You're correct, obviously. Or at least I agree with you. In my case I wasn't suggesting an index. I'm happier to have relevant modifiers listed though in that little tooltip. I'd say only "root"-level modifiers, not the myriad of functions available in something like node tool by various key presses. Just some hint to let the user know that if they hold those keys, it modifies the tool in some way. Because Node is largely about selecting things prior to manipulation, then I'd always focus on the selecting portion... because the "using" part of the tool can be researched or checked through help. So not a concrete list of complete functionality akin to the Status menu. Just a tooltip that subtlety hints to the user the tool itself asks you test certain modifiers to understand that this is key to using it more wisely. I hope that is clear. It might not to be, to be honest, bbrother. Because what is evident to one person may not be for another.. However, that's what I'd like see addressed: Applying more polish to the UX so that critical information is made known to make on-boarding a bit easier so a user immediately understands what the tool in their hand is capable of and relates to them more easily. Not necessarily how to use it if that makes sense. Subtlety is actually key to making this process as intuitive as possible. If one modifier key can really open up doors for say one or two tools, then the habit is then learned by the user that this is the standard way *all* tools are "augmented" in the program(s) so that they get a clue how to work with these tools more intuitively, and more importantly, waste less time.

To your credit, the way I learned about key object was only because Illustrator explicitly mentions it with a tooltip. Then I know its a functionality available to me and I search how to get a key selection in the help menu. In summary, there are ways to intuitively lead a user down the road in a program that really doesn't have to be explicit at all but guides them to learning to use the program(s) productively. It might even be possible to trim some of these actions down, actually, once a more intuitive approach is found that works consistently across most tools... but as @BBG3 widely states above:
    Here is one example...

This is the Align Panel in Illustrator. Note its layout is all icons short of one lonesome textfield (note the up/down key that shows this is an "adjustment" field... and can you tell what the Align To: does intuitively? Most probably can. Especially if they are accustomed to these tasks in other programs having a certain order/way of being done (in theory, not practice). See the box with the key icon? Can you guess what it says in its tooltip?

    Here is Affinity's version:

    Note:

    1) There's a dropdown for the "Align to" options (drop downs slow down the user)... in BOTH horizontal and vertical. AI just has one place for specifying distance, which is perfect, imo.
    2) There's 4 dropdowns total. Also, not only are they dropdowns, but two require auto to be unchecked (often disabled depending on what you are doing) to even access them...

Another detail worth noting: In Illustrator, there is no "Status" menu for showing tool options. Most everything is quickly indicated by a cursor change when certain modifier keys are held or "on hover". If Affinity is lagging or its interface is actually being unresponsive or glitching out, we sometimes can't tell for how long or what is even happening, because I've become accustomed to Affinity's UI/UX remaining unresponsive by design. I've gotten so used to this to some extent that I often feel I can't track what is expected or unexpected behavior. Sometimes no response is expected behavior, which is not very helpful. There's many instances where no cursor change is witnessed.

So the argument for UX is not to make it something dummy-proof (never possible... life finds a way), but rather, to save time and learn to work more efficiently and confidently.

We're hoping to get in an auto crop to opaque before 2.1 release (as suggested earlier in thread) -particularly for when you rotate / straighten to quick crop to max opaque area / remove all transparent areas. Will that effectively achieve what you want or is it something else?

I would love if this also applied to straightening photos within the crop tool. I would like an option for the crop tool to automatically adjust to the picture while straightening it - just like in Apple Photos. Right now it is extremely difficult to exactly match the borders of a straightened picture with the crop tool.

Yes, that's a bug - the hit area for corner drag seems to have been decreased unintentionally with this change. We'll sort it.

Thanks for the drag anywhere function. I would like the area of the “corner drag” to be made a little bigger though. With the new function it’s rather hard to get the cursor to switch to the corner resize tool as you still have to precisely click on the corner. That’s different from dragging the sides where you can now drag anywhere. I often find myself dragging just one side when I wanted to drag the corner. Is that understandable?

PLEASE enable a PERMANENT way to reset an object’s bounding box without workarounds!

I posted about this in 2015 and it’s still an unresolved issue, with users asking about this in the OP. Is there anyway to make this permanent, ie, baked into the object? it’s really a hindrance to constantly work around BASIC functionality… PLEASE!

