"Black and white line art is, in my opinion, more appropriately dealt with in Designer, not Photo." When the original artwork is pen or pencil on paper and the linear has to come directly from the original art and file size is a very important issue, 1-bit color in a photo app is critically important. Think of calligraphy, cartoons, and other applications. It may shock you to learn that there are still people who insist on working on paper, only to have their work digitized, but that is the reality.

I second the request for a feature to search and/or sort layers by name, type (pixel or adjustment), blend mode, etc. For my work it's critical.

cadobir got a reaction from JGD in View objects outside artboard.
When I’m working out variations on designs for clients, guides spanning artboards would help me keep my artwork aligned without having to duplicate the contents of an artboard and then alter them.
While we’re talking about artboards, the combination layers/artboards panel quickly gets cumbersome when I have three or more artboards in the works, as happens when I’m designing a media campaign. A separate palette for artboards might help clean things up and make the work go faster.

cadobir got a reaction from kazu san in Maximum/Mimimum filters?
I'm looking for filters in AP that serve the same function as Photoshop's Maximum and Minimum filters. (Photoshop:: Filter : Other : Maximum, e.g.) One way I use these filters is to refine selection masks by expanding the black or white area of the mask. This also works to thin or thicken lines in line art. I see that AP has Minimum Blur and Maximum Blur, but those are not the same thing. Does anyone know what I mean, and where to look for it if it exists in AP? Or perhaps whether it's an upcoming feature?

You should be kidding because no one works that way.
They are all used together and not for one specific purpose.
That should be Affinity's goal (and  it sort of appears to be going that way).
I've been in this business for 35 years. That's the way it's done.
That is the way professionals work.
No one relies on one app as being good for just photos or illustration or anything else.
You go from one to the other all the time.
    Solution is :
Affinity Designer should have a "no antialiasing" export option as Illustrator does.
Add bitmap mode to Photo and the problem is gone and you will get a lot more illustrators as customers.
Like I said: should have been there from day one.

The support would be needed in APhoto so AD and/or APub could make use of them. A photo editing application is what is adept at controlling the various conversion methods to 1-bit, not AD/APub. The latter two just needs to be able to use them properly, but APhoto would be needed to make ém.

People don't use Affinity Photo or Photoshop just to deal with photographs. Are you kidding or what?
Bitmap mode is used frequently for black and white line art because it reproduces sharper  as explained in that previous thread and for other uses.
People have asked for it from day one and nothing has happened in how many years, four or five?
The fact that it is not there, along with proper percentage scaling tools or even basic duo tone stuff,
suggest that this is destined to be a hobbyist program and not a true Photoshop replacement, unfortunately.

None of these things are difficult to implement and should have been there from the start.

I would like the ability to transform selections by pulling nodes to lengthen or shorten sides, enlarge or shrink entire selections, and warp selections. I use this functionality in Photoshop constantly. Affinity Photo is becoming a worthy competitor, but this functionality is missing.

I've tried some workarounds for Offset Path, and they are unsatisfactory - time-consuming, complicated, and inaccurate. I would really welcome an Offset Path function.

I recently did a job where, to fill an object with a pattern, I had to hand-assemble the pattern. And then, because the pattern needed to be warped to suggest a contour, I had to rasterize it, export to Photoshop and warp it there (Yes, AP might have done, but I was on deadline and I'm more used to Photoshop). And then, because I needed to be able to manipulate the pattern as vectors, I had to re-vectorize it in Image Vectorizer (which did a pretty lousy job). The whole thing took almost a day. Part of the time was spent in experimenting with drawing vector shapes to my own custom guidelines - a failure. Vector fill patterns, and even more, Vector Warp would have saved me hours and the client money. I hope this feature will be added soon. If not... I guess I'd have to go back to Illustrator, which I hate.

cadobir reacted to PaRunk in Create patterns from vector graphics in AD as in AI
    Hello Affinity Team,
i would very much like to have a way to create patterns from vectors, like in Adobe Illustrator, and be able to save them like a kind of fill colour.
In addition you can change the size, distances to the individual objects, as well as an offset and rotation or mirroring, which allows you to move the objects manually by input or to make an adjustment by overlays.
The currently very hidden function of pattern fills in AD, is limited by the functionality and the pattern templates must first be saved externally as png files and therefore not visible in AD.
It would be nice if a similar possibility as in AI could be added in Designer. Unfortunately, I can't include a sample video of how it works in Illustrator, because I have the current AI anymore and also the trial version from the usage time is already used up and I can't use it now.

I agree 100%. In fact I have bought the package, and it’s quite useful.
However, the point about the skimpy basic transform operations goes back to at least 2017. There have been inquiries from paying customers all the way through, because these are BASIC tools for a vector design application, going all the way back to Fontographer, the grandmother of Aldus/Macromedia/Adobe Freehand (RIP). I was a beta tester in the late 1980s for Freehand, and Fontographer before that!
But yes. Please support innovative small developers.
But developers, communication is the key... What UP!?!
    Thanks!

I can't believe we are still waiting for basic warping tools not to mention (dare we dream) an envelope tool and autotrace. It's clear the Affinity team spread themselves too thin launching Publisher before finishing the basic feature set in Designer.

    Skew tool is pretty monodimensional.
No vertical skew? No Distort, Warp, Mesh distort? These are all fundamental. This discussion goes back to 2017, for crying out loud.
What is going on with this???
    This is a painter’s app, apparently, not a designer’s.
But even a painter would use a ‘perspective’ warp/distort to adjust elements in the initial sketch.
I sure hope there’s some action happening on these very foundational, very fundamental, essential transforms.

"Free vector perspective" and "Free vector extrusion" is a MUST for many professional users.
Without this function, the program can only be used by artists.
I work as a technical illustrator and would be happy to bury CorelDraw and Illustrator.
Just like Affinity Photo has replaced Photoshop.
But unfortunately this is NOT possible without these functions.
I'm looking forward to future updates and uninstall the actual designer demo again...  : - (((

It would have saved a lot of grief if if designer was released with a very very basic Warp/distort capability back in 2014 - with the build up to every new beta I'm always optimistic - but again, no mention and total silence from the moderators - it would make a great Christmas present though - maybe we'll see a download link to a new 1.9 updated beta on Christmas day with a great Warp/distort tool
