I still don't get it. At all. Alpha's in AP have been a complete mystery to me since day one.
In PS you can edit  alphas just like any other layer and it's as simple as it sounds.
in AP there are all kinds of edit and visibility buttons that either appear to do nothing or do what you least expect them to, and menu options that I simply, try as I might, do not understand. At all.
I've tonight resorted to simply saving a separate black and white image out and calling that my alpha. Does the job. Totally not what you want for a game engine, but I don't need that any more, I just need a black and white image, and don't really mind that it's not embedded as an alpha...
... although that would be very nice!

Morning, Am I missing something here, or can I not snap slices to the grid?!
I have created a slice, turned snap to grid on, and now am trying to conform that slice to the grid, but it's no snappy.
Pretty much all snap options are on, but I just can't snap it!
    Cheers

SLowmo75 got a reaction from randomjames in Default Foreground Background colours
Hi chaps, came here a few days ago to find out, so thanks Scungio for the pointer. Seem to remember trying to sort this out about a year ago and for some reason it seemed less possible then... however, sorted now, so all good.
I felt I had to pop back and add my two penneth worth though, with a few stern words to the devs...
Basically, Mr and Mrs Affinitys, to leave this basic and very expected shortcut combination out of AF is a major oversight and, more than anything, causes unnecessary confusion and frustration to your users, especially new ones. I've been with you since day one, and am a complete evangelist for all Affinity products, but I am determined to go Adobe free (haven't used Ps or Il in many years) and have much more staying power than many other users - seemingly small omissions like D for default colours and X for swap colours will quickly turn new users away from Photo, despite the ability to 'fix' them by setting up your shortcuts as we have.
I'm curious as to why these shortcuts have been left out? Was it literally an oversight that didn't seem to matter, or are there, perhaps, legal reasons for not putting them in as default?
Would love an answer from devs on this if possible?
Just to push the point home, here's a run down of the frustration new users will face - I got all the way to the end, but how many new users will actually get this far before running back to Adobe with their tails between their legs???....

    1. Doing a mask, dum de dum
    2. Press D  (0.1 seconds)
    3. Nothing
    4. Set black and white colours manually (4 seconds)
    5. Need swap colour
    6. Press X (0.1 seconds)
    7. Nothing
    8. click colour swap on Colour panel (1 Second)
    9. Continue working 'the AP way' (30 minute)
    10. Decide this is pants and there must be a better way
    11. Fiddle with keyboard shortcuts, don't really know where to look (6 minutes)
    12. Go to the Affinity Forum, can't really find much about it (25 minutes)
    13. Become a regular visitor to the Affinity Forum, dedicated enough to the Affnity products to keep looking out often for new features etc. (Couple of years)
    14. Realise that it is possible after all after finding this thread! (8 minutes)
    15. Make appropriate changes to Keyboard Shortcuts (5 minutes)
    16. Realise how much valuable time you have wasted sorting out something that really...no. really. ... should've been there all along. (3 minutes after step 15.)
    17. Go back to the forum and write an overly long and extravagently terse post hoping that the devs will notice and at least give an answer as to the omission,
at best, make the shortcuts default from install. (About 28 minutes now)
    18. Get TF back to work! (in about 20 seconds once I click post!)

    Thanks

Hmmm.... this is interesting... we approached another company that made specific controllers for photo-editing software a while ago and nothing came of it, maybe we could do something ourselves to enable MIDI controllers instead?... We'll have a chat in the office about it when we get a minute - thank you! :)

This is the one thing that stops me using Affinity Photo for everyday use. My workflow with Lightroom controlled by the Native Instruments Maschine is so fast and intuitive that I can't leave their horrid pricing structure. Ironically Adobe didn't even invent it.

Please add MIDI compatibility (like MIDI2LR).
    It's a killer feature.

SLowmo75 got a reaction from IsabelAracama in slice tool snap to grid?
    Sorry, that stood for...

    Well, That's Frustrating!

I'm in a ridiculously impossible situation trying to figure out something that should've taken a few minutes.
Picture the scene...large image, needs cutting into a 4 x 4 grid, of specific pixel sizes.
    Easy? Well...

    1. Make the slices out of box shapes, then select the shapes and tell that size to be slices?
No, because the slice insists on exporting the shape itself, whether it's hidden or not, so I can't 'slice' the image with a shape.

    2. Draw the slices over the box shapes, snapping along the way?
No, because the slice tool doesn't snap to geometry.

    3. Just make the slices with the slice tool on the grid, no need for box shapes?
No, because the slices don't snap to the grid?!

So, slices are useless to me.

    I now need to..
    1. Make the box shapes
    2. Put every box into a group
    3. Hide each box within each group
    4. Export each box group individually, with 'including background' selected in export options

Is this really the easiest workflow to split an image?
Without Slices being able to snap to grid, this seems the 'easiest' way right now.

    Thanks

SLowmo75 got a reaction from anon1 in Put the icons onto the adjustment layers?
All the adjustment layers have cool and colourful icons to help you easily read which adjustment you would like to make, and what it does...

Yet when you apply this adjustment layer to the image, you get the same, boring white box, every time. Worsely (!), you don't know what they are or what they do!....

...and you have to open the group up and read the WORDS to see what adjustments you have....

Is there a really, really good reason that we can't have these pretty, colourful icons also displayed in the layers palette? I think it would be nice, and helpful, and, ultimately, less annoying, which is related to helpful, but the direct opposite of it.

    Thanks for listening.

Affinity has already committed to fixing this behaviour. They just don't have the time while working on Photo. The current workaround to Convert to Curves is not acceptable as a professional tool. You should be able to mask and work with Mask, Contents and BOTH independantly as I can in any other design program. I'll rather wait until they fix this.

SLowmo75 reacted to brandbrilliance in Moving a masked image within a vector mask
I find this limitation quite severe. I use vector masking in almost every single design to crop images. Having to unmask an image to move them independently is kind of a deal breaker for me. You should be able to click on the image and move that around and then click on the mask and move that around. Then you can still click on the layer (the composite of the two) and move them both around. Illustrator uses the "mask" and "content" buttons to allow you to move each one individually.

I'd suggest you put this on the Feature List immediately. This feature will be requested by almost every designer out there. Especially since you can use vector masks to mask parts of your design (not just images) and then without the ability to edit/move them independently, it's going to become a real pain to edit large designs.

    Please fix this thanks.

+1, yes please. Must have. I'm sure you'll put it in soon, and thank you in advance for that, but for now, I'm going to sound a bit shirty, for which I apologise, also in advance!... But, think of it like this - who are 'you' to tell 'us' what aspect ratio we need our images at???!
Looking awesome though - you're true trailblazers!!

oh, and PS. I was looking forward to giving the beta a good look tonight, whilst editing some stuff, but am now going to have to go back to Pixelmator because I need to do a load of cropping and, guess what?... the size I need to crop to isn't on the list!