I still don't understand why the regular Crop tool in the main persona doesn't have the Crop To Bounds and Crop To Opaque options while the Panorama persona does:

Might be cheeky to add this here but I would like magnifying lenses to be added to the ends of the straighten tool.  Handy for precision work on straightening a wide horizon without lots of zooming about.

Please consider non-English keyboards where [] keys (and others) are only available with alt-modifier (and those characters are unlabeled on physical keys).
I think Germany could be 2nd largest market for Affinity Apps, and getting usable default keyboard shortcuts for essential functions would be a great add-on for your loyal user base.

    Hi,
the first "simple mode" screen to acquire an image from a scanner doesn't seem to be adapted to the dark mode. One cannot see the text on the buttons:

Upon clicking on the button that should say "more details" (the second button from the right), the following screen is correctly displayed:

The same problem exists when trying to acquire an image from within Affinity Publishers's Photo persona.

I downloaded the assets for Photo on the iPad and noticed thar some of the available assets were the same in Designer but still showed as needing to be downloaded, which I assume is also the case for the desktop versions as well. Is there a way to have a central pool as the size can soon mount up.

Please, please fix this.  I don’t consider this a bug, but  something that it seems is a deliberate change.
Long press with the ‘Move’ tool enabled is not only inconvenient, but it has created an ability when pressing with a finger can accidentally move the active layer, as  has happened, to me anyway.
This needs to be considered.  Please put the ability to make the ‘long press’ as it was before.  One should not have to waste time to enable the move tool and/or realign a layer because it was accidentally moved in the process.

    Hello,
    are you going to fix
    1) When in affinity photo and you go to import from apple Photo, it only shows you albums. But it completely ignores the fact that I’ve organised all my albums into folders to make it organised, and doesn’t drive me insane to navigate and find my photos. Please make Affinity Photo for iPad RESPECT and use these folders.
    2) When viewing photos in Apple Photo, there is no option to Share To affinity Photo. Basically there is absolutely no decent DAM on iPad what so ever. Zero, none. And so the closest thing I have is to use Apple Photo. From there you should be able to just share the raw file from Apple Photo straight into Affinity Photo, which you then save on to your drive/cloud.

These are two very basic needs and should be there from day one. What would be a real winner, is to develop a half-decent DAM (independent of Affinity Photo) which also supports viewing folders(and subfolders) of photos even on external hard drives. Think “FastRawViewer” but for iPad.

One aspect I hope gets resolved in 1.9 is the fact that the Colour Picker Tool does not share its settings with all the other colour pickers in Affinity. What I mean by that is that the Colour Picker Tool is able to change its settings to Current Layer among other things, but every single tool that has a colour picker can't use those same settings. See this link for reference about addressing the various shortcomings of the Colour Picker Tool and colour picking in general:
This combined with the previously mentioned problem that there are no sticky settings for several tools, which forces you to change it to Current Layer for the Colour Picker Tool on start-up every time by pressing I on the keyboard to properly select the colour you want. When you have nearly a hundred layers on top of the layer you want to colour pick from, this becomes a lot of tedious extra work to set things up properly.
Speaking of sticky settings, one aspect that I hope the new Studio Presets will eventually address is saving your sticky settings along with the rest of the workspace. So if you happen to have a tool setting you normally like for a specific workspace, you can save that with your preset. If you combine this with being able to export/import your Studio Presets so you have an easier time setting up Affinity for work wherever you go, Affinity as a whole would become a lot smoother for workflow.

captain13chris reacted to MickRose in Why can't a PDF just be placed without option to edit?
Editing PDFs and placing/importing PDFs are two completely different things. If a customer provides a PDF which needs to be included as part of a new design then the ability to place and crop a page from a PDF file is pretty important. But this must be done as a pass through and NOT as a converted graphic. It needs to be 100% reliable and I hope Serif take this onboard.
Having said that, the ability to convert a relatively simple PDF into a page layout program can be really useful at times. People sometimes bring me MS Publisher files to be tweaked and I'd much rather make a PDF and then edit it in AD or APub than use MS Publisher for that. Its horses for courses.
