jmwellborn reacted to toltec in Creating a white border around the image?
I'm not 100% sure what is going wrong for you.
First of all, you must Ctrl + click on the layer thumbnail, which I guess is Cmd + click on a Mac.
Alignment Outside (or Alignment Centre) will only work if the layer is smaller than the canvas. Remember that the OP wanted to place a border around 'floating' images. It won't work if there is no space to fit it.
So, using the 'floating' layer for the deer (floating on a transparent canvas) press Cmd + click on the layer thumbnail to get a selection (as shown).

You can then use the Outline Selection (Outside) to make a  selection border all round  the deer image (say 50 pixels)

Click apply, then you can fill the outline with colour. Edit > Fill.

You will have to press Cmd + D to deselect afterwards.
As I said, Outline will only work for images where there is space on the canvas to apply the border.
Hope that explains it better ?

I agree with you, APub should get something like global levels.
But they are not as important as you want us to believe. And your tone of voice is pretty absolutistic. Unfortunately, you are not the only one in this forum who considers his wish to be the most important of all.
We should not throw out the child with the water bath (German proverb). The global levels should only be an additional functionality and not replace the current level concept. In reality, the layers in InDesign can't do much. I am very happy that the layer concept of APub works the same way as in AD and AP. I can do things with APub layers that I can only dream of in InDesign.
Just as you accuse @walt.farrell of not designing long documents (which is probably true), I can assume that you have less to do with creative design. Otherwise you would appreciate the current layer concept in APub more.

    Hi AlanPC,
Well I'm old (74 in fact) but that doesn't stop me finding how to do similar things in different programmes.  You have suggested that you might well stick with Word and set your line spacing to 'No Spacing' and that you generally only output a few pages of PDF.  Walt has suggested a way which gives you total control over everything in a a paragraph style, but maybe you want to try something a little simpler first.
If you start by drawing out a text box, then you can move the mouse pointer  up to this point on  the selection bar and you will see the mouse hint 'Paragraph Leading' appear.
If you click on this down arrow, you can then set the paragraph leading to the same height (in points) that your text height is and then your text will have no gaps between lines (equivalent to Word's No Spacing).  However, hitting 'Enter' will give you a gap between paragraphs equivalent to the height of your text characters, and if you want to change that, you will have to use the controls in the Paragraph Panel to adjust that.  It really is worth spending a few minutes experimenting with the Paragraph Panel to achieve exactly the output you require as in my example below which I use a lot in Family Trees, which can be up to 50 pages long!
Good luck - I know I won't be going back to Word (or in my case the free Libre Office) when I want the complete control over the output that Affinity Publisher gives me [and remember this is still in Beta so further improvements are very likely

    Indeed
In fact I was lucky enough to learn to type on a Canon "word processor", which had a little blue LCD screen so you could see about 6 lines of text. You could (slowly) scroll up and down and when happy, hit "print".
When that wasn't working, or someone else was using it, which was frequent, i'd use a manual machine, which hard a hard return bar. There was none of this "hold some key down and the bar does something different" stuff; you either hit that thing and made a space, or you didn't.
The greatest thing I hate and despise about Wordpress is that "Oh, you hit return? BLOING! Here's a HUUGE space!"
Sorry but I'm too old to change where this is concerned. I hit return, I want ONE space. I don't want 1.5 or 1.25 or 2.25 or anything except 1.0. If I wanted 1.5 spaces I'd hit it the return key 1.5 times...

Here is a landscape panorama photo of Yellowstone National Park. This was made from 7 RAW images (hand held) all stitched together in Affinity Photo. I must say that AP did a fantastic job of stitching these together! I then made a number of adjustments in the Affinity Developer. I need to get my monitor color calibrated because I can't really tell when I develop them, if they actually look good. Nonetheless, below is the panorama.

