Plug-Ins, Add-Ons, Add-Ins, Extensions
RickyO replied to Joachim_L's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
It is common for this to happen. However, my thoughts are it would only add a burden on Serif to have to staff and add functionality to accredit each offerings. Not sure how that would impact allowing them to focus more on core issues. But still, I'm sure you will see such plugins appear. Look at WordPress as an example. -
I'll be the first to admit, I am NOT an accomplished photo artist. In fact, I would put myself at a "3" or "4" on a 1 - to - 10 ability scale. Therefore, I am always looking for more and more lessons to increase my skills and enhance my talents. In doing so, I hope to gain the most from the Affinity tutorials, given I'm a registered user of all three apps. And therein lies the frustration. In short, when I attempt to watch the Affinity tutorials, the presenter starts by introducing the subject, and then proceeds to open an image, and in doing so, nearly always opens up a series of layers he has already created. Unfortunately, he has also renamed them, so those of us who are learning, have no (grrrrrr) clue of how or why he created them. Therefore, HOW ARE WE EXPECTED TO KNOW WHAT, OR HOW HE IS PROCEEDING? It's obvious he is 'assuming' we all can successfully guess what the hell he has done, why, and with which tools. (Beyond frustrating; more importantly, it is a terrible representation of Affinity.) Specifically, these tutorials are high on the 'frustration menu': Blend Modes (https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/310319088/). He calls them 'render passes'. No definition of 'render passes', (I can interpret such a term in a number of ways given it's out of context. I spent the better part of any hour searching for 'render passes' without luck.) Layers (https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/311178905/). Even in this video covering basic layering, he begins with a highly populated list of layers. HE KNOWS WHAT THOSE LAYERS ARE, WE DO NOT! How can we get a strong, integrated understanding (i.e. without obvious questions popping up such as, "What are those layers, why did he chose them, and how did he create them?") It would only take a few minutes to explain them and build the lesson from the beginning instead of beginning the tutorial at some arbitrary point along a learning curve. At the least, reference those tutorials which provide the lessons for creating the components he is utilizing. The list of other similar examples is long. The solution is to include the steps he has left out prior to his video starting point. PLEASE, make videos for the audience, not the perspective of the presenter. If you are going to start with pre-created elements in support of a subject, take the time to explain them. You know what they are, but if you expect us to get value from the tutorial, you have to explain yourself so we are on the same page as you. Thank You.

I agree, would be very helpful; especially a selectable option. (Thanks for stating your option respectfully!) -
Download of new version fails

It seems, from a few searches, Chrome has some issues with this type of error. Try another browser, maybe Firefox. -
ASCII symbol inserting
RickyO replied to RickyO's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on Windows threads
Yes, just found it..... Silly me. Thanks though. (Frustration vs. finding correct help search terms. It's a beta; to be expected.) Is there an icon for the Glyph Browser in the 'Customize Tools' area? Didn't see one. If not, maybe one could be added. Just thinking via the keyboard. Thanks again. -
Am I missing something?? Trying to find an intuitive/efficient way of inserting the ASCII symbols without having to use the Alt- commands. Also, don't want to have to switch typeface to get just one character. Maybe a symbol sub-tool could be added? Or, a separate tool?? Just stumbling along... Thanks in advance.

This may seem somewhat simple-minded, but for those who will be first-time users, it would be nice to have optional help pop-up dialogue boxes for any of the set-up pages or parameter adjustment elements. Such a feature could be switchable (on/off) in the Preference settings. This would allow for better understanding of each parameter or setting when defining a document or project; which in-turn reduces time costs, support inquiries, et al. Just a thought.

Just stumbled across this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1mOXZneX5s. Maybe someone could come up with something for Affinity Photo to compete with it. Just a thought. Thanks.

THANKS! for the quick response. I've been doing that, but not quite getting the results I am hoping for. Would like to get the neon effect with outside blur/fade (among others...). Any ideas as to which combos may get me there? Thanks again. p.s. Am also looking for an online how-to video specific to the Xenon pack (on desktop). I'm using Win10Pro.

Looking to find typeface or font bundles which have the visual effects of what the Serif Xenon Brush Pack Bundle (https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/store/product/xenon-brush-pack-bundle/ does for brushes. To be used in all three Affinity packages. Thanks in advance.

Had the same issue with a previous version, but was called away on some health issues so could not respond. However, two revs later I tried again and issue had disappeared. By letting Serif know, as you have, maybe they can look into their bug hx for similar. Please let them know more details, i.e. what platform, et al. Good Luck!

v.1.7.0.174 Install failed
RickyO replied to RickyO's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
I've downloaded multiple times; tried install multiple times; even stripped out the existing content and started fresh install. All come back "Setup failed". I can reinstall 162, but 174 continues to fail. -
All updates prior went fine. This one, did not. Could install back to 162, but 174 simply returned a dialogue box of "Install failed". Would be nice if some hint could be provided with the fail. Any ideas? Win10Pro with a ton of RAM and SSD space.

I think this thread is touching on an area I've been just introducing myself to in the last couple of months; one that on the surface doesn't appear to be related to Affinity apps, but I believe could be (and maybe should be). It started with adjusting color on my monitors, only to discover an entire science focused on color correction starting at doc/image creation and running through final output, no matter what that output is. It entails camera correction, white balance, monitor correction, printer syncing including specificity for inks, toners, different paper types, online viewing devices (work stations, tablets, smartphones and whatever device they can invent by a week from Friday). Where it touches on Affinity is, I'm wondering if such correction/syncing/matching) couldn't somehow be better served if integrated into the early production apps, such as AP, APub, AG. Just another one of those strange ideas that keep wondering between my ears. Thanks.

Remove table cell borders
RickyO replied to JudyL's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
That works; but, could something more like Judy's method be added in addition to the steps you provided? Her thoughts/actions seemed more intuitive. Thanks! -
Just about one bit in your post: If anyone is still using Win98, or anything earlier than Win7 for that matter, I hope you consider the issue of your workstation being vulnerable to a host of security issues which not only affect you, but in some instances, everyone else your machine can connect to directly or indirectly. It's a matter of security; and when a previous version of an OS or even an application is dropped from being supported (as all Windows prior to 7 have been), it means no one is monitoring whether it is vulnerable to being hacked and used in hundreds of nefarious ways. Please, if you are using unsupported offerings, please update or replace. Thanks.
