Text wrapping not working

Thank you so much! I was beginning to think that I had lost my mind. All brain cells present and accounted for after all. -
Copy and paste images from clipboard
jmwellborn replied to ekweb's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I opened a jpg directly from my MAC picture files to the clipboard and then resized it and dragged it from the clipboard into an open Publisher file, and then tried Text Wrap. The text wrapped, but not to the dimensions I wanted. But the image was there, movable and resizable. I didn't try dragging it from the clipboard into an open picture frame. Guess I should have tried it. Long day. -

Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Great idea in theory, but it didn't work. Edit>Defaults>Revert was entered. The file was saved. The file was reopened. There is the click mark on Ignore Text Wraps. Just the way it is when I open a new file. Hopefully the Affinities will be able to figure this one out. Perhaps my version of 140 is just sick of Peter Piper and the pickled peppers. -
Text wrapping not working

Or here is an idea! How about a little brain in the software which understands that when one clicks on the Show Text Wrap Settings (in the toolbar) that one wants to have Ignore Text Wraps unchecked in the Text Frame panel. That way, one could then just adjust the wrap settings for the chosen wraps selection and they would show up in the document. Voilà!!! -
Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I just began a new file. Created a text frame. Checked the Text Frame Studio. Ignore Text Wrap is checked. Even though I left it unchecked when I saved the .afpub fiddling file. So the default position -- at least in the MAC version of v. 140, appears to be the checked position. Meaning that each time one creates a new file and plans to use an image, one has to go in and uncheck this box. Never too old to learn new things. -

Tightening the kerning didn't work. What I had to do was to change the text wrap margins. So here is the test document, post-fiddling. Thank you again. more fiddling.afpub -
Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Thanks everybody. I am using MAC and have followed Old Bruce's video. I was using the Text Wrap instructions contained in the Affinity Publisher Help section, which unfortunately doesn't state that you have to click on the frame first, then open the Text Frame studio, unclick the Ignore Text Wrap box, then click on the picture frame then click on the Text Wrap icons. The Help entry says to click on the Picture frame and proceed. Nothing about Ignore Text Wrap. I created a new file, entered some new text, then entered two images. Went through the prescribed procedure. The wrap feature worked well. I saved the file, closed it, and opened it again. Entered a third image. II was pretty disappointing to discover that although I followed the prescribed steps, the third image threw the text off. I am attaching both (lousy pictures, per iPhone). So I have some suggestions. 1) Be sure to clarify this procedure when the commercial version comes out with an upgraded Help section. 2). Provide us with an option to a default position of Ignore Text Wrap if that is essential to wrapping text (for those of us who work with very large numbers of illustrations in a single file so that we don't have to go through so many click this, then click that, then click this, and then click thats. 3). Help me figure out why the third image won't wrap correctly using the same procedure as the first two. Sorry to be such a pest. Hopefully I am the only idiot out there. Just to prove it, I attached the photos in the wrong order. Sigh. -

Today I minimized Publisher several times and opened Safari. No crashes. Then minimized Safari and back to Publisher. No crashes. -
Instability on Mojave?
jmwellborn replied to blw's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I am on Sierra but am having the same problem every so often with trying to get the text tool to appear in a text frame. Especially maddening is to create a new document, place a text frame across an entire page, then set the empty text frame to a 2-column format, and then select the text tool, click inside the first column and — nothing. Back and forth between the text tool and the move tool. Still nothing. If I create a single text frame, click inside it, and create some text and THEN change the format to 2 columns, I can continue to type. Going barmy. -
Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Not related to InDesign. Nor to PDF in this case. The document with the text wrap problem (fiddling around .afpub) was created as a new document in Publisher v. 140. I am using a MAC, OS Sierra. And I am confused by the entry from iaing. I am trying to wrap text around an image. Not have the text (such as it was — full of typos and silly words) appear below the image. I am sticking with my comments of 5 hours ago. I think this is apparently a MAC- related interface problem. -
Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I have tried anotherInDesign document exported as a PDF and imported into Publisher and saved as an .afpub. Same thing happens. As long as the document is set up using points, text wrap works. But if the .afpub document setup is changed to picas, text wrap goes wildly wrong. I am pretty sure this is an interface problem (picas/points). -

No problem! By the time I get text wrap sorted out I am going to be the wreck of my former self -- not matter who or what! -

Text wrapping not working
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Checked or unchecked, it doesn't make any difference. I have since discovered that a PDF imported in Publisher and saved as an .afpub file in points measurements wraps text perfectly around a picture frame which I have experimentally added. But if I change the document setup from points to picas, and then try to wrap text using pica wrap settings, it wraps it alright, but almost 3/4ths the way across the page. For example, instead of a 2 pica right margin it is more like 25 picas. I then tried going back to the "fiddling around" document, and changed its settings to points from picas. Then tried text wrap. Nothing. -

here is the file where this is happening. fiddling around.afpub -
I have created a test document to try various things, and have discovered that the text wrap function is either not working properly or I am not. Here is an iPhoto of what I am trying to do. I have tried several times . And nothing. In case you would like the . afpub file I will send it below.

