  1. I'm also looking for an ePub option. I write manuals for products and usually use MS Word. I'm currently setting up a template in Publisher, but would prefer to have some interactive elements in the document. I have used iBooks before because of its interactive features, but iBooks Author was abandoned years ago. There are some interactive features in Apple Pages ePub offering, so I may use that instead of Publisher this time around. The machine has a 24 inch touchscreen, hence why I would like to make the manual interactive. The gallery feature and embedded video features of Apple Pages ePub documents are ideal for step-by-step instructions and overviews of the product. What's missing is the zoomable annotated image feature of iBooks, but I can make do without that.

That's awesome, Chris! How do you like using Spoonflower? I have considered submitting some of my own patterned designs over to them.

Thanks Trent. So far no sales, but I am new and still building a small portfolio of designs. The next step is to work out the best way to market the designs to people who make products out of fabric, architects and interior designers.

  3. I thought I'd take Affinity Designer's amazing new spiral tool for a spin in a recent Spoonflower competition. Spoonflower is a print-on-demand service for anyone who wants to buy printed fabrics and wallpaper. These spirals incorporate Pantone Peach Fuzz and Peach Blossom. Peach Fuzz is the 2024 Colour of the Year.

The image above was rendered in Cheetah 3D. The remaining images are Spoonflower mockups.

These patterns can be bought printed on demand; not just on fabric and wallpaper, but also as ready-made duvet covers, pillow cases, table cloths and napkins. https://www.spoonflower.com/en/collections/796023-spirals-by-geometrical_design?productType=FABRIC

I'll be adding more spiral patterns to this collection over the months to come.

    Hi Chris,

I'm not able to reproduce this issue, are you on the latest version of Designer? (1.10.5)

Would it be possible to export one of your Assets with the issue (using the small 3 line burger menu in the Asset Panel) and sending it to us here: https://www.dropbox.com/request/SSXvhr4ZS6bC3uTg5uHf

    Lee

    Hi Lee

I've exported something from the Assets hamburger menu. It's hard to tell what is being exported, so you may have all my assets! Thanks for looking into it.

I am using AD 1.10.5 on Mac OS Catalina V 10.15.7, Late 2012 iMac 27"

    Cheers

    Chris

  5. Exporting to Keynote would be really useful. Every now and then I try to import vector files into Keynote, but with no success. I know there is an Illustrator plugin for this, but I don't have Illustrator. Being able to export from Illustrator into Keynote, or at least to cut and paste from Designer to Keynote, means that I can apply Keynote's animation tools to the imported vector lines and shapes. It also streamlines slide production.

  6. In Affinity Designer, you can use Symbols to create editable seamless patterns. You can have many instances of the same symbol laid out however you like (brick pattern, half-drop,etc). Anything you add to an instance, modify, or delete from within an instance of the symbol is immediately reflected in every other instance of the symbol. Basically you can watch the entire pattern change in real-time while making changes to one instance of a symbol.

Here is an example of using Symbols to creating a border pattern. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rpyz31gnizqke3o/C02 L02 Symbols NZ HB.mp4?dl=0

  7. I know a number of people have asked for an arc tool over the years, but so far it hasn't appeared in Affinity Designer. It's an essential tool for drawing geometric patterns, e.g. Islamic geometric patterns, along with gothic tracery, arches, etc. Here is a video to show the functionality of the arc tool.

    Functionality:

    • Snap the centre of the arc to any point on a line or curve, the end of a line, or intersection of lines/curves
    • Snap the circumference to a line, the end of a line, or intersection of lines/curves
    • by selecting the end point of an arc, extend the arc
    • snap tangent to curves
    • using the arc tool, draw a complete circle

  8. I was asked to reproduce a geometric quilt pattern in Affinity Designer by someone who wasn’t sure where to start.

This tutorial is 1 hour and 20 minutes long. It says it’s longer, but that’s because I forgot to delete some clips at the end. I’ll get round to fixing that later.

The pattern is made up of pentagons and pentagrams, and consequently correlates well with the golden ratio.

If you are having problems with creating geometric patterns in Affinity a Designer, this tutorial explains how some of these problems come about, and how best to resolve (well - work with) them.

Here is the link to the tutorial on Vimeo.

  9. It took a while to make Tabs work in Affinity Designer. Perhaps it's a better way of doing it, but it's so different to what I am used to. It would be nice to have the option of setting all distances from the left-edge as well as what is the default of setting the distance of the current tab from the previous tab.

I am mocking up an existing client's form so I can edit it as required for documentation purposes. The text needs to be black and the leader needs to be grey. The leader needs to be thinner than Affinity's default tab leader.

How can I modify the line weight and colour of the Tab Stop Leaders?

  10. Designed to help you create balanced asymmetric designs and patterns, the third class in the Golden Ratio series has just been released on Skillshare.

With an Affinity Designer file and examples included with the class, you can get up to speed with the golden ratio and learn how easy it is to introduce a sense of harmony and cohesion to your work; no matter how simple or complex.

    examples-grids.thumb.jpg.a64b1656e3c2a9df9e0190c7b0c71751.jpg

Learning to apply the golden ratio to your work couldn’t be easier. The class is 33 minutes in duration and an Affinity Designer template file is included.

To make the creation of these patterns easy, we will be exploring Affinity Designer’s Donut and Pie tools. We will also play around with the Cog tool; one of Affinity Designer's parametric shapes.

    golden-ratio-10.thumb.jpg.8606158f9fce4fa66f02042186ce638c.jpg

The cog tool is so versatile, you’ll be wondering why you haven’t been using it.

    So Now There are Three

Want to know more about how you can make the most of the golden ratio, check out all three classes:

Asymmetrical Drawing & Lettering with the Golden Ratio skl.sh/2JZ4h2Y

Create a Vintage Style Logo from Concentric Circles and the Golden Ratio skl.sh/2P7B08J

Concentric Radial Patterns & Infographics with the Golden Ratio skl.sh/2D0QUPx

Note: All three classes feature Affinity Designer.

  11. My latest class on designing a vintage style logo with concentric circles and the golden ratio is now on Skillshare. All the examples presented in this class were drawn in Affinity Designer.

For the first two days, this class will be free or until the class reaches 20 students whichever comes first. You may need to set yourself up with a free Skillshare account in order to see all the lessons.
