Thank you for the link, I am on a MAC.

I have a bunch of files, similar to the one attached, that are drawings, I think they were done in Deneba Canvas over 20 years ago, that is drawing program although you could do a lot of things with it. However, I no longer have that program and can't figure out how to open them. Any ideas? I have added .svg, .eps and and several others, but they are still unopenable.

So glad to have found this topic and answer! New to affinity and I couldn't figure out how to save anything in another format!

Thank you. I had looked at all the various choices in the Menu Bar, but had no idea what "Clipped to Canvas" meant!

So far I am very happy with Affinity Designer. Does exactly what I need. Adobe abandoned those of us who don't want to subscribe to Illustrator. On to my question. When I have designed something and need to add to it I like to be able to work off of the artboard or on the "background." However, if I move an object off of the artboard on to the background and click away from it, it is no longer visible. I have lightened the Background Gray Levels, but the object is still invisible. I see no changes in the Artboard Gray Levels. I am working in MACOS 10.13. Is it me or the fact that this is the free trial or...? Probably the workaround would be to insert another artboard and delete it when I am done, but this was one feature that I took for granted in AI.

Thank you for the detailed information. I was an avid Canvas user, and then went straight to Illustrator. I am worried that now that they are now just selling subscriptions to "the cloud" I may run into problems with it too. I did have to change some Javascript to get it to run on my computer.
