Can you edit layer masks like a normal layer?

I have been using Affinity photo since a month now, and have been using masks very extensively. But today I was adding a mask, but wasn't able to edit it, using the paint brush tool (Tried Black/White all colours). Please help. I checked everything .. my mask layer is selected when I am trying to modify it. Screenshot attached (The circular brush/cursor should show me the preview of the brush effect on the mask ... correct? ... but it doesn't). Please suggest what am I doing wrong?

I am trying to File->> Place the same image (different exposure) as a new layer, but am not able to get 100% alignment (by dragging it over the canvas). Is there a way to re align all the existing layers with the new Layer? -
Hi I am trying to do colour selection in Affinity photo (i.e. sample colours from different parts of the photo, and all those colour regions should get selected) , but (unlike adobe photoshop) I don't see the option to add selections of different colours. Can you plz tell me how to colour select more than one colour? I am doing Select -> Select Sampled Colours -> (Then how to make selection for multiple colours)
