Dan C reacted to stokerg in Linked file LAYERS dropbox is missing from Context Toolbar
Hi @aleale1,
I'll be editing my other reply shortly.
I've been looking into this with the help of @Dan C. We've both found this won't work with a Linked PSD file. You'd need to have your Image Placement Policy set to Embedded then place the PSD, which would allow you to double-click on the placed PSD file to edit it. You'd then be able to create the Layer Container using Layer>New Layer and then drag everything to that container. If you then go back to the main document, you'll now have the Layer option on the context toolbar. Photoshop doesn't use Layer Containers, which just complicates things a bit more, as theres no way to create one.
Sorry for the confusion and I'll be looking to get the website updated

Dan C reacted to pwhole in Affinity Designer & Photo will not launch on Win11
Sorry for the delay in responding - I had to go away for a few days. But that's fine, thanks for letting me know - my new machine is pretty fast anyway, so I doubt it will be a serious issue.

Here is a new preview where I added the mist around the central characters, and moved them and the foreground down for better Text placement, plus got a temp title up trying to get the ST style down
Hope you all like it

Dan C got a reaction from Graphite Addict in RESET THE ORIENTATION OF A ROTATED IMAGE
There is currently an improvement request logged with our developers specifically for this and our team are looking into adding this as a dedicated option. I've 'linked' this thread to the request, so that our team can see how many users are requesting this.
I've also explained that previous to 2.2 there was a known workaround with Add, but since this has been lost due to unrelated Boolean fixes, the dedicated option is more wanted than ever

Dan C got a reaction from AiDon in Afiinity Photo — layer thumbnails render after long delay, not at all or only after additional action in the app.
Hi @bbrother,
Thanks for your report!
As I understand it, the speed at which your layer thumbnails update will be system dependant and may vary based on your GPU/CPU rendering speed & available RAM (memory).
I've tested the workflow shown in your recording on my Windows 10 PC here, with Hardware Acceleration disabled in Affinity and these layer thumbnails are updated within 1-2 seconds for each action:
2024-01-15 12-38-41.mp4
The PC I'm using is as follows:
Intel i9-11900K 32GB DDR4 @ 2933MHz Nvidia RTX 3060Ti Can you please confirm your PC specs for me?
When this occurs on your machine, try zooming on the canvas - does this force the Layer thumbnails to refresh for you please?
Many thanks in advance!

Apologies, I agree the helpfile could do with some clarification here - similar to the below edit perhaps?
I'll be sure to log this with the documentation team for further consideration

Dan C got a reaction from Irupe in Artboard ready-made sizes
Hi @Designer1,
I can confirm this is not a bug within the Affinity apps, as the Presets are designed around the 'Devices' section of the New Document dialog -
From the Help File on 'Adding and removing Artboards':
Therefore, I'll move this thread to the Feedback section of our forums, for our devs to see and consider changing these options - or allowing further user choice when creating preset Artboard sizes.
I hope this clears things up!

Dan C reacted to mypointofview in Affinity Publisher picture frame perspective transformation
@Dan C
thanks a lot for your elaborate answer!
It actually makes sense even though it's quite overwhelming.
I will still do most of the work in each specific app to get the benefit of all tools. Nonetheless it's extremely practical when it comes to a case like my specific questions.
thanks 😀

