Text tool very unresponsive in v. 133
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
It seems that the problem occurs when trying to place the text tool cursor next to the left text frame border. Particularly if it is near the link triangle -
Guess I need to get my head(s) examined. Or given the award for Dunce of the Month. What, may I ask myself, are sliders for??? After thrashing about for 4 hours yesterday with the leading, text flow, and text wrap problems in my document, I should have taken a walk with the dog first. Of COURSE the rest of the icons are there in the Customize Desktop option. In fact, almost all of the icons. My v. 133 downloaded with a very blankish desktop, versus v. 128 which was so beautifully arrayed. Here is what 133 looks like as it downloaded. When I opened the document, a few of the icons materialized, but several did not. Live and learn. (Hopefully) on my MAC Sierra Retina display.

Text tool very unresponsive in v. 133
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Thank you, I will. To quote Scarlet o’Hara, tomorrow is another day. -
I originally entered this problem under Suggestions, but am now having crashes with v. 133. I have described the problem and attached the evidence in the Suggestions Forum, under the topic Text Wrap icons missing from Context Toolbar. But now it appears there is a bug. I have had the same problem several times, and hope you can figure out what is going on. It is entirely beyond me, but there seems to be a font-handling problem for starters, n uncorrectable leading problem from one page to the next, a text flow problem, and a text wrap problem. Rather discouraging. I have re-attached the document I was working on. I have no idea how the text from the left-hand page, set in 11 pt type, managed to repeat itself at the top of the right hand page in tiny type, with the left-right justification reduced to a portion of the page. This has happened before, when trying to flow text. No idea why the leading is correct on the left page, and squished up on the right. Anyway, I am not so dopey that I hadn't saved the document in decent shape before I tried to correct the leading. Maybe the only bright thing I've done this weekend! Thank you!!!!

Well, here is a fun mess for the developers. I have been trying to adjust text wraps around the two pictures at the bottom of the right hand page, and to adjust the leading on the right hand page to match Goudy Old Style, Regular, 11 pts, justified. It worked on the left hand page, and although all the text was ok on the right side, the leading was too tight and could not be adjusted. Now after giving up on the leading and working for a while on trying to rewrap the text around the two pictures at the bottom -- Bingo! There comes the tiny type which was at the bottom of page 6, now superimposed at the top of page 7. This has to be a COCKROACH, not just any old bug.

I am on MAC Sierra, v. 10.12.6. The stuff you are showing does not come up on my version of v. 133 AT ALL. I have tried that Customize Toolbar stuff. There are no wrap icons. When I click on the Customize option, every single available option is shown; No scrolling possible. The only option is "Close." My tools preferences are set the way you show them. I will try fiddling with that and see what I can do. Thank you.

type and leading
jmwellborn replied to Roger terry's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I am having some leading problems too with imported PDFs, converted to afpubs. When I cut and paste some text, it doesn't always paste in with the leading the way it was before Cut. It seems to be erratic. Usually if I highlight the entire thing, fiddle around with the leading arrows, then click on the leading to match the point size of the type, it adjusts pretty well, but this is strange. Also, if I click on the space between a demand line return before the start a new paragraph, it is not possible (or I haven't a clue) to reduce the leading between the two lines. I am probably clueless, because Publisher is so grand. But if not, could we have a little leading help? -
connecting text boxes
jmwellborn replied to Roger terry's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I did this same thing. My text is 11 pt. Clicked on the text flow icon, drew a new text frame for the next document page, and the overflow text came in at 3 points for two lines. Also the left-right margins of the two lines of 3 pt. text were much more narrow (but justified) than the balance of the text which came in at 11 points and justified to the entire left-right margins of the text frame. -
New wrinkle in v. 133. I am having a difficult time with the Text tool. I place a text frame, start typing, then decide to add an image. Change to the Frame tool or the Picture tool, place the image, then want to go back to entering text. Change to the Text tool, click into the Text frame. Nothing. Particularly if the new text is to start at the left margin of the text block. Up to the black pointer tool, click on that, then down to the Text tool, click on that. Sometimes it then permits text to be entered. Sometimes I have to go through the whole thing at least once more. Didn't have this problem with v. 128 or V. 57. (didn't download v. 58).

What has happened to the icons for the Text Wrap panel which were in the Context Toolbar? They were up there for v. 57, v. 128, and now with v. 133 they have vanished. I know one can reach them by using Studio>Text Wrap, but when creating a multi-page document with many images, it is a major nuisance to have to click on Studio each time one wants to wrap text around something, or else have that large panel on the desktop. Also, is it possible to allow nudging the wrap settings? L-R, T-B are only allowing 10 point increments. This doesn't work very well with all of us working in picas (the dreaded picas!).

