The current version is 1.6. Version 1.7 is on the way, but (like all 1.x point releases) it will be available for free to all version 1 owners, so there’s no reason for you to hold back on that account. Version 2 is clearly quite a long way off, and even when it does eventually arrive you can continue to use version 1 if you wish to do so.

The trial is the same as the current retail version. All updates are free until version 2.0 which will still take quite some time until it's ready for release.

To late if you're working with existing images, but you can take multiple images and select the bits that don't have people in them. Have a look at this video.
