I love how each tool can have its own double tap shortcut but the shortcut options are limited.
My favorite use of the pencil so far is doing alpha masks. It’s so perfect, precise, and quick in the app + pencil that I’ll probably never do curve selections for cutouts again! One very common task when drawing alpha masks is to switch between black and white colors to draw what part of the layer is visible (white) and what part is hidden (black)
Request: Allow double tap shortcut for pencil that switches between two colors, kinda like hitting the X key in photoshop. This will let me quickly swap between black and white brush tool colors when working on alpha masks.

Another thought on this topic is that would be more powerful and more generically useful is to have a customisable "temporary tool" area in the bottom left of the screen that stays across personas. For example if the move tool was added here then while you hold a finger down on it the move tool would be switched to, so from the selection persona you could quickly move the current selection, but when you let go it switches straight back to previous tool (eg the lasso tool) so there are no further clicks to happen to get back to the other tool you were using (eg to select a new area to move). This would be similar to how you hold down the spacebar on the desktop version to temporarily activate the hand tool.

Great work with Affinity Photo on iOS! I was doing some editing of textures the other day and found the workflow for lasso selection and moving things around really slow at the moment. I would really appreciate the Move tool being promoted to the Selections persona, and also for the last selected tool on a particular persona to remain selected when switching between personas.

I also use a progam called Moi3D which has a great selection tool, if you drag a rectangle from left to right you have to surround entire objects to make them selected, but if you drag from right to left they only have to intersect with objects. This is super useful since you don't have to switch modes via some option like you currently have to do with Photo.

    Totally agree.
It is inconvient frequently switching between the Photo and Selection personas.
It will be good to have a customizable tool area at the bottom left corner.
At least, the most frequently used tools, e.g. delete/move/copy/cut/paste, should be made availbe in Selection persona.
    Thanks.

Haven’t really seen any keyboard additions yet. The touch gestures (1, 2, or 3 finger holds) help to replace some keyboard features, such as holding shift/cmd whilst transforming an object etc, but I don’t find them as easy to use whilst working fast.

I used AP on the iPad with the Apple Keyboard attached, and there are quite some shortcuts working.
E and B are for eraser and brush, CMD+C copies a marqueed selection and CMD+V pastes it as a new layer. The same works for the currently selected layer.
Just play around, You might be surprised what already works via keyboard. Be aware that the same keys have different functions depending on the persona.

    Hi there,
it would be very useful if you can add the Infer LUT functionality that is already built into the Mac and Windows version to the iPad version of the app.
    Thanks,

    1. Convert your image to LAB mode.
    2. Duplicate the layer, and name the lower one "L" (luminosity) and the upper one "C" (color).
    3. Go to the channels studio for "L" and click on the "..." for AOpponent, and click "Clear". Do the same for BOpponent.
    4. Go to the channels studio for "C" and click on the "..." for Lightness, and click "Clear" and then "Invert".
    5. Change the blend mode for "C" to "Color".
    6. Duplicate "L" and name the lower one "L blur", then apply a blur filter of your choice (Gaussian or median, etc.) to this layer.
    7. Create a new group named "High pass" and place "L" inside it. Then, duplicate "L blur" and place it above "L" (inside the "High pass" group).
    8. Go to the channels studio for the copy of "L blur" inside the "High pass" group, click the "..." for Lightness, and click "Invert". Set the blend opacity to 50% (blend mode normal).
    9. Set the blend mode for the "High pass" group to linear light, and then rasterize the group if you wish.

Divide is still not available on any platform AFAIK. Don't know why, but you can use color dodge instead if you invert your blend layer. Same with linear burn which would be nice to have... The workaround is to use subtract, and invert your blend layer.

Here’s an example for the new method: (.afphoto file attached at the end.)
(Note also that if you blend (mode = “overlay”) the hue/saturation layer over the luminosity layer, you get the original layer back... so this can also be used for other purposes.)

