Although I have set my Preferences>Tools to picas (versus points) when I open a PDF file which was originally created using picas, the ruler shows points. I have to manually go to the Document setup and change the measurement in order to reset the rulers. Is this normal? I am using v. 139 with the test download of v. 140.

I didn't mean that my vertical ruler is missing. It is there. Both rulers are where they should be. I meant that the indicator(s) on the vertical ruler to show where a guide or guides is(are) located is(are) missing. Your screen shots from 2 hours ago are what the rulers should look like. Mine do not. Tried several times. I have had all of these View>Show options that you indicate above already checked before I started this experiment. Stumped.

Guides Manager doesn't do a thing about showing location of guides on the vertical ruler. Just makes binoculars optional. I am using the grayed out desktop, versus the black one. Horizontal ruler is fine with guides. Vertical is missing in action. I wonder whether the Affinities could consider a "Show Guides on Pasteboard/Desktop/Artboard" (whatever they name it) option which we could choose, or unclick?

[Implemented] Document Units - Picas
jmwellborn replied to ERZ's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
No. "Enable snapping" is not checked. But "Icon and text" do have checkmarks beside the little arrow and magnet icons in the toolbar. -
And in the utter dolt department we have -- drum roll please -- me. At least part of the time. Clicking on the zoom tool, and then a guide, shows a marker on the ruler - sometimes. At least it did for me on the vertical ruler. On the horizontal ruler, no. But the guides definitely do not carry over from the document window across the desktop to the rulers. Oh well. Can't have everything. LOVE PUBLISHER!!

Ah ha!!! Just fiddled around with 400% magnification and dragging guides, and have discovered that the picas are actually broken into extremely small units. But just try settling on 12 picas. You get 11.p.10.4472. 24 picas is 23.p.10/7172. Etc. What???? Hel'l'l'l'l'l'l'll'p!!!! -
I am trying out the new pica measurements, and have found something which I may not have noticed in v. 133, but cannot go back to, because this new download (v. 139) wiped out v. 133. When I drag a guide from either the horizontal or vertical ruler, it places the guide, as it should, on the document window. Unfortunately either I haven't a clue about how to make those guides carry over to the rulers on the desktop, or that has changed. The guide stops at the edge of the document window, so that I cannot tell where, precisely, it is located on the pica ruler. Since -- currently -- the pica measurements are so tiny -- and they show up in increments of 2 picas each, this is making layout a pretty dodgy affair. I am about to invest in a set of binoculars. I also described the pica ruler difficulties under the topic, Picas.

Thank you SO MUCH for the picas!!!!! But unless I am a blithering idiot, we still need a little help here. Unless one views at about 400% magnification, the rulers show picas in strange increments (i.e. 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24). For example, 12 picas are followed by three tiny little bars (which apparently represent 12p6, 13p and 13p6, and then by a taller bar that actually represents 14 picas. To be really useful, we need each pica in 3 segments (12p, 12p3, 12p6, 12p9, 13p, 13p3, 13p6, 13p9) etc. Each set of 4 increments of a single pica needs to be separated by a taller bar on the ruler. Otherwise we are going to be working with our noses about 3 inches from the computer screen. I am also going to add a new topic in the Suggestions section about rulers and Guide. Even so, I am so very happy about the picas, and am sure there must be thousands of others who will be too. Thank you again!!!! -
Inserting Page numbers
jmwellborn replied to Roy Stedall-Humphryes's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Oh THERE is the problem. One places page number 1 on the left side of the master pages spread (which is actually going to be page 2) then Alt-drags over to the right side (which is actually going to be page 3) and inserts Text>Insert>next page number which becomes page 2. Then in the document pages the first, single right hand page becomes 1, and the first spread becomes 2-3. At least it did once. Clear as a bell. Ding-dong-bell. This flounder has been thoroughly confused by the sea nymphs hourly ringing (her) knell. (The Tempest.) -

I am now a flattened flounder. I still cannot get pagination to work correctly from a master spread sheet to a document starting with a right-hand page and then continuing with subsequent left-right spreads. Maybe I am just an old goat. The tutorial shows a master spread, starting with page 2, and then alt-dragging that text box over to the right where the numbering automatically continues. Even if I try by not numbering page 1 (single right-hand page) the following spreads are numbered incorrectly i.e. 2-4, 4-6, 6-8 instead of 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, etc. So it is back to the drawing boards, or maybe I need to change my fish food or hay. (goats don’t eat hay.) -

They are working on so many things right now. Old adage: Patience is a virtue. Modern variant. Virtue is its own reward. -

I think you are having the same problem I have been experiencing. I have watched the video several times, and still cannot quite figure out how to get page number 2 to show up on a master page spread where it belongs. The video shows it being placed on the left side of the spread. How the demonstrator then gets 1 to show up on the right I cannot figure out. I have tried the Option+drag operation several times, and fail. I have, so far, resorted to making a master page spread and saving it as a template, with little text blocks where I will then insert new text blocks and page numbers on document pages. Eventually I am bound to figure out how this works. I rather wish that we could have place names (such as LN and RN) to go on master pages, and then the option of “start numbering with...” or something similar with the document pages. Then again, we probably already do. Still, Publisher is already first rate in my book. -

Nothing sad about this at all. The developers have already responded to our many requests about picas and have announced (see above) that this measurement option will be included in the next public Publisher beta. In my book they are CHAMPIONS at responding to input from potential users. I cannot think of any other entity (business, professions, government) that has been this genuinely attuned to its target population as the Affinity developers. Nor, I might add, as courteous and as helpful. As for me, I am not a potential user. I am lined up and ready to be first in line to purchase this addition to their Affinity group, if humanly possible. -

Using Publisher for My Next Book
jmwellborn replied to Jared Nielsen's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Aw, Fixx. He must have typed “Designer” by accident. He started this topic and explicitly wrote “Using Publisher for My Next Book.” Good for him!!! Although I do hope he does a lot of Save As steps along the way during the beta. I love Publisher already, and have previously written several 400+ page books using InDesign and Pagemaker. It will only get better, and I think it is pretty darned good already. Got my checkbook out and poised to purchase!! -
Crashes using leading and text wrap
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Wrote about this under the topic Type and Leading. It looks to me as though the problem stems from hidden glitches in the original Dtp Software iCalamus, which I used briefly when Adobe would not honor my $600.00 purchase of InDesign CS6 when I upgraded from Yosemite to Sierra. No problems using PDFs from InDesign and Apple Pages. So far. -
type and leading
jmwellborn replied to Roger terry's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
The PDF I imported on 9/22 was created from a document originated using iCalamus. I then saved it as an afpub document. Apparently some pretty strange stuff came along with it, including pages that would print photos and only partial text, leading which was fine on some pages and fouled up on others, some lines in 3 pt type and others in 11 pt type, wierd margins and many lines that refused to justify entirely, or which became extremely short lines stretched out to the entire text frame. Today I worked with several documents originated in InDesign and Apple Pages and converted to PDF. They all imported into Publisher as smoothly as possible. One - developed for children — included all kinds of type faces, wiggly lines, clip art, and every strange type face in my computer (Tiger teeth, Quake, that sort of thing). Every one eas perfect, converted to afpub, and could then be edited. My conclusion is that the problem lies with hidden glitches in iCalamus, and most definitely not with Publisher. Whew!!!
