afPub-files using this file as a linked image (so special types of letters all using the same background) should change too.

BTW this bug is not only related to copying from masterpage to page, but also from page to page. Or from a page to the same page even to put the just cut layers back with a paste.

  19. When I copy and paste layers from my master page to put them unto a page, that's impossible on a page without layers, because when there are no layers the context menu (rightclick menu) doesn't appear on rightclick. It only appears when right-clicking on a layer, but the whole point is that there are no layers and I want to paste them in.

So to paste layer, first we need to add some dummy layer first, just to get the contextmenu with 'Paste' in it. That's not really efficient.

The contextmenu should also appear when we rightclick on the layers-area and we have layers on the clipboard to paste.

    (see video).

It seems to assume a white or transparent page underneath the brush. And, personally, I think that's better than simply showing the color as a full-opacity value.

I understand what you write, but I respectfully have to dissagree here. There's no meaning at all in seeing a changed color value. That's also not at all what it does technically when mixing colors. Not to say it doesn't even know (and could know) which blend mode we're in. Which also has a lot of influence on the end result.

Changing the color by the opacity slider doesn't make any sense for a preview of the COLOR channels. We would like to see what COLOR we mixed. Not what the result MIGHT BE when put on top of a white background and ASSUME that we don't use some 'special' blend mode.
