There's an announcement in the startup panel, though I know some folks uncheck "Show this panel at startup". (And I appreciate Serif respecting that and not forcing a pop-up announcing V2 through anyway.)

I always turn off startup panels in every app, lol. I didn't block emails from Affinity, because they weren't sending  me stuff daily. If they had been annoying, I would have unsubscribed. So I saw the V2 email and purchased.

I never knew there were so many photo managers in the world until this thread.  I never heard of any of them but I downloaded and installed most of them to check them out.  Now I see the problem with the workflows for most people.

But why didn't Affinity-Serif release their own in this V2 version like ACDSEE, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom and other big programs have?  I use the first two for that and not Lightroom because it is not worth the monthly cost to me.  Or the thumbnails in Windows.

I've been using XNView for close to 20 years now. At the time, I tried others, like ACDSee and FastStone, but XN did what I wanted it to in an easier way, for me at least.

I'd also be interested in an Affinity-based image manager.

Is the gotcha that because it will take time for the MSI installers to be produced, the launch discount price will be ancient history by then?  If so, will the workaround be to buy the MSIX version now (at the discount price), not install it, and then download the MSI versions, for free, when they are released?

There's no reason you couldn't install it now, and uninstall it when the MSI is available. Unless you had other reservations about the MSIX in general.

Hi all. Thanks for your patience over the weekend when our offices were closed.

We've had a meeting this morning and decided to offer MSI installers to those people who would like them. I can't tell you when this will happen, as there is engineering work that will be required to allow this to happen, but we hope it won't be long.

    Thanks for your feedback!

Thank you Mark, and the rest of the staff!

I immediately found a workaround for Unity3D. Create a .bat file with the contents:

You don't even need the cd command. Since the alias already points to that. only the second line is needed. I just tested it and it works fine. Better than your first suggestion (which does work and I was using), which will break after the first update. The bat file should be good indefinitely.

Guys, I was a bit miss-informed and angry too, but it seems that App Execution Aliases works and solves integration problems.

The aliases did not work for me. I had to use the actual executable buried in Program Files\WindowsApps, which is typically hidden by Windows. I know that path name will change on an update, but I see that They are going to offer traditional MSI installers for those who want it, so I'm happy to wait.

Not superior, just different. Why care where the program is when all you need to do it run & use it

Because 99% of my use of APhoto is selecting images in XNView and hitting Alt 2 (the shortcut in that application for APhoto that I assigned). That doesn't work with V2 if there are spaces in either the path or filename. Photo v2 just gives me a bunch of error messages.

And the shortcuts created by dragging the icons from the start menu to the desktop aren't visible to other standard applications. The shortcut I manually created is visible, but the result when I try to pass data to it is above. For me, to use PhotoV2 in the way I've become accustomed to using every other application I have used for the last 20 years is the issue. It is not worthwhile to have to open V2 separately, then navigate to the drive>folder in question, then reselect all the files I had already selected in my image manager, then open them. It may seem trivial to some, but it isn't to me.

I'm not trying to pile on the Serif, I've enjoyed their programs. But if their soon-to-be solution doesn't let me function in the way I've outlined, it's not worth my time.

We already have app execution aliases installed to:

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityDesigner2.exe

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPhoto2.exe

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPublisher2.exe

Please replace username with your Windows username. Also, those paths are already in your %PATH% variable so you can launch them without even specifying the full path, e.g. AffinityPhoto2.exe.

Mark, I can create a new shortcut on my desktop that will successfully launch Photo 2, simply by supplying the executable name in the link. But, I cannot then use that shortcut from another application (in my case, XnView). It tells me the same thing as if I had tried to execute by directly navigating to the exe.

I'm new to the discussion, so I've probably missed something in your posts.

At any rate, I never uninstalled Photo V1, so I still have functionality. Hoping this gets fixed soon so my workflows can still flow with the shiny new Photo/Publisher/Designer V2.

However, the tool also seems sensitive to the orientation of the image. Given a portrait orientation, it seems (though I have not tested extensively) that the tool will prefer to orient the crop box with the longer dimension running vertically, but given a landscape orientation it will prefer to orient the box with the longer dimension running horizontally.

Again, if it guesses wrong you can use the Rotate button.

I would rather it not guess. I chose a specific ratio for a reason, to crop out an image with that ratio and orientation, not a guessed one.

It's a duplicate in the sense that they're the same except for a rotation, and with one push of the Rotate button on the Context Toolbar 4:5 becomes 5:4.

Mathematically, 4:5 is not the same as 5:4. I see your point, but it's not the same. The reason for creating a custom ratio is to reduce the number of repetitious steps one has to take. As I pointed out before, rotating doesn't just make something correct. You then have to fiddle with it to make it fit what you're doing. If the ratio was what I wanted in the first place, much less fiddling.
