It is worth noting that New from clipboard creates an image layer. Because I am not a big user of photo, publisher being my main tool, I sometimes forget this when I am looking at the forum and want to try out techniques. For instance the recent one about the image with a girls hair selection. So having a bit of time on my hands I right clicked and copied image and the open photo and selected new form clip board. Not picking up the fact that is an image layer I choose the selection brush go round the main image then go to refine and go through the process of refining the selection and then apply, only to find I have done all this work for nothing as I cannot change that image. Is there a warning feature that I have turned off in assistant that stops me being warned this image cannot be altered when a choose the selection brush? if not it would be helpful

Import from Word

To import a word docx create an apub document then use file use File>Place and select the word document and place in the apub document, this is the same as importing a PDF I think. -
Printing from Publisher to MS print to pdf

On further testing this seems to be a related to machine set up and how Affinity interacts, something way beyond my scope but I know in the early days that Publisher would install without problems on my laptop but need administrator rights on my PC. Now I have that Print to PDF works ok on my PC , but fails to create the content yet creates the empty file on my laptop, I have run the setup report for MS Print to pdf and they are identical on both machines and they are both running the same version of windows 10, so looks like one of those things that are going to be machine specific and hard to pin down. At least now I can work round it using export on my laptop and then 2 to a page print from MS Print to pdf and use the N-up print on my PC. If the developers want any more info let me know. -

The reason I do not use the export option, which by the way is my fall back , is because it adds an extra stage. This process is for a range of documents all sharing the same design from A3 to A4 & A5, I start with A3 then scale to size to fit the other formats . To obtain the A5, which we print on our A4 colour printer I duplicate the A3 page so I have two documents which need to fit on A4 so the advance print options should deal with this hence having a N-up option and shrink to fit. I am not sure if there is a step and repeat function where it would fill a sheet just using the one document page to fill as many copies as required on the one page, something we would do in my distant past when producing images for litho plate-making in the 60's. -
Hi I am trying to use the print facility in Publisher to print two up on A4 Landscape using print to pdf, some times this works, other times it creates a 0kb file. if I export the document and then use MS print to pdf to do the same thing it works every time. My print settings are as below, this has happened on various documents. Not sure if this is a known bug or am I missing a setting

Hi Just trying to get some idea on how others work with assets, brushes, styles etc. I think I am falling in to the trap of seeing something in the resources category on the forum and thinking I will install that and see what i can do with it. My understanding is the location of these is fixed and cannot be moved or shared in the c/user\appdata\roaming/affinity\1.0\application-name\user\ I have my laptop and desktop both running windows 10 and both with 250GB SSD drives for the boot C: drive and all 3 applications both latest release and beta i.e. 6 folders plus some that seem to have a backup also,, so the C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\ is starting to grow in size. I also have an affinity resource folder on my one drive where I export assets so I can co-ordinate them across the two machines and the original download files . Do you have a repository and delete and reload as you go along So how do others deal with this? to you decide which program has certain assets or brushes and not duplicating them i.e. put styles just in Designer and use studio if you need them in publisher? Put vector brushes in designer and raster brushes in photo and use the links to carry out the process in the different application. I cannot imagine how teams manage things like this, i used to think synchronising fonts was bad enough across machines, but at least there are font managers that allow me to use fonts without having to install them from shared locations on my one drive synched folders. So any good practice or suggestions will be greatly received

Being Able to see bleed Clearly

Thanks Lagarto for the explanation and the work round I will use that for my A4 and A5 templates, also the other orientations. At least it is something they are aware of, I set the bleed to 5 mm knowing I was over the line, but the printing company I use automatically sets it at 3 mmm when I upload, I was more concerned that I was hitting the edge and leaving the yellow still showing as a guide then I new I had not gone too far over. Hi I know this has been discussed previously that is is hard to see the bleed outline when working in the light mode. I have astigmatism and working in the dark mode is uncomfortable in intense work, but I then have the bleed line problem in light mode. So I thought I would be clever and set up templates for my popular A paper sizes where I have a rectangle that lives in the bleed and remove it in the master before printing, this worked fine on the master and if I copy and paste the rectangle to pages, but if I create a page from a master the rectangle appears small, yet the dimensions show as the same in the transform box. Hi As mentioned in previous posts all my work has been for Charities or community groups FOC. Whilst these may not be overboard in design they illustrate the jobbing printing capability of Affinity. The last few weeks have seen me fully switch from Page Plus to the full Affinity suite and I thought I would share some of the work inc a 32 page brochure about Health Services in our community, much of it working from a range of supplied pdfs and images. We received the printed version today and it has been well received. You can see the online copy at the printers website https://mixam.co.uk/share/5d6a5d422b0e5d1600d4a8d7 I have also done a 6ft x 2ft Banner to display in the town using Affinity throughout, shown below, also leaflets and posters The only thing I have resorted to using in the serif suite recently has been draw plus for the autotrace function to convert photos to svg and when exported as pdf Affinity loads them without problem, it can save a lot of time when creating svgs. So I gave thumbs up for this as a feature request in Affinity PS I am on page 3 of the brochure

