    Hi @Mark Oehlschlager,

I think this is a limitation due to the fact that the Affinity Photo Persona is not activated yet. A mask layer that you create via the button at the bottom of the layers panel is a pixel layer. But there are no pixel tools in APub available at the moment. This will most likely change once APh is available with its pixel tools.

What does work is vector masks. But they are created as vector objects/layers and you can e.g. place a rectangle above an image, right click on it and select 'Mask to Below'.

    Hope that explains something :)

I guess I am a total idiot, but where is "Mask to Below?"    Here is what happens when I put a rectangle on top of an image, and right click.971708096_ScreenShot2018-12-02at2_35_05PM.thumb.png.0e944904110acc266a3f441eb858573d.png

You can download the current 1.7 betas of Photo and Designer from the beta section of the forum and import and try the brushes yourself. This also gives you the opportunity to also try some of the new features being added to the 1.7 versions.

"Ask a silly question and get a . . . ."       OF COURSE, the brushes and assets import  seamlessly into v. 1.7 Designer.    Just downloaded Designer beta.   Everything came in perfectly, was deposited in vector and pixel departments, and is working just as it should.    Whew!   Thank you!!!

    YEs, I thought so.

I am not planning to use it for production but for a private project - still you can imagine that fear of losing data is always there.

Just hope the final is out soon.

Just keep saving your private project as an .afpub file, but be sure to export it as a PDF too.    That way, you will have something to fall back on if the .afpub file has problems opening when the commercial Publisher arrives.      Meanwhile, there is nothing like working with it to learn to really love Publisher!

  4. This is undoubtedly a very stupid question, but having owned Photo for the past two years and having just purchased Designer and the lovely DAUB Watercolors and Washes and the  Smoke and Cloud brushes, and downloaded several lovely brushes and assets from the Resources forum, I have been wondering whether they are going to be compatible with the new 1.7 versions of AP/AD when the arrive and which will be integral with the first commercial Publisher?   Probably a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, but I have been reading in the Resources forum about the trial vegetation brushes for v. 7 which got me thinking.    Will I be up the creek without a paddle?

  5. Just updated v. 174 to the new v. 192.  Smooth as can be -- as usual.   Opened my first "Recent" Publisher document.    Mon Dieu!!!!    The pica rulers (which many of us use) have those beautiful 1 pica increments -- each with a 0p3, op6, and op9 marker that we have been hoping for.    No more squinting and guessing, trying to sneak through 2-pica increments.   Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!  The Affinity developers are the BEST.

Have you tried doing the starting up with the control key held down to clear the user settings?

No.  No need to.   We have our answer in another section on this topic in these forums.    We have to use the zoom tool and click inside a single-page document window to get them.   Pretty simple, actually.

The scroll bars depend on the document zoom and also the option you have set int he mac general preferences . This has always been the case with the app and is not new to these versions. This is currently working as expected

Thank you.   With the MAC general preferences set at ALWAYS I have now found that the workaround is to open a single page document, hit Z and then with the zoom tool click into the document window.   The window gets a bit larger (which is most assuredly not a problem when looking at 11 pt type!) and the scroll bars magically appear.   Then it is onward and upward with your beautiful Publisher!     Thank you again.   So glad that I am the dolt, and that Publisher is the brains behind my operation.

Here on Mac I can set guides only with the Move tool (the arrow). Neither Text tool will let me drag a guide off of the rulers.

I have a MAC 27” retina display with Sierra OS.   I cannot set Guides using the move tool.   Just tried it again with a new document in Publisher v. 174.   Only the text tool works to set guides for me.

    Hi @sgraphic

    Welcome to the Affinity forum.

This very much depends on where in the world we would be shipping the book to. If you are in the EU then the order would be shipped from within the EU. If you are outside the EU, it could come from within the EU or the US, depending on where exactly it is going.

I live in the US.  I purchased Designer and the workbook from the Affinity Store on November 22.   The elegant workbook arrived in the mail on Monday, the 26th.   Beautifully shrink-wrapped and packaged and in tip-top condition.  I am astounded at the speed!!!!!!!

Not sure either...  basically just diagonal lines so that is probably as good a guess as any unless Serif wants to chip in with what it was actually intended to represent.

Set beside the Photo and Designer icons, the poor Publisher icon looks a wee bit dull, dubious, and dreary.    Rather like the forgotten stepchild in the creative world.    Never mind.   All three apps are brilliant!