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve used this for a while now - the only issue is it underestimates saturation somewhat if the luminosity is not always 50 (HSL value). I found a way to make a layer where hue/saturation is preserved, but luminosity is set to 50. This resolves the issue. (Note: blending with a layer where luminosity is 50 with the “luminosity” blend mode does not work - nor do any similar approaches. The luminosity result is close to 50 but varies, and hue/saturation values are affected.)

Here’s how to map saturation values exactly to luminosity values:

    1. Create a HSL adjustment layer, and set saturation to -100. (Don’t turn on HSV!)
    2. Merge visible. The result is a B&W layer that contains only luminosity values. (Note: desaturation, setting color to grey, etc. using pixel/fill layers/curves does not get this quite right!)
    3. Invert the B&W luminosity layer, and set blend mode to “vivid light”.
    4. Merge visible. The result is a layer containing only hue and saturation values. Luminosity is constant (always 50 by HSL).

Now that you have separated luminosity and hue/saturation into their own layers, apply the instructions you shared above to the hue/saturation layer:

    5. Create a HSL adjustment layer, and set saturation to -100. (Turn on HSV!) Set blend mode to “difference”.
    6. Create another HSL adjustment layer, and set saturation to -100. (Turn on HSV!) Set blend mode to “normal”.
    7. Merge visible. The result is a B&W layer containing only saturation values, mapped to luminosity values. This is your saturation mask.

    Hello,
An option to make the Histogram visible/floating while doing any of the other adjustments. This would be useful for example when adjusting the levels or brightness tool and keeping it open while switching layers etc.

Affinity Photo includes an awesome "Blend Ranges" feature that I use to accomplish exposure blending with my photographs. It takes a little practice, but this tool is more flexible than Photoshop's "Blend If" sliders (because it supports customizable and non-linear luminosity feathering), and more efficient than Luminosity masks (smaller file size).

I would love to see the efficiency of this feature further improved by the addition of presets within the blend ranges panel to create common blending curves, which would save me the trouble of frequently recreating similar curves over and over again. Presets such as "highlights only", "midtones only", "shadows only" or combinations of these would be a real time saver. It would also be great to see the histograms of the current layer, and composite histogram of the layers below, drawn behind the respective curve graphs in this panel. Without histograms it's hard to visualize how the luminosity information is distributed across the current layer and the layers below, and creating the blend curves becomes a bit more of a trial-and-error process to find the right spots in the X-axis to start or end your curve.

Photoshop users have plugins like Raya Pro and Lumenzia that make exposure blending easier, although they suffer from poor UI and other issues. It would be great if Affinity Photo put some more effort into fleshing out the Blend Ranges feature for photographers who want to do manual exposure blending.

It seems that this problem has been known for some time, yet there is little evidence of a fix coming along soon. The comment about Windows suggests that there are different issues for the desktop versions. I use a Mac for "desktop" work, but the iPad version is hopeless for some applications even with an Apple pencil, as it's not possible to see what's actually happening well enough.
In the meantime Serif seem to be putting effort into Publisher and other products. This is a pity, as perhaps a little attention to some problems and user feedback for existing products would pay dividends. I still fee that the Serif tools are good, but the problem with not being able to see the size of the brush with visual feedback in the iPad versions is a real pain.

    Hello Affinity Team,

Is there a way to preview the cursor/brush size while painting or brushing? I understand the iPad doesn't have hover support but at least while brushing, I hope to see the boundaries of the brush.

    Thank you so much!

    Hi,
I attached a link to a YouTube link that demonstrates how the liquify push tool starts to tear the image and distort in the wrong place.
In the video I’ve shown how using the AP push tool in one area doesn’t have the desired effect. Then how Procreates liquify push tool response as it should by smoothly pushing the pixels not swirling them after a number of strokes.
I made the spacing in the mesh smaller to allow it to be more accurate. I’ve tried this with the larger spacing as well and it made no difference.
Leaving the liquify push tool as it is only adds limitations to a workflow. Please consider fixing this.