Hi First of all can I please say a big thank you to all those users who post resources freely, it is greatly appreciated, I have had some spectacular result with downloaded resources. I am just posting this as it is one of my frustrations and may be the same for others on the forum. I design a text layout that I am happy with but want to embellish the headline, I quite often load a style which the designer has saved using a particular font and point size that I may not have installed on my PC so Affinity substitutes a font and the point size is entirely different to the one in my design, I have to then go in and change it to my font and point size and see if it works for me, if not I can end up going through the same procedure numerous times. I do not know if there is an action to retain my font and point size, if so I am missing it. What I do when I have imported a set of styles is pick one of my favourite fonts and set it to a big size. If when I apply the style it changes them I create a rectangle with the shape tool and apply the style to that and then import it back into my styles from the rectangle using add style from selection, then delete the one linked to a font and size.. When I then apply if my font and point size remain unchanged. Sorry if you feel this is in the wrong category but is applies to resources.

To test it I use projects I am working on and have found Studio Link so useful as a workflow, maybe just me as it is confusing getting used to the different working from the Serif Legacy products, I want to keep to a structure that is same in both live and beta and I can wait. I am sure there are others like myself. I am not a full time designer and do not charge for any work I do as it is all for charities. May be the fact that I served my apprenticeship in printing in the 1960's when an IBM Varityper with Golf Ball head was considered a big advance, and left the trade in the 1970's that I am stuck in my ways.

I came to the download from another part of the forum Reporting bugs in Publisher where it dos not state about the Studio Link not working in this version, as I had read the changes in that part of the forum I did not read it again in here and went ahead with the upgrade, now need to wait for Photo and Designer Betas to be upgraded before fully functional and use it. May be best updating that posting to advise of this issue

Photo offered update on third time of launching, will try Designer once this is updated -
I went in to Publisher and it advised there was a new version, whilst it was downloading I went in to the forum and found that Designer and Photo had also been updated so I opened those applications and neither offered a new version from 1.7.1 If I go to my account to download from there will it over right my settings in my existing versions or is there something else I can do. There does not appear to be a manual check for updatesin the programs

Crop problem still not fixed!

I think the problem is that with 1:1 photo has to choose one dimension to start the crop and in this case is choosing the longest dimension, whether previously it chose the short dimension I do not know or if there is a setting to change the preference. However if you click on rotate before applying the custom dimension it will crop the 1:1 to the shortest dimension -
I do not know if this is just in the Beta or may be the same for retail version also. I went to export a leaflet I had designed and it said there was overflowing text. As there was not many text boxes I just clicked on each and none showed as overflowing. As I was in preview mode I clicked this off with no difference. I then clicked outside the document and the overflow box was highlighted with a red dot. I have attached the file as it is not sensitive material. I also did not spot it as it read ok without the other wording showing. I do not know if because the other text boxes overlapped had any bearing myGP App.afpub

Thanks for your reply If you find the previous threads on this subject you will find I have tried many options and others have had the same problem with Arial and this was just an observation to show that Publisher breaks at ligatures when highlighting the text with the font manager locate tool I am quite happy with the Google Fonts Roboto family and with this being recommended for web use I will use this as my standard sans body font as most of my work is for viewing online.

I am starting this as a new thread as there are numerous postings re ligatures and I just wanted an observation to be picked up across them all. I decided to download the beta versions of the Affinity suite and load my newsletter in there as I wanted to try substituting the Roboto family font for the Arial in the newsletter and to test the beta in general. I used the font manager to locate Arial fonts and then change them for the Roboto equivalent Every time the font manager found the Arial font it stopped highlighting the section where a ligature occurred, I then had to change the ligature separately then carry on and highlight the rest of the text. selecting all the text to change in that text box seemed to still need conversion or it would not convert it. After substituting all the Arial fonts for Roboto equivalent I exported with the web PDF preset and all the ligatures appeared in the Chrome browser - lesson learnt to not use Arial with Affinity Publisher
