Yes, this is a much needed update.

Or you can use the Character Panel (menu “View → Studio → Character”) to change the text formatting if you don’t want to use Styles.
I know you said you’ve tried the “character tab” but the functionality is there, see red arrow on attached image and just press the highlighted button (it doesn’t look much like a button so that may be confusing).

I'm not entirely sure why they aren't there. I'm sure they used to be. I've just had a quick chat with dev and this should be easy to put right. I think they should be in the customise menu but not necessarily be enabled by default like they are in Designer. 

Just to make sure you know: though the buttons are missing from the Toolbar, the functions are available from the Arrange menu. That may help while you're waiting for Serif to provide the buttons.

You can create a custom brush category and move any of your most used brushes into this category. 
 
I've attached a screen recording of the Brushes tab in Affinity Photo, showing me adding a custom brush category and then moving brushes into this category.

Please make an auto-clean paint mixer brush button and/or give us a hotkey to clean the brush. We need better brush organization options and a brush history recording panel - or at least keep the brush we are using highlighted so we don't have to go through several brushes to relocate brush we were using. Tilt and flip shape option would be very helpful too. I am a digital hoarder when it comes to collecting brushes. I spent a week organizing half of the brushes I have because moving them around inside Affinity Photo stalled and crashed the program over and over.  Thanks for your attention to my request. I know y'all are probably working on this already.   Angela

The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in Help > About Affinity Designer).
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the Affinity Store software it will check for updates and offer any available update. The latest update will install over the top of any earlier version, with no need to uninstall. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "Download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Designer for Windows) can be downloaded from this link (that installer is NOT for Windows Store purchases and needs a product key).
If you’ve purchased from the Microsoft Store— Microsoft Store updates are done automatically by the operating system (each time you start the application). If this does not happen for you, open the Windows Store app and click the three dots in the top right corner of the app and then go to Downloads and Updates. Click Get Updates. This should hopefully force the update to show.

Alfred is quite correct. The Brush Dynamics can be used to control the rotation and direction
 
If you set Dynamics:Rotation  to Direction the brush nozzle will follow the direction of stroke. Set to 100% for full effect and/or adjust the value(%) for effect. Sometimes you can get a better result of the patterning (texture) by tweaking the slider or combining with rotation position in General:Rotation
 
Also consider the 'weight'/shape of the graph:
a. Set for slow build up ('concave' shape like easeIn or easeInSIne/Cubic) or linear
b. Rapid build up ('s-shape' easeInOut or easeOutSine)
 
Dynamics:Rotation:Random would however be more effective on these types of brushes

Hi Mike,
Your specifications should be fine. However what you mentioned about your fans getting load could point to your PC getting too hot. I recommend using the below link to check how hot your CPU is when the fans next run loud. If it is over 60-65 degrees I would recommend cleaning your computer with compressed air or taking it to a computer repair shop and having them do it for you as it might be clogged up with dust.

Both of these computers will be able to run Designer without any problems, personally I would go for the HP as it has a dedicated video card and this will not use up any system RAM.
