Scaling line length - Designer as a basic CAD application

Was hoping to use AD to do a simple garden plan but need to be able to check line length. Cannot find this feature and from this thread looks like it's not available, am I right?

Is it possible to get Windows Explorer to display thumb nail picture of an "afphoto" file? Can I export pictures in DNG?
