Cedge got a reaction from SrPx in Learn or Hire?
A couple of considerations come to mind here. What value do you place on your available working time, as an entrepreneur. At one point in my working career, I charged $75.00 usd for mine. A 150 hour investment of time was equal to $11,250.00 usd in billables. Those were some fun times on the net. Depending on your time value and normal work load, you might not be able to justify making learning AP and AD a priority. A free lancer just might be the best economical approach, at least until you have leisure time to attack things Affinity. Watching the videos is a super aid to learning, but nothing replaces seat time, in front of the screen, for mastering the tools and having the time to absorb the lessons from many multiple sessions. It tends to be measured in many hundreds of hours before all the new guy patina wears off. Having a Ps background will certainly accelerate things, but I'm doubtful 150 hours is close to a realistic estimate. Bottom line... never let making a dime stand in the way of making a dollar.

Cedge reacted to toltec in Light behind the object
As firstdefence says.
This is a very crude example just to demonstrate
Cut out and place the subject above the base image, then add a Live Filter Point light to the base image and adjust it how you want.

got a link instead, or try closing your browser and opening again or try a different browser.
I would have thought the easiest way would be to copy the guy onto another layer by cutting him out and then placing the light source on the layer below, and behind him?

Well I'm glad this debate has been settled, the Vector brush and pencil get a node slider in the next beta release maybe called a Roughener, Unsmoother, Naturaliser, Crinkler, Add Nodes, The Wiggler or The Nodeinator.
I think @owenr should put his handbag down & @R C-R agree to disagree, then kiss and go and have make up sex lol!

Cedge reacted to Pedro Soares in Why does the Displace filter rough up layer edges? (Affinity Photo)
Hi briandrum, welcome to the Forum!
Did you use a black and white copy of your image with a slightly Gaussian Bur filter applied to it as your displacement map?
I find this to be the best approach with the best results.
I can give a look at your file if you provide it.

Try using the Arrange menu to move layers when all else fails

Cedge reacted to TonyJ in Scarab temple in progress. AP painting DAUB brushes
Going quite well. What do you think? Personally I get on with the brush engine. Would like a colour picker, ( floating colour wheel) but never mind.
Got about half way with this scene up to now.

Cedge reacted to v_kyr in question on lighting filter
Didn't checked that initial statement, but if it is always reproducible for you that one light setting always influences/changes another one, then you should fill in a bug report, or make a feature request for being able to set up multiple independently ones of these.

Ricecrispies
Try Filters > Distort > Mirror. It takes a little experimentation but it will do what you need. It isn't obvious, but you can drag the image on screen for even more control over the finished product.

That is absolutely astounding! Ten tons of work, you say? It looks more like a hundred tons!!

Cedge reacted to VectorVonDoom in Jaguar E-Type Lightweight (AD)
I've been working on this for a few months and is the most complicated drawing I've done so far. I had thought about doing it before but knew it would be a ton of work, in reality it was about 10 tons, seemed never ending.
I decided to just do the front half to better show off the engine but I could re-use much of it if I ever wanted to do the whole car. As before it's just the pen tool, gradients, blurs and blend modes, so anyone could do it.
Hope you like.
As usual click to open, then click to display full size (although the actual output's a lot, lot larger).

Cedge reacted to R C-R in Macro and Filters
Filters like the Clarity one allow you to set a pixel radius value. Consequently, the effect will vary depending on the pixel dimensions of the layer the filter is applied to, not because the radius in the macro actually changes but because visually the result will be much more apparent when the radius is large relative to the image dimensions than when it is small.
For filters like Clarity & several others, you can set the macro to expose one or more filter parameters to the user at run time using the "Settings" icon as described in the Macro Panel help topic, & demonstrated in the Affinity Photo - Macros video (beginning at about the 3:15 mark).
