To be honest I showed you exactly what you showed me. Plus the crop tool is cropping to what you selected. I don’t think you guys are posting in the right thread.

Crop to Selection. The Crop to Selection command crops the image to the boundary of the selection by removing any strips at the edges whose contents are all completely unselected. Areas which are partially selected (for example, by feathering) are not cropped.
The best thing I can do for you guys is link this post that clearly breaks it down.
He even states affinity Photo is a nondestructive based workflow application. He also breaks down ways to still achieve what you are looking for. Please try these method and see if they are helpful. If not then you might have to stick with the software you are currently using to crop to selection. As always I try to help where I can, and I hope you ultimately find a way to use affinity.serif.com product in its entirely with no issues.

    Hi oO5Dynasty,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
It's on Designer's roadmap (Convert Pixel selection to Vector shape). At this point i don't know if this will also be ported/added to Affinity Photo.

My brother's started to get in to painting bike frames and I thought it would be nice to create some templates that would show potential designs in a slightly more realistic way.  Often it's just a flat drawing which doesn't give you quite the idea of what it would look like all finished and shiny.
So here's the first two I've done, road/track frames with fairly random default paint applied. The highlights and shadows are blend modes so will work with any colours. They're not extremely detailed but enough to give you a better idea.

It's all about the non-destructive cropping feature in Affinity Photo.

If you use the crop tool, it does not remove the parts outside the crop, so at any time later in the process, no matter what new layers you add and so forth, you can retrieve the "cropped" areas by either increasing the canvas size, or going Document > Unclip canvas.

If you want to be include certain areas, as you suggest, you can crop, then change your mind simply by adjusting the canvas size. You can do that at any time afterwards. It requires a slightly different way of working but it is always there, always editable. Non-destructive.

As far as I am aware, if you crop to selection, you can't do that? Therefore it is destructive, at least in comparison to the proper Affinity crop tool.

I'm also rather curious about what happens with crop to selection on multi layered documents ?

OK, that second image can be done using a macro uploaded earlier in this thread - just use the selection brush to make a small selection top-left and bottom-right on the image where you want the crop to occur (screenshot attached) then run the macro (I have attached another copy of the macro to this post).
The first example I had not seen before so I may have a play with that one later this week.

Do you have an example of what that would look like before and after the crop as it sounds like that has already been covered in other macros?

    Hi rob kay,
I have removed my previous answer because it didn't provide more info than the tutorial on Vimeo.
There may be easier ways to accomplish that, depending on the complexity of the photo/object and the background itself (if it's solid white or variations of it). A sample image would help us see what you're after.

Of course. For example, to remove extra white borders from data plots. I created a simple macro in Photoshop that does this: select by color (black) > expand selection by some px > crop.
I honestly don't know how to achieve that in AP.

Sometimes one simply wants or even needs it more destructive and really get rid of parts – without loosing any other option, e.g. layers... Therefore:

Nice videotutorial, but that has nothing to do with "crop to selection".

It might be me being miserable for a change but watching someone click around a screen and then have it sped up doesn't do anything for me. You learn nothing from it and it's not interesting so I always think why bother and skip them (although I did watch most of this, then had to skip to the end). If it is something like a drawing/painting either digital or natural then that can be an OK watch depending on the end result but something like this would be better as a tutorial.

Here’s a little experiment I’ve been playing around with lately.
Mostly done in Designer, with a little help from Photo.
It’s not exactly how I imagined it was going to be at the start but I’m reasonably pleased with it.
Useful suggestions and comments are welcome.
If I get some good suggestions for improvements I might make an updated version.
P.S. The ‘ratings’ on the cards are not meant to be any kind of critical review of the software. I just had to use different ‘scores’ to make it look a little bit more interesting.
P.P.S. Kept getting a -200 error on upload so I had to upload a fairly low-res version.

Yo be honest it’s a feature a lot of us would like to see implemented. Hopefully it gets implemented and if it doesn’t then their is nothing we can do about it. For me crop to selection is apart of my workflow in every project. It’s just how I like to work and I would like to see it implemented.

That would be great, but I'm not seeing how to do that. When I am inside the grid, moving the cursor moves the entire grid. Outside the grid, the cursor defaults to the rotate cursor. So, I'm only seeing these two options at the moment. Being able to draw out a custom crop grid would (I think) basically solve the issue that so many people have been commenting on. Is there something you are doing that might not be obvious to the first time user? Thanks!
