  1. I've been a Windows person from the beginning (still have a complete install set of 3.5" disks for Windows 2....). Have to say though, this info on the Mini has my attention; especially at the pricing (and given that getting the graphics adapter I want is literally impossible), I need to know more. I was up around $5K in my planning, even if I could get the parts. This Mini may just provide me what I can use and allow for a monitor upgrade. All of my graphics and webdev apps are Win-oriented, so I have to consider the expense to upgrade.
  2. Desktop, not laptop. One retailer has it with i5 & M1 graphics: See attachments Another has a version with i7, but is using : What I think is a real advantage is the 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you add a Thunderbolt box, it really can get you further up the mountain:
  3. For both James and Jeff: I'm confused on the cpu. BB is showing the M1 version for $700; and the i5 w/M1 for graphics at $1100. Any input as to which you are using and comparisons? Thanks.
  4. It's been a few months. Anything new in graphics accelerators? (Still not finding any availability in the nVidia product line....)
  5. Purchased from Serif. Have been for years. Patrick posted a reference at: Again, that just creates another "step" in that the paying customer, has to again go out to another reference to stay updated. My original suggestion eliminates all this unnecessary work in order to simply stay current. Serif can do better. I don't like mentioning other products, but for example-sake. We use Bvuckup2 (https://bvckup2.com/) for our archiving and backup. If you test their trial, you will see an example of the update function. Comparatively, it is fast, efficient, and intuitive in its access point. Why Serif wouldn't offer a similar system is beyond me. Just sayin'.
  6. No, I don't believe so. I received an email the other day stating there was a new version, but upon opening Photo, nothing signalling it. Currently have 1.9.2.1035
  7. I'm just thinking it might save a lot of registered users a lot of time if, ... there was an automated notice in all three applications which would announce to the user when a new version of the app is available. In other apps we use, it is common to find an option under the 'Help' link in the top bar, that offers a 'Check for New Version' option. They appear to maintain registration security, and it just takes the app to their update server(s), checks what version is already installed on the user's desktop, and I'm assuming it checks for registration compliance. many then offer another link to go ahead and download and install. It's quick, effective, and reliable. Just a thought.
  8. Yes, that seems to have worked. An independent contributor on the MS community site suggested it also. I have no understanding why a valid license of the app didn't update. The contributor did say my original version was "five years old"; which I find interesting because I bought it as a boxed full install product at a national big box store about a year and a half ago when MS stopped supporting Win7. Of interest was the contributor's directions to download the ISO and simply 2xclick on it to run it, as compared to having to burn the ISO to media and then installing from there; but it worked. Going forward, I'm considering only purchasing directly from MS and downloading should they ever move on to the next major iteration.
  9. Thanks. Far more product options to decipher this build. Taking input from everywhere I can think of and then vet it all. Good to see intel has funded $2B to build a chip factory in Arizona; though we won't see the benefits for a couple of years. Still better than depending so heavy on offshore.
  10. Are the affinity products for PC optimized for either Intel or AMD? Or, for any particular GPU??
  11. Just came across this article, which I believe slightly addresses this conversation. If you go to Section 3, Hardware Acceleration on Windows, there is some interesting info: https://affinityspotlight.com/article/5-things-you-should-know-about-affinity-photo-19/?utm_medium=App&utm_source=AffinityPhoto_1.9.1035_Windows&utm_campaign=Welcome The other video above that section is VERY interesting! Astrophotography Stacking. Also, it refers to this page: https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Extras/hardwareAcceleration.html?title=Hardware acceleration (Now I just have to find out how to get that minimum Win10version ..... I'm on v.10.0.15063, but there doesn't appear to be a path for update and MS is finding my current version as up-to-date. Go figure; but then again, it's MS.
  12. Anyone had any experience with the Benq monitors? I see them mentioned quite often in articles on topics of graphics production of higher quality. (I'm having a difficult time justifying some of thier higher prices...) And, if you have experienced them, what graphics cards did you couple with them??
  13. I REALLY DO APPRECIATE all the aforementionments! So, to build a new workstation for graphic (and video) production from ground up, with priorities of color accuracy (on scale of 1 - 10, 10 being the best) rating of => 7 - 8, composition accuracy (=>8 rating), acceptable speed across the entire system; would like to hear your suggestions. CPU: (model, speed, whether any additional cooling is required) Memory: (model, amount, characteristics) Motherboard: (mfgr, model) Graphics card(s): (mfgr, model, how many needed with multiple monitors) Monitor(s): (mfgr, model, size, inputs required) Any other equipment beyond the workstation. Best coffee:
  14. I did find this article interesting: https://www.cnet.com/news/best-graphics-card-for-gamers-and-creatives/ (I know. It includes gamers as well. But we all should admit, there are far more gamer butts in chairs than creatives....)
  15. If I might: (a) Can you share what monitor(s) you are using with it; and (b), What are you using for color correction, either in the system or at the monitor(s)? Thanks.
  16. It's the first time for myself also. Not an edu OS version. I build all my own workstations; this one running a Gigabytes GA-AX370 motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 1600 6-core @ 3.2GHz, GeForce GTX 1050Ti and 32Gb RAM. It's starting to show its age, so if this roadblock in the OS is going to have legs, I might just start over in hdwr and OS. Hopefully, I can just solve this one (too much ego on my part). Yup, went through that page you mentioned, and all the links on it, and on and on and on. Rabbit hole. As for the OS enabling me to change status, that's where it all goes into the dark: There aren't any options on my settings pages that match those in the MS pages. Very odd. The OS is a full license and registered with MS, purchased through a well-known and reputable retailer; so I'm assuming it's legitimate. All I can see as a first option is to RESET the OS; or, rebuild (wipe & reinstall) the OS and all the applications. Thankfully, I run only the OS on the C-drive and all data goes to a separate drive and has two levels of backup for any and all forms of data. XAMPP/local webdev re-install will be the real bitch; always is. All I can think that may have caused it might have been any of a number of OS updates, in which case, history has shown success in removing them is questionable. One for the books. Thanks for your response.
  17. Time to start the planning for a new workstation. PC-based, Windows OS, probably 3 monitors, web development, graphics (Affinity Ph, Des, Pub; Elementor Pro, some video production). Looking for input from anyone who has experience with current graphics cards/accelerators. Good, bad, benefits, limitations, monitors partnered with, insights; anything you think relative. Thanks in advance.