    Hi geomdavey,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
I'm assuming you want to paste in the same or another document in Affinity apps. If that's the case check if the layer from where you are trying to copy the selection is identified as an Image layer (look at the label between parenthesis after there layer's name in the Layers panel). If that's the case right-click on it in the Layers panel and select Rasterise. You can then paste just the selection you have copied.
Image layers are a special layer type that retains all the original image data - you can think of them as embedded images. They are created when you use the Place Image Tool (in Affinity Designer only), the File ▸ Place command or when you simply drag them from the Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) to the canvas of an opened document. They can be transformed globally (rotated, skewed etc) without losing quality but they cannot be edited/manipulated at a pixel level. For that they must be rasterised first. To do it right-click on them in the Layers panel as explained above and select Rasterise. They are then converted to a Pixel layer type (as you are used to from other programs) which you can then manipulate at a pixel level and copy/paste to another layer's.

such is even easier accessible in German and Arabic: there you can just write a text without any vocals, but it remains understandable. Whereby Arabic is used to it every day (unlike German): there it is very common not to write any vocals at all (which would only occure as tiny strokes above consonants).
Things to do: audible margin alignment ... ?
[ or slim optical alignment: without the need for "e" as in https://archive.org/details/Gadsby/page/n17 ]

Hi and thanks for the comments.
I have been a delighted Affinity user from the day it came into the UK market (and GIMP previously). Really object to being manipulated by Messrs Adobe & Co. into this 'yearly license' malarkey, so however good their products may be ... I'll find some alternative, thanks. Would think of myself as a semi-professional photographer with several years experience and as mentioned, cannot believe how good AP really is. So ... if they want to take their time to fine tune their product range before looking into providing us with a DAM facility, I'll be more than happy to wait and will probably look into it (with the intention to purchase) when they do so.
Bought Luminar 3, another remarkable piece of software, which in several areas seems to be ahead of AP (in my opinion) AND it comes with a rather workable DAM. So, after a few weeks of extensive trials and tests, will be using them both. AP for its superlative range of editing facilities and Luminar 3 for its sophisticated Tone Mapping and DAM facilities. Paid £44 for it ... which is a rather pedestrian evening out. Would be nice to have it all closely integrated but can live with it not being so ...
Once again, thanks for your assistance gents.

Only a few words about this great piece of software:
    - I tried to install IndesignCC on a low end PC with a tiny Intel Celeron with Win 7... Doesn't work!
    - Affinity Publisher (beta) on the same computer: Works very well.
So, you know what is the one I'll use...
Of course Apub doesn't have all the features PageX9 has but it's a great soft as well.

    My 2 cents.

It is not my job to make things "better", I try to make things clearer.
In the Christmas newsletter email it would appear, which I have replicated here. The Newsletter email is sent directly to most customers whereas this is a support forum not really a marketing tool where we expect customers to read everything we post. Do not come here to learn everything about Serif. We did not previously directly inform the delay here in the forums, though anyone following the Affinity Publisher forum discussions closely can see we are still suggesting more is being added before release, as with Designer and Photo, which need to be released first or simultaneously as has been explained. We do not pre-announce release dates anywhere, not for product launch or point updates. We try to manage expectations and will give estimates, but have not hit them, sorry.

You don’t make anything better with that saying. But on the contrary.
It is about here in the forum, where everyone thought you would get the news and excuse if something would delay! Not somewhere on another marketing thingy like your website where it is hidden. What you think is not what loyal customers think that are waiting for the correct launch (information) since years. If you don’t want to tell us delays and excuses here, tell us (why).

You could argue that Affinity Publisher is already "available", but that is perhaps playing semantics with English.
To be honest we did plan (for much of last year) to launch Affinity Publisher last year and every time the Customer service team and Tech support team repeated that, we thought it would happen. There are a number of genuine reasons why we did not, sorry, but as Head of QA and Tech Support I honestly think that the whole Affinity range will benefit from this short delay.
For example in front of me I have an internal only build of Affinity Publisher that treats Master page frames as many customers are demanding for where their position, style and text flow relationship is independent of the text they contain. This major potential change has consequences to the whole range but will lead to Affinity Publisher being more useful to a wider audience on launch.

    Hi MarkkuP,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
You can download the latest Affinity Designer Customer Beta for Mac from here and Affinity Photo Customer Beta from here. Remember to keep the respective Mac App Store versions installed since they are required to validate the Betas. Also make sure you have not renamed or moved them from the root of the Application folder otherwise the Beta will not find them.