The text tool is still rather unresponsive. Using v. 139 I have recently done a very large cut and paste job, involving cutting several lines of text from one part of a document and then going back a few pages in the same document and trying to paste them in. That part worked. But when I returned to the page from which the text was cut and tried to resume work, I could not get the text tool to work by clicking in the text frame. Sometimes it took two or three toggles between the Move tool and the Text tool before I could get it started again. I started a new document yesterday using pica measurements and created a text frame, then set it for 2 columns with a 1 pica gutter. Worked. But when I tried to use the text tool by clicking inside the first column the frames just disappeared, leaving a blank page. When I clicked on the page again, the 2-column frames reappeared. Back and forth. But there was no way I could make the text tool work. Never could use the document setup. There is either something I don’t have a clue about, or something is not working the way it should. By the way, when I created a different new document, made a single text frame on a page with a 6-pica left margin and a 4-pica right margin, then entered some text, and THEN changed the layout to two columns separated by a 1 pica gutter, I got just that. Two columns 20 picas wide each, separated by 1 pica gutter added to 10 picas L-R margin = 51 picas. The correct measurement for 8-1/2 by 11” paper. And I was able to continue placing text. (although the text tool was still erratic, as described above) Hope this helps?

Crashes using leading and text wrap
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Thank you so much for your reply. If it happens with any PDF that I import from an original InDesign document, or from an Apples Pages document exported as a PDF, I will get back to you. I think it was a very peculiar set of circumstances with who-knows-what hidden within the original ICalamus file. That software was rather unreliable, and very prone to crashes -- especially when working around text wrapping, picture frames, etc. The PDF was exported from iCalamus and then imported into Publisher, where I saved it as an .afpub file. I then opened that file and tried to print it. The first six pages printed perfectly but on the seventh page (with the girl's face shown in my Sept. 22 message), much of the type was missing. So then I tried to link text blocks in order to sort out the missing text. That is when the font size became snarled up. Type size on pp 1-6 was 11 pt. The first few lines linked from p. 6 and brought into p. 7 came in at 3 pt. Several pages later in the former PDF (saved as .afpub) there are several pages with many images and captions. The images printed, but most of the captions were missing. Definitely not a Publisher problem! I tried a page with several images/captions on it from a document originated in InDesign and exported as a PDF, then opened in Publisher. Printed perfectly. Same thing for an Apples Pages document. Fortunately I have only one very small ICalamus mini-book. It isn't going to bother me to reset the whole thing in Publisher, once we get to the first commercial product. It will be fun! If I haven't nailed text wrap, fonts, leading, picture frames, and styles by then, there will be no hope!! As an aside, I have imported a PDF with 300 pages of wildly varying type, clip art, illustrations, shadows, and all sorts of unusual layout which was originally created in InDesign. Came through as clean as a whistle. I have also redone several pages that illustrate each of the 320+ font faces that I have resident in my Mac, using Publisher v. 139/140. Some at 12 pt, some 14 pt, some 16 pt, some 24 pt, etc. -- depending upon their unique characteristics. One has followed the next in alphabetical order with nary a glitch!!! (Glyphs show up in the Glyph Browser too.). I am as happy as a clam. -

Thank you. I will do it tomorrow morning. -
For what it is worth, Zapf Dingbats don't open for me either as a font type, although one can find a few using the Glyph browser. Bodoni Ornaments work like a charm. Also Type Embellishments.

Crashing while in the Background

Had it happen today too. I minimized Affinity Publisher (v. 139 with test download v. 140) with an open document, previously Saved As in APub. Then I opened Safari v. 12.0 (12606.2.11) to check one of your tutorials. Publisher crashed, and unfortunately I didn't keep the Apple crash report. But I did get an immediate option to reopen Publisher. Which I did. It functioned perfectly after it was reopened.