Import iCalamus-files
jmwellborn replied to cubitus's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I take it all back. An iCalamus file converted to PDF will import just like a top into Publisher. But don't try to print it. There must be an awful lot of hidden quirks and wrinkles embedded into the original iCalamus software that create massive problems in trying to print the file, particularly if there are lots of illustrations. Missing text, missing photos, botched justification, scrambled font sizes, and gummed up leading. I spent 4 hours yesterday on an 8-page iCalamus document. Convert to PDF, import into Publisher, save as afpub file. Open, and then laboriously copy one small section at a time from the saved file, and paste it into a brand new Publisher file. At that point, adjust all of the strange short lines, oddly justified other lines, type that can range from 3 pts to 11 pts (in a single paragraph) when it was all supposed to be 11 pts, messed up leading, etc. Rather than "the asp" (as in Cleopatra's chosen instrument) I gave it up. Will try to print my final version today. It would have been easier to type the whole thing from scratch!! LOVE PUBLISHER! -
Master pages are not applied
jmwellborn replied to gordo's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Well it does happen to me. Mac, with Sierra. If you create facing document pages and set margins, and then create master pages for the same document, setting different margins, they will not apply to the document pages. I have tried dragging the master page spread thumbnail over a document spread. Nothing. I have tried using the dialog boxes Apply Master Pages. Nothing. The only way this seems to work is to delete all document pages, set the master pages, then add document pages to the project. I haven’t tried doing all that and then changing the margins on the master pages to see if they change on the document pages, but spent a fruitless hour today struggling with this. -
Apply Styles – Options behave strangely
jmwellborn replied to A_B_C's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Make that two of us!! I think there needs to be a ver'r'r'r'r'ry slow-moving video about this whole styles thing as one of the first, when the commercial version is ready!!! -
Import iCalamus-files
jmwellborn replied to cubitus's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I have a few of those. Just export them from iCalamus to PDF, then import PDF into Publisher. You can then edit them and save as afpub files. -
Bet you love it! And don't give up because you can't find out just exactly what you want to do at first blush! Publisher is actually quite sophisticated, and there are an enormous number of goodies hiding behind some rather innocent looking icons on your desktop. Also, you might try setting your desktop to the lighter version -- if even temporarily. I have found that it is far easier to figure out where everything is when the background is a much lighter gray rather than the darker interface. Go up top left to "Affinity Publisher Beta," click on that and then on Preferences. You will get a box with a bunch of options and above them is a very little box probably saying "Tools" with an arrow beside it. Click on the arrow, and scroll down to User Interface. You can then adjust the sliders to achieve the level of grayness you wish.

Affinity Publisher Tutorials
jmwellborn replied to 10157's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
You Affinities are the best of all possible real people!! So helpful, so polite, and so responsive. Not 1 millionth of a percent like the jolly types who answer the phone with "Hello, my name is John (usually it is John) and how can I help you?" Unfortunately John is actually some other name such as Marcos or Sirhan, and he is a) from the Philippines or India, is b) a contract employee, and c) hasn't got a clue but suggests that if you will just pay up front about $90.00 "our technical support staff can help you." That is after waiting on Hold for about 3/4 of an hour. I have created a scroungy interim Publisher Help table of contents, with all of the temporary solutions found on these forums that apply to questions I may have. And the new Beta 128 is gorgeous!!! Smooth as silk! Once the first commercial Publisher version is available, I know that you will have a Help section that is as thorough and clearly understandable as the one for Photo. (Don't use Designer, because I am as artistic as a gnat/midge.). Thank you for everything so far!!! -
But there are a whole BIG BUNCH of us who very much want to be able to edit a pdf. We are extremely grateful for this wonderful feature in Publisher. Why don’t you just print your pdf’s straight from Preview (if you are on a Mac) and then close the documents? But please don’t ask the Affinities to take away this wonderful option from the rest of us!

jmwellborn replied to Miltrin's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Thank you so much for your information!!! I did not upgrade to the Beta 58. I read some comments about crashes before happily clicking on the download, and have saved v. 57. That seems to be why I could open his files with all of the master page information right there where it belonged. We haven't heard from Miltrin so far, and I do hope that he is working on his project again!! In some ways, I am a computer-dolt. But I have been reading these forums and creating my own HELP pages, by printing conversations about problems I may also encounter with their temporary work-around solutions. Do you have a good suggestion for me about how to send these crash conversations to the developers? Although I think they may already be aware of this problem. -

Here it is, stripped down to not very much. I may have wiped you out. Anyway, here is hoping. Fingers crossed! (Probably eyes as well.) fast casual-4.afpub. fastcasual-4.afpub
