Massi reacted to JayH in Default Save As to Any Format
    Hi,
When you choose to "Save As" for a new document, Affinity Photo defaults to ".afphoto", its native file format. If I wish to "Save As" to a different format, I have to "Export" instead. There may be numerous reasons why this is the default way Affinity Photo works, but it is really annoying. Why can't we choose which method to "Save As" when we, select "Save As", without having to resort to exporting instead? Users complained about this in Gimp for many years.
As an artist I save the largest majority of my images, like many do I expect as .jpg, or .png. perhaps even .PSD to be compatible with other people. Occasionally I will use .aphoto, but I have to consider future archival options too. Other software doesn't open .afphoto files either, at least, not yet.
Instinctively you head over to "Save As", intending to save your work, then think, "Damn!" and then have to cancel, then select the "Export" option from the menu instead.
You might say that I'll get used to it eventually, but I've been using Affinity Photo since it came out and I still fall into the trap.
I know that Affinity Photo's native file format is best for Affinity Photo, so it includes all your Adjustments etc, but can't we have the choice? Just a drop down menu like other software like Photoshop where Affinity chooses by default it's propitiatory format, but allows you to select an alternative if necessary?
The "Export" option is so unnecessary, not just for me, but everyone I've talked to who uses Affinity Photo.
Can we have the option please? Even if it's a option to tick in the Preferences?
    Thanks, Jay.

Adding my request for seeing the brush edge (and preferably feather range) while using in all tools (brush, clone stamp, eraser, etc). Absolutely needed to do fine work.

Massi reacted to HuniSenpai in When using a brush with low hardness, the soft edge extends way beyond the brush preview
Here's a video exemplifying what i'm experiencing, and it's super frustrating when I need to do a shadow by hand, for example:
I'm okay if it extends slightly beyond the brush circle, but this is way too much. I have to hold my brush a couple hundred pixels away from the edge just so it'll land where I want it to.

This doesn't happen if I use a 100% hardness. In fact, the preview circle changes size as I change hardness! The only time where the preview circle size is correct is when the hardness is 100%.

Moreover, the actual size of the circle changes significantly when changing hardness, which I guess is why you're trying to compensate by changing the preview circle (but the preview circle is actually still not quite right). Both of these are at 1817 px size brush, but the one on the left has 0% hardness, and the one on the right has 100%. Look at the size difference (the guides represent the extreme outermost bounds of the layers -- I used Affinity Photo's transform controls to get the actual size, instead of eyeballing it):

I'm guessing this is because i'm just using 8 bits per channel, and, as such, the the steps cut off early?
In short, I want the preview to show the absolute outermost bounds of the brushstroke, not just where its most intense or something strange like that. Is the preview drawing the circle where the brush is 50% alpha or something?  I'm not sure.

Maybe a way to solve this would be to have the option to hold down say three fingers one the screen, which would mean that when you touch the surface with the pencil it would only show a preview (as hoover is not something support on the iPad).

So anywhere press down for example three fingers and while you hold them the pencil will just show a preview brush size where it touches. Then release to paint work as normal.

Another one would be to have a preview button on some corner toolbar that would allow to be pressed to enable this in the same way as the three finger gesture (being able to configure this would be the best!)

I completely agree. Working at different zoom levels and on differently sized images, it's really hard to figure out how big my brush is going to be. This is particularly useful since I'm using Apple Pencil, and I can really clearly see the point I'm touching.

There definitely needs to be an option to show the brush cursor. Right now it's like a guessing game for doing detailed brush work, like masking fine areas with hair...etc. I guess I'll still be using PS CS6 for the majority of my work for now.  GREAT APP SO FAR!!!!

Yup, this is a major problem, we totally need an update where we can see a live view of the brush circle when brushing, inpainting and all of that. Honestly, I love that I can finally do proper retouching and editing on the go but the brush cursor not being visible during painting is the only issue I see so far. It's a bit frustrating not being able to properly see to control the boundaries that you want to paint, heal, dodge, burn etc within, if you know what I mean. Please, please fix this. Warm regards and thanks for a fantastic app!!

I am new to Affinity Photo and am currently using the trial. I hopped on here to see how to set the crop default to Original Ratio because I have to select it EVERY time. I am shocked that there is no feature for this. I hope it will be added soon because this is at the top of my list of editing tools to select, but this shortcoming is a black eye.

    Hi arial_bold,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Currently there's no way to make it the default option. I'm moving this thread to the Feature Requests section.

Hello. I have the latest APhoto. How can I get the 'original ratio' option selected by default? I am cropping a lot of images and it is a pain to manually select that option every single time. Also when you leave the crop tool, then go back to it, it goes back to the default again.

I understand your frustration cause I'm probably used to the same workflow as yours, I found really obvious that a auto-clean feature to check was necessary. i.e. When you skin retouching you make tons of quick and precise strokes (mainly in low frequency for me) in order to even the skin tones; so having to click Clean every time is just nuts.
It's actually a part of a regular gesture in a retoucher/photographer workflow, I feel like something important is really missing and would be good to have it, it would make a big difference.

Parallel processing should make the batch job run faster but it's caused hanging in the past so always try it with it switched off if the batch job does not run initially
