    Hi cadobir,

I recommend adding this as a future request, I have tested this with the pressure option on the pencil but it only apples a solid line.

    Petar_MK,

Before I always thought it was unnecessary because why not just use Apple's Preview? Preview is free and it does a decent job handling PDF files but recently I had to modify some lengthy PDF files and using the latest Preview was just horrible. Sure it is great that it is free but it isn't a production tool by any means so I can see how it would be useful to have an Affinity PDF app like Acrobat. Sure you can edit somethings in Designer but it isn't really made to edit PDF files the same way that Acrobat is (no long documents in Designer). I don't like Acrobat either but I don't have any choice. In my opinion, Acrobat went downhill from version 6 (version 6 had that "Do you want to make Acrobat your default PDF viewer" dialog box that you had to click every time, it was horrible). Plus I'd rather stay away from anything made by Adobe so I would gladly welcome a PDF creator/viewer from Affinity! One that is powerful enough to use in a production setting.

My motto is: "Less Adobe apps, more joy". BTW it is the same for Microsoft apps.  :)

Unfortunately, the Divide operation seems to be still somewhat buggy …  :(

But I must say, I would not use the Star Tool, but the Cog Tool for your purpose. That gives you much more control about the shape, and there is no need to superimpose other shapes and delete lines afterwards, since the single rays will be perfect little rectangles. Furthermore, division will work like a charm. Please have a look at my examples below.

Hope that makes sense …  :)

I feel I agree with RCR that using a line from the pen tool with power rotation is my preferred method for getting the result you described.  I like using the opposite lines as the most flexible.  The example I did was of a single line, using a circle as a guide for the inner point of the line and the rotation point.  Of course the caveat is that there is no right nor wrong method.  Experiment and see which one you prefer.

I still prefer the power duplicate method as the most flexible of those mentioned here. For one thing, while the Cog tool method is fine if you want the rays to be closed rectangular shapes, if you want them either to be unfilled curved or straight lines, or to be composed of some other closed shape, it is a no go.

Using power duplicate with opposing lines or shapes is fine if you want an even number of rays; otherwise it may require using an offset center point, a bit of simple math, & careful rotation of the first duplicate to get the desired result, something like this:

I would like to request this too. This happened in affinity designer today. I had a shape with very few nodes and I used the "subtract" function to remove a completely different part of the object. For some reason affinity "re-drew" the entire object and added several hundred/maybe thousands of unnecessary nodes. If It'd had a simplify-function I could have fixed it, but this time I had to backtrack several steps and undo loads of work that took time to redo. I've wanted a simplify-function several times before, but today I would have really needed it. The picture shows a screen shot of before and after the issue occurred.

I thought I would come back to this subject again because more and more I have seen the need for smoothing. I just can't understand why Affinity Designer does not have that ability. Other programs use it with great success. It is very useful when drawing freehand. It takes time to have to alway go back and correct a line. Please reconsider this. I think there are a lot of other people that would like to have the smoothing ability.

For drawing in an intuitive manner, the smooth tool is invaluable, it has been a deal breaker for a few people I know. if you draw a line using nodes and then can smooth it before fine adjustment it works really well, to not have that capability and to have to do each point individually...ouch!

I'm definitely missing my smooth tool from Illustrator right now.

I love the amount of control I have over the individual anchor points in Designer, but sometimes its very hard to get them exactly where they need be for a smooth shape!

Some sort of smoothing feature would be a great addition!

I like the divide boolean the best, because it gives you all your separate objects, and you can select, delete, or do whatever you want afterwards.  I find that for me, it is the most flexible way to go.
But that's just me.  Just experimenting.
There is a great tutorial on making a 3-D looking hole using divide in one of the earlier tutorials I highly recommend.

Is there a way to transform selections in this way in affinity designer?

    Thanks

I would like the ability to transform selections by pulling nodes to lengthen or shorten sides, enlarge or shrink entire selections, and warp selections. I use this functionality in Photoshop constantly. Affinity Photo is becoming a worthy competitor, but this functionality is missing.

I work a lot with line art, particularly calligraphy. The work is based around the use of 2-bit color, also known as bitmap mode (in Photoshop). This is required for a range of specialty printing, engraving, embossing, etc. Printers in these specialties WILL NOT ACCEPT art in any other form, except occasionally vector art. Conversion from hand-calligraphy or drawing on paper to vector art is very complicated, and depends on an intermediary step of bitmap conversion. Please include a bitmap mode to your color modes. Thank you.