Dan C got a reaction from mypointofview in Affinity Publisher picture frame perspective transformation
No problem at all!
Essentially, there are 3 different ways in which the Affinity apps allow for direct 'interworking' between each app.
1. File > Edit In [Photo/Designer/Publisher] ...
Within any Affinity desktop app, you will find menu items under the File menu that allows you to 'send' documents between the apps seamlessly.
This will take your currently active document and open it within the selected Affinity app, to continue editing the file.*
For example;
You can open and develop a RAW file within Affinity Photo, then once you've finished developing/editing the image you could use File > Edit In Designer...
This would close the edited image from Affinity Photo and open it within Affinity Designer, allowing you to then use the Designer specific tools, such as the Vector Brush Tool on your image.
*Note that Edit In requires the same version of the Affinity apps to be installed on the same device to function.
For example; If you have Affinity Publisher V1 and Affinity Designer V2 installed on one PC, Edit In will not be selectable in either app - you would need to install multiple V1 or V2 apps for this to function.
2. Interchangeable File Format
Each Affinity app saves your document using a specific file format - Affinity Photo uses .afphoto, Affinity Designer uses .afdesign and Affinity Publisher uses .afpub.
However, these file formats are only named differently for file identification purposes and are essentially the same format, meaning any Affinity app can open any Affinity file, on any platform that Affinity supports.*
For example;
You can create a logo in Affinity Designer for Windows and save this as an .afdesign file. You can then send this file to a mac and use File > Open in Affinity Photo on macOS to open this .afdesign and continue editing from where you left off in Designer, but now with the tools found in Affinity Photo.
Following this, you can save the document from Affinity Photo on macOS (which will retain the previous .afdesign format) and then send this to your iPad, where the file could be opened within Affinity Publisher for iPad to finish editing.
This would carry across all of the edits made in the file from both Designer & Photo, and would then be editable in Publisher, using Publishers specific toolset.
The above example is purely hypothetical - as the Affinity document (.afphoto, .afdesign or .afpub) from any app can be opened in any other Affinity app, on any supported platform.
*Note that Affinity V1 files can be edited across all Affinity V1 apps, however once saved within Affinity V2 they will only be editable within Affinity V2 and can no longer be reopened within Affinity V1.(ie not 'backwards compatible')
3. StudioLink within Affinity Publisher
Affinity Publisher is currently the only Affinity app to support StudioLink.
Although Affinity Designer and Photo have their own Personas, you cannot access Affinity Designers tools from within Affinity Photo directly,(ie without leaving Affinity Photo) or vice-versa.
Essentially StudioLink allows you to create a document within Publisher, then switch to either the Photo or Designer persona within Publisher*.
This provides you with a more refined set of tools from each app (Photo/Designer) respectively, without having to leave the Affinity app you originally created the document in, which the above 2 workflows require.
However as StudioLink Personas each have this more refined toolset, certain functions of Designer/Photo can only be found within that app directly - such as Panorama Stitching or Astrophotography Stacking in Affinity Photo, which cannot be found in the Photo Persona within Publisher StudioLink.
For example;
After creating your Publisher document and using File > Place to introduce an image to your document, you might decide this image requires a few edits to be perfect. You can then switch to the Photo Persona using StudioLink to instantly edit this image in your file, using the tools from Affinity Photo, without having to leave Publisher & saving/closing your file.
You may then decide that your document requires a Logo, or perhaps a Warp Group as covered above. Therefore you can switch to the Designer Persona using StudioLink to access these tools, again without having to leave Publisher.
Finally, you can return to the Publisher Persona to complete the editing on your file and Export/Print/Save this as required.
StudioLink has been previously explained/demonstrated during the AffinityLive event when this feature was first announced by Ash, our MD. You can find this video in the below Spotlight article -
https://affinityspotlight.com/article/focus-on-studiolink/
*Note that StudioLink requires the same version of the Affinity apps to be installed on the same device to function.
For example; If you have Affinity Photo V1 and Affinity Publisher V2 installed on one PC, StudioLink will not function in Publisher V2 - you would need to install Photo V2 for this to function.
Equally, if you have Affinity Designer V2 installed on macOS and Affinity Publisher V2 installed on iPadOS, StudioLink would not function on iPad - you would need to install Designer V2 on iPadOS for this to function.
This is why we now sell Affinity as a 'Universal License', providing you with Photo, Designer and Publisher V2 Affinity apps, on all 3 platforms simultaneously - meaning StudioLink can work on any supported device!
__________________
I appreciate this may be more information than you require, but I felt it best to be thorough - though there may still be edge cases not covered by the above.
Hopefully this helps clear things up for you, but we're certainly glad to hear StudioLink should help with your general workflows in Affinity

Dan C got a reaction from bures in How to use export setup preset with another file
Thanks for providing that for me!
You are exporting the slice using a 'p' variable for the slice size and setting the width 'w' variable to this slice name - the 'p' value you've used is not a Width 'w' value, and therefore isn't used for the slice name.
If you want to use the 'Width' variable in the slice name, your export slice size needs to use the 'w' variable specifically, for example '100w'.
The app does not convert between the p export scale and the actual width of the exported file generated when using the width 'w' variable and this is expected behaviour.

Dan C reacted to MmmMaarten in [AD 2.3.1] Weird artboard behaviour
Thanks @Dan C and for adding a video to it even. I get what you mean and show.
Honestly I wouldn't even know why I would ever want to mask the artboard, so it was an accident that I got in that state in the first place (and I only saw later that it was actually masked).
Thanks again for the clear explanation. Makes complete sense now.

