    Hi Lemniscat,

    Welcome to the forums :)

There is no tool or feature for this at the moment I'm afraid.

    Thanks

    C

    Hi Callum.

I agree with, it would be great.
When I was young I use Indesign, I save a lot of time organising layers in Photoshop and Illustrator so, when I import those files to Indesign, I was able to choose which layers I would like to see in that place. The same file (a single file) was enough for lots of imports, just choosing which layers (or layer comps) I need.
Please, if it's not asking too much, would you consider implementing this?

Really, the workflow is much easier this way.
Now, I'm doing the wrong way: place a Designer file in Publisher, double click, choose the layers I need, copy, back to Publisher file, paste and repeat for other places. Then I simple remove the original Designer file I place and finally save.
8 steps, when I should need only 3: place, choose layers, repeat.

    Thanks a lot.

I think looking at the raw market share might be misleading.

The percentage of wide variety of developers is a lot higher on Linux than on Windows. I know a lot of web developers who use Linux and would throw their money at you for sure.

Also, if you are worrying about Linux users not wanting to pay for software, JetBrains seems to be doing awesome. As far as I know every piece of their software runs on Linux also.

I've been trying Linux (Ubuntu) and really miss applications like Affinity's, to work professionally. GIMP helps, InkSape helps, Scribus helps but they are far from ideal, lack integration Affinity offers.
As I said, soon I'll have to quit using mac and really don't want to use Windows. I'll go to linux and if I don't have affinity there I'll do my best with these above.

Thanks, we have this reproduced internally and logged. Restarting the app should correct the behaviour, and from our testing it only happens when the studio is undocked and "moved" around quite alot

I couldn't "repeat" the problem. But I'm glad I could help. I'll keep posting if I find anything weird.

Anyway, thanks for this app (and Photo and Designer). You're doing a amazing job there!

Hi Just downloaded the .exe file for Publisher version 1.7.0.312, I get this error message:

"This app can't run on your PC". I haven't had this problem before.

    Using Windows 10 desktop.

    Thanks

    John L

I had a warning because Publisher beta wasn't downloaded from Windows Store. Microsoft asked if I want to install Affinity Designer, instead. I said no thanks and asked to install anyway.
    Was that your problem?
About 1.7.0.312, when Publisher asked me to download the update, it pointed me to 312 version. Which was the one I had. I try again, and it downloaded 312 again. I went to affinity website and am downloading the 337.

Something is wrong with the screenshot, check the size of the folder and the size of the Affinity file inside that folder.

Edit to add: I agree the current 'Embed everything' linking behaviour is very bad.

In fact! Didn't notice that. MacOS sucks sometimes :-) It was missing an update to the folder size.

Follow the correct shot. Job done, it raised more than 80MB from that point. Just a couple of images

  6. I think it's a good point. In fact, I noticed that too.
I'm working on a magazine. The editions are very similar, using basically the same content/files/sizes. When I was using Indesign (CS5), it has 37MB.
I'm rebuilding it using Publisher Beta (I now it's beta, it's a working progress and I'm doing this to test the app under real conditions, my share when I accepted trying the beta) and, not finished yet, I have a file with 703MB.

    Screen shot attached.

I just think Affinity crew should, later in the proper moment, think about this.

This is a good point and I will keep this into consideration. But since it is a layout/publishing program - or am I wrong about that -  this missing feature makes it (for lack of a correct phrase) just a hobby program. How is one to do catalogs? For my purposes - I will have to create labels or hand write addresses. Which means one more thing to purchase, layout/create and manually apply. What a shame. I loved serif and have purchased the other two Affinity  programs both for Windows and Mac. In fact that was the best thing about all of them - they could be used on either and the files were editable on either os - AND they are so affordable. I am still a fan and will hope for the best.

But they never said they won't do it. Just need a little more time to do they the right way. And probably we'll be able to test it a lot before it goes to commercial. I understand I was "gifted" with the opportunity to help developing a better app. Beta testing is this, we don't have the final version, we're helping build it.

I really don't complaint about data merge lacking (or that I can't import my GBs of INDD and save a lot of work), because this is a beta version. A going work. I'm testing the best I can, trying to find holes and bugs (like the diacritics problem I have when writing in portuguese -- like typing ' and a to get "á", which is giving me " 'á " instead).

Let's wait. Be patient... This is a real pro app, able to face Indesign straight in the eyes and say "I'm better than you and a lot cheaper".

  8. Well, I'm really interested and anxious about data merge but, guys, let's be patient. The Affinity guys are doing a GREAT job, delivering excellent product.

I'm pretty sure they're listening to us. They said they have some other stuff to take care before. I truly believe they'll add data merge to Publisher in the due time.

I'm waiting, and testing other features they already done as much as I can. I must say I'm very happy using Publisher beta as my first app, already rebuilding some INDD files I have from scratch, testing all my workflow.

    Be patient.

I do not understand the persistent moaning about Indesign files.

Export to pdf & archive. For text, click in text & export to Word if that is the problem. Perform "Package” for all non-text.

Ask a friend how you to batch (or automate) this, in case you want to do that with ‘many’ files.

If this is not sufficient, simply use... Indesign.

I do not understand the need for opening Indesign files. Nobody sends Indesign files to someone else. An Indesign-file is only in use as long as your job has not been finalised.

So what is the problem ?

I don't understand why you are moaning about our needs.
The problem isn't text or linked files. The problem is text styles, color palletes, hifenization exceptions and a lot of things you can't get from PDF. And you're wrong: sometimes I receive indd files. And I don't want to use Indesign anymore.
If you don't have this problem, lucky you. But, please, if this is not a problem to you, just watch.

I do not understand “updating an Indesign-file”. Please send me a pdf of a Indesign-file that you update now and then. I do not understand how you can have thousands of files. Say you make one publication a week, you have made one every week for the last 20 years.

Well, not thousands, today. But dozens. Newsletters, magazines, reports... Files I've been use year after year, changing here and there, but based on a structure (text styles, master pages, color palettes for instance) that I would have to rebuild.

The point is: I don't have time to rebuild all those files. I'm still using Adobe CS5 (I don't wanna pay per month to use Indesign).
If I have a way to import/convert/use indeed files in Publisher it would save me a lot of time. And sleep.

Do that using a PDF file is the same of doing that from zero. I know how to do that, I can do that, but I don't want to do that, if I have another way.

The problem is I (and I believe a lot of people) have thousands of files of work built using InDesign. Most of them I need to update frequently or use as a base to new jobs. Been able to open or import an Indesign file would save time and work, since I wouldn't need to rebuild all.

Which evolution?! Should have been launched since 2015 …

Well, I only knew they're working on this last year. I think they're doing a great job, since it's not easy to assemble so many functions in an app so efficient like this. I'm sure they're taking the time they need. But, if you're not happy with their schedule, there are a lot of options out there...

Gabe does not know, even Serif does not know. What we know is that Serif only has plans for idml. But it seems that we have to wait a long time.

Affinity Publisher will not support .INDD files but will be able to import IDML files.

We will be able to import InDesign IDML files but not .indd files. The feature is being written but we don't have a timescale yet.

Well, I'll wait. I'm very satisfied with Publisher evolution. Serif is doing a wonderful job. I'm sure they'll do the best. ;-)