  11. I have just spent some time with Apple technical support.   We now have the definitive answer.   Which is disappointing, but an answer.    There is nothing amiss with my Apple Preferences.   But this scroll bar thing is also not a bug.   Apparently it is a design choice that these scroll bars won't show up in any of the three Affinity apps unless one magnifies the screen or -- in Publisher's case -- if one adds more than one blank page to a document, whether needed or not.   This may be fine for design and photography work, where magnification to a particular spot is desired, but when entering text on a single page it is a pain in the neck to have to toggle between the hand tool and the text tool to head up and down in order to add or delete a word or phrase, or to decide precisely where to place an image with text wrap.    Writing books and creating designs are so different.    Apple also suggested (and what I have previously asked) that I might ask that an option be provided in the VIEW menu for Show Scroll Bars which could then keep them on, no matter what the zoom size of a single page.

Sorry to be such a pain!

  12. Well, here I am in the Bugs section.   I have tried in two other areas of these forums (Publisher suggestions, and in the general customer comments) and have been told that I am just confused.   But now with evidence from the most recent postings in the Suggestions section, I have apparently found a bug.    My scroll bars have disappeared entirely from Photo and Designer (never were there in Designer) and have vanished from Publisher v. 174 unless I add multiple pages in the Pages panel, whether I want them or not.   A single page document refuses to include scroll bars.    Can I be the only person who had this happen?

I am on the Mac. This is how it looks on my machine. If it doesn’t look the same on yours, that must be a bug. :/

That is exactly the way the Affinity Preference on my MAC is set.    "Immer” is “Always.”   And Always has been set as Always from the end of August, when I downloaded the first Publisher beta.   I now have v. 174 downloaded separately from v. 162.   Also the commercial versions of Photo and Publisher.   I have been sure from the start that it is a bug, and have been saddened that I cannot find a cure,   Thank you so much  for your video!!!!    It proves exactly what I have been posting.

  14. Nope.    But I am glad to hear that it works for you.    It used to work for me too.  Are you on  MAC or Windows?     In another area of these forums I was kindly advised that I was confused.  The only  thing that changed from the days when I had scroll bars was that I purchased and installed Affinity Designer three days ago.   The scroll bars disappeared from all three apps.   But I am sure that they must be intended, because all three apps include “scroll bars” in their HELP sections.   So discouraging.

I know you are absolutely right.  And both of your responses are most helpful to me for gaining a better perspective.  I guess I just am having a hard time with the idea that Publisher won't be like PPX9.  Thanks so much for your feedback.

If you will spend some time with Publisher I will bet that you will learn to love it.   It is in Beta, but when it is ready for purchase, I predict it will hit the world like a rocket.   As for me, I bought Affinity Designer three days ago, fiddled around with it and made a Christmas card design this afternoon, saved it, exported it as a .jpeg image, imported the image into Affinity Photo, fiddled some more and cropped it, saved it as an .afphoto image, and tomorrow it will be opened in Affinity Publisher for the text.    Smoooooooth.     And I have the design skills of a flea.   They just thought of everything I might want to do and made it possible.

How very British of you lmao! The Americans fought the War of Independence to throw off the shackles of English thinking and now they lead the world, including in the creative software industry.

I've poked a few people here for their filter bubble, parish pump thinking, but I have made many more substantial points which still stand.

I mean seriously, if this community was less concerned about manners and more concerned about strategy, there might actually be some intellectual rigour brought to this thread rather than emotively put cognitive bias.

You, sir, are apparently spending too much time at the keyboard, and far too little contemplating the tone of your remarks.     You are surely making other Americans, such as I, cringe with embarrassment.

  17. Thought it might be a plan to include this here in the Publisher suggestions portion of the forums, because it is possibly more applicable to this App versus Photo and Designer.    I have been thrashing about with missing scroll bars, and find it exceedingly fiddly to have to go from a working tool (i.e. Text or the Hand Tool) to move a document up or down.   When writing with the text tool and then placing and text wrapping images, sometimes one wants to move up or down a bit -- if even on a single-paged document -- to decide where to place or move something, or to add a word or phrase.     It would be so nice to be able to check or uncheck Show Scroll Bars in the VIEW menu, just the way we can show Frame Text Rulers, etc.     Could this be possible?   I gather the only other way one can have them right now is to simply add a bunch of blank pages in the Pages Panel,  whether needed or not.

Anyway, truly impressed and thankful for Photo (22 months ago), Publisher Beta (since August) and Designer (two days ago).    Such elegant creations!!