Dan C got a reaction from bures in How to use export setup preset with another file
Thanks for your feedback!
As I understand it, we don't currently support the 'p' value as a variable, apologies. I'm not aware of any option to directly use the p value set for the slice in the slice name, so your workaround shown may be the bets option currently.
Your recording doesn't show you copy/pasting any variables, so I can't really comment on this. As above please ensure you have selected the specific slice export settings before using the Copy option if you want these to carry.
-
Dan C got a reaction from bures in How to use export setup preset with another file
Variables are created for each specific slice export size, they are not shared with other exported slices by default - if you want to share variables across multiple formats/sizes, you'll need to use the copy & paste functions in the Slices Studio.
I'd recommend creating a feedback post with your suggestions, if you wish to see this behaviour change

Dan C got a reaction from MmmMaarten in [AD 2.3.1] Weird artboard behaviour
Thanks for your report & file provided @MmmMaarten!
I can confirm that this is not controlled or determined by the child layers of the Artboard - but it is being controlled by the Vector Mask applied to the Artboard in your document.
The behaviour you're seeing is expected, and the same can be seen with both Artboards and simple vector layers alike.
With a Vector Mask enabled, the Bounding Box and control handles shown will be limited to the Vector Mask area, regardless of the parent objects original size.
Toggling the Vector Mask visibility will 'hide' the mask and return the parent object to it's original full size, with a bounding box etc to match.
You can see this occurring in the below recording -
2024-01-16 12-12-52.mp4
I hope this clears things up

Dan C got a reaction from mypointofview in Affinity Publisher picture frame perspective transformation
Alternatively, if you have Affinity Designer V2 installed you can use the Designer Persona in Affinity Publisher V2 to add a Vector Warp Group to your design as required -
However unfortunately Publisher doesn't natively support these features as a standalone app currently, apologies.

Many (not all) APhoto features + tools are accessible in APub via APub's Photo Persona.
… and, once created, you can edited their layers in APub's APub Persona:

Dan C got a reaction from Joe S. in What function allows a tap & hold to select & use a color - and can it be disabled?
Hi @Joe S.,
Whilst using the Paint Brush tools in Affinity for iPad, a long press and drag on the canvas will activate the Colour Picker tool to allow you to sample a colour from the document and immediately apply this to the brush.
Unfortunately there's no option to disable this behaviour at this time - however I agree that it certainly could be better covered in the helpfile, as only the ALT modifier is mentioned and not the press and hold action.
I'll get this logged with our documentation team now, to be improved in the future.
I hope this clears things up!

Well Rasterization worked fine. I've always opened images in plugins the same way for years now, I guess the images must have always been rasterized before now.
Thanks everyone!

Your advice solved the problem, GPU Tweak was the cause.

Dan C reacted to PhoDesPub in everyday objects library
Many thanks for this tip. Finally, an integrated solution. This is how I imagined it. As in the past with two very well-known programmes, which also had countless such images available in a directory.
Even if it's not the fine art of drawing. But it helps a lot to explain facts with a simple image composition and in a short time.
Super Affinity.

Dan C reacted to Jon W in Scripting
Hi @kimtorch.
We are doing our best to engage with our users and understand their requirements.
Our primary focus is to expose existing application features to scripts/plugins; text support is just one part of this. We are software developers, not publishers, and although we often liaise with the Publisher team regarding text matters, they are not really scripting experts. So you might have to explain some things that may seem obvious to you.
We are aware of InDesign text tags: as I understand it, they are primarily used to map to text styles on import.
What we're trying to understand, and I hope you can explain, is how this relates to scripting. I would guess that perhaps you envisage a script which would run as a tagged text import filter, overriding the tag -> style mapping which would normally be set up manually in the app?

Dan C got a reaction from NotMyFault in You cannot create group for symbol layer
As I understand it - this is expected behaviour with Symbols.
Creating a selection of multiple individual objects and then creating a Symbol from this selection will create a separate Symbol for each object selected.
Creating a selection of multiple individual objects, Grouping these together and then creating a Symbol from selection will create a Symbol of the Group itself, including any child layers within.
This is briefly covered in the relevant helpfile page here:
Therefore I believe this is how the developers have designed Symbols to work with multiple object selections and singular child layers

Dan C got a reaction from simproductions in Salt and Pepper LUT pack not auto loading in LUT menu
Welcome to the Affinity Forums @simproductions!
As Walt mentions above, these are found in the Adjustment Studio, under the LUT section. You can expand the LUT section and then select the installed category to see a list of these LUTs -
If you can't see the Adjustment Studio currently, ensure this is enabled under Window > Adjustment.
I hope this helps
