Dan C got a reaction from Victor C in Does affinity photo has HSL color correction like in LR ?
    Hi pudobof,
    Welcome to the forums
Unfortunately you're correct in saying this feature is not implemented in Affinity, however it is a rather nice tool in Lightroom. I'll have this thread moved to feature requests for our devs to consider!

Dan C reacted to James Ritson in colours in Affinity Photo washed out
Hi dho, you shouldn't be setting Affinity Photo's colour profile to your new display profile, that's not how you colour manage. The software will automatically colour manage based off the current monitor profile, which should be set to your custom profile created by the Spyder5Pro software (is it i1Profiler?).
The colour profile options in Affinity Photo's Preferences are for the document profile, not your display. Your document profile wants to be a standardised profile like sRGB (the default), Adobe RGB, ProPhoto etc. Photo will then colour manage by converting the colour values using your display profile so that what you're seeing is accurate.
What you're currently doing is converting from the image's original colour profile to your display profile, which may explain why the colours look washed out and incorrect. Try setting Affinity Photo's colour dropdown options back to their defaults (e.g. sRGB) and you should see an improvement.
In other words, you're overcomplicating things! All you need to do is make sure the OS (Windows or macOS) is using your display profile. In Windows, you'd right click the desktop and choose Display Settings, then make sure the Spyder profile is being used in the dropdown. On macOS, you'd go to System Preferences>Displays>Colour and set the display profile there. You shouldn't need to change anything in Affinity Photo, just leave the colour profile options on their default settings (e.g. sRGB).
    Hope that helps!

Dan C got a reaction from MEB in How to set default Affinity file to share?
Thanks for confirming that! This is down to Permission Inheritance for the sub folder, from the parent folder. All folders are set to automatically inherit from their parent folders, but folders are set by default to not pass down inheritance information.
You can change this setting in your parent folder:
Right-click the new folder, and then click Properties .Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced. Click to clear the Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object and all child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box. Further info can be found here

    EDIT:
Could you double check this setting for me still please?

Apologies, it appears the folder options have changed slightly, there is a checkbox beneath the 'Disable Inheritance', which passes the parent settings through to the child folders. Setting this option may help the file transfer.

Also don't overlook what @Mark Ingram wrote in the same discussion about the Affinity apps not loading all of a file's data into memory at once. That makes it possible to work on very large files without eating up all of your computer's RAM or relying on performance-killing VM or dedicated swap disks. It is one of the several reasons Affinity can be so responsive to user input but does complicate network file management considerably.

I know the quality of the photo isn’t too good, and the style is quite “cheesy” but..

The car was bought new by Lt. J.J. Jarratt.  That is his dog Mike.  Of course, everybody knows that the Jaguar XK-140 is the perfect car for the standard issue hotshot USAF F-86 fighter pilot to tour the US Southwest in with his lovely wife at his side and his German Shepherd and Siamese cat in the back seats.  The location is George AFB, California.  Roughly 1955-1956 timeframe.   Original Kodachrome slide taken with Kodak Retina IIa.  Digitized in June 2018 via Sony a7 with Qualide Slide Zoom Duplicator attached via T2-Nex adapter .    I got rid of all of the dust/lint/debris that I could find with the Inpainting Brush - likely a couple hundred strokes.  Then I used Selective Color to help the 60 something year old colors - a lot for the greens, a little for the blues, and a little for the neutrals.  Then a slight crop off the left side to remove the irregular border on the original slide.

Why not ask her how she does this in Photoshop to get a better understanding of what she means by 'Lighten'
Printing is not all about the printer, the paper you use to print onto can come into play, the inks used are also a big factor and even the batches can vary. I'd make a test strip print with various 'lightening' settings.
In Levels, moving the White slider to the left will make the image brighter, not necessarily lighter. You could use the HSL adjustment  filter to make the image lighter by moving the Luminosity slider to the right until you feel it looks lighter.
Another angle is does your monitor need calibrating?

Dan C reacted to toltec in Editing a mask?
You can just paint on the mask layer. Make sure just the mask layer is selected by clicking on the mask layer thumbnail (see below), choose a Paint Brush and either black paint (to add to the mask and erase the image) or white paint (to remove the mask and reveal the image) and paint on the mask layer. As you do, you can see the effect on the image.
You can also paint in grey for a semi transparent mask.

If you  right click on the mask, there are also some Edit options

Edit Mask displays the mask as black and white.
Refine Mask loads in into the Refine Selection panel.
Release Mask just moves it outside the image layer. So it is no longer nested.
P.S. If you are using Affinity Designer, you will need to be in Pixel Persona to paint on it.

Dan C reacted to MEB in Affinity Photo changes my image from 300dpi to 72dpi
    Hi Jaffa,
On the Export dialog click the More button and uncheck Embed metadata. It should then keep the dpi you set in the document. This is probably due to a bug/conflict between the original dpi of the image (metadata) and the dpi you set in the document.

Yes, the microfilm processor's squeegee between the developer and fixer seems to be dirty.
I redone it by converting to 8bit colour and using the noise filter before the high-pass filter.

    Hi jegog,
    Welcome to the forums!

There are a few ways you can do this, I've attached a file below to show the effects I used to try and best bring out the text in your image.
I used a selective colour adjustment, changing to 'Whites' in the dropdown list then adjusting the colour and opacity until I was happy with the yellowish tint.
I then used a combination of a High Pass Filter with the blend mode set to overlay, as well as a brightness & contrast, shadows/highlights and levels adjustment to bring out the text. Hope this helps

Yes, they are way more limited than a desktop publishing app as i said "albeit in a more limited way", but Designer is not intended to be used/deal with large blocks of text either. It also doesn't offer hyphenation which is mandatory for justified text. It's just a small overlap like the pixel/image editing tools in Designer or the vector based tools in Photo. Affinity Publisher will offer much more control to compose text.

Perhaps it would be less confusing if, in addition to the other fixes, the tooltip name was changed to Preferred Letter Spacing?

Dan C reacted to MEB in Is this workflow possible in Photo?
    Hi DevBoyLars,
You can only do this using Separated Mode (menu Window ▸ Separated Mode), creating a new view (menu View ▸ New View) and setting it to 100%.
There's no way to control the zoom level displayed in the Navigator panel. It's simply adjusted to the size of the panel so it's impossible to get an accurate view (1:1) here.

Dan C got a reaction from Alfred in LETTER SPACING IN DESIGNER
Thanks for that, it's a Mac system standard font, but it appears that the issue persists across other fonts, as I've been able to replicate it.
We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, I'll get it logged with our devs.
For the meantime there is a work around. If you set Maximum Letter Spacing (box to the right of Letter Spacing) to 250%, you can now move Desired Letter Spacing to whatever percentage you wish, hope this helps

The View menu > Show Context Toolbar item controls whether or not that toolbar is visible. It is possible to assign it a custom keyboard shortcut:

You might check to see if that is what caused the toolbar to disappear.

    Hi chris.bannu,

We are planning on adding this shortly, as one of our developers MattP outlines in this post as well as our head of development TonyB confirming this here.
I'm sorry but I can't provide a more accurate timescale, as we don't like to make promises we might not be able to keep to!

    Hi Reveller,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Go to menu Help ▸ Welcome... and click the link provided there in one of the horizontal scrolling pages (i'm not sure if it's available on the Windows version but it is on Mac). You may have to create an account on the Affinity Store if you haven't purchased anything from there previously but you will be able to access that and other goodies anytime later when you need to.
