Which arguably may (or may not) be better than letting updates be applied without intervention. I have auto-update turned off for all store apps, but ideally I'd like to let the trivial bundled accessories (notepad, etc.) auto-update, but not anything more major. This "installation" procedure could probably be scripted easily enough.

Absolutely. The update procedure of V1 was not that much better as you had to download every programm separatly, install it with admin privileges and wait till done. Extracing the zip file took about the same time (even less time).

  2. There are benefits for Windows Apps.

Apps are installed in userspace so an installation can be performed even when not having local admin rights. This was always a disturbing task when I had to distribute new versions on the pc's of my team members as I'm the only one with local admin rights in my team. These problems will be gone with the msix version. And additionally there is the option for distributed and automatic updates for apps.

The msix install files are digitally signed, so you can be sure that they come from serif and aren't manipulated by anyone. That's a major security advantage.

But I also see the problem of people loosing some freedom with not being able to choose the install path and not finding the app location in the places they used to find programs for the last 25 years. And of course sideloading modern apps is sometimes blocked by corporate IT that isn't up to date with their policy adjustment.

It would be great, if Serif could just release both - the msix and the regular setup - so everyone would be happy.

  3. Two things that really came handy when working with many objects, groups and layers:

    - If you Ctrl-click an object, you select it regardless of any groups, subgroups and layers (except if the layer containing the object or group is locked)

    - A thing I learned a few weeks ago and used so often since: You can right-click an object and select "Show in layers panel". That way you dive directly to the desired object, especially useful in combination with Ctrl-clicking the object in question.

We are aware of some ram issue.

    Perfect. That was my intention.

As a side note, your in-app ram limit is set to 2gb. Our minimum requirements for  is 4GB.

Two side notes from my side:

    - On this PC I have 16GB of ram, but setting it to 2GB resolves most of the problem when working with many small files. When I work with big projects, I set it to 12GB and everything works fine.

    - If 4GB is the minimum requirement, why can I select values below that?

  5. Hi,
I work on a project where I need to change small things on a couple files each time. The files are rather small (about 2mb) with two pages, a few pictures and a bit of text. During editing the files one by one, my PC was getting slower and slower. I checked the task manager and noticed, that Affinity Publisher took almost all RAM it could (even more than set in the performance settings). I observed this problem further and it seems to be connected to linked ressources (images).

It is very simple to recreate the effect:

    1. Create new document
    2. Insert a few (big) pictures as linked ressources - two or three is enough
    3. Save and close document
    4. Re-open document and close right away
    5. Repeat step 4 until your memory is exhausted :)

Sometimes, when closing the document, the garbage collector seems to step in, but only randomly and not connected to the max RAM usage.

    Similar problems:

  6. I always love when I see there is a new update. When I started with Designer, it was just one and it updated quickly and effortless. Now I'm using all three products and to keep the links between the apps working, they have to be the same version. So with every update, I have to download all three setup files and execute them one after the other.

Is there an update tool to download and update all three apps in one go? Or has someone created a little update script that would do the job?

  7. When content is created by others, licenses need to be respected. But there is no difference between sharing brushes that need to be imported and the whole brush library. If a license is broken, it is broken either way.

Coming back to the original topic: sharing of assets. The assets I use, are logos and design elements created in respect to our corporate design. There are no license problems whatsoever regarding these and it would be a great benefit for small design teams, if such assets could be shared. Creating junctions is a nice idea for a workaround - I will give this a try.

I think Adobe CC Libraries does a pretty good job of this and for me its a killer feature!

While I see the benefits of a Affinity-own cloud system, I currently don't see the possibility for them to develop the whole server-side structure as well as a sync client for multiple platforms. I would also say, that in a world with endless options for cloud services and every company relying on their own preset, creating another one would not create much benefit. Therefore I suggested to "just" let us specify a path to an external asset/palette/brush/whatever library location without the hassle of an own cloud. This way even local network paths would be an option without needing to sync over the internet.

  9. Would also be a great thing for small teams to share assets. Easiest solution would be setting a path in the preferences to point to the external asset storage location. This way the user could either choose a cloud synced folder (via dropbox, onedrive, gdrive, ...) or an external hard drive.

Only thing to keep in mind would be Affinity Designer checking the file version of the asset file when accessing the assets panel.
