OMG, guys... you could have told me in the first place...

I don't know why I did not check out PagePlus first. Maybe because it will get no updates anymore. . . . . .

The good thing is I no more have to explain Serif staff how I want the picture frame to behave - just that I want an "behave like PagePlus"-option.

Since you have announced over and over again in various parts of these forums that you do not plan to use Publisher, would it be too much to ask why you are continuing to post questions about how to use it?    It seems that you might be  wasting a lot of other people’s time.    Just a thought.

Are you talking about File > Edit in Designer, or using the Designer Persona button? The former worked in .192 on Windows.

(Note: Unless the Mac Designer beta is different from Windows in this regard, there's a trap built into File > Edit in Designer. It's a one-way street, as there is no File > Edit in Publisher available in Designer beta.)

When I was working with v. 192 I had not yet purchased Designer.   So when I clicked on "Edit in Designer" I was politely informed that it wasn't in the cards.    Now that I have both a working Designer, plus the beta for Designer, and click on the "Edit in Designer" in v. 206 of Publisher, it trots me over to Designer v. 1.7.0.3 where my Publisher document is ready to fiddle with.    Doesn't matter.  It is STILL a lovely surprise.

Hey I just wanna share a quick story of how I finished  and printed 120 pages company catalogue inside Affinity Publisher Beta! [Yeah I'm crazy sometimes:23_stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:]
If Publisher devs would be interested I can provide three source files so they could use them for future bug squashing.
So let's start with the background - I started working for the company 1.5 yer ago as a marketing departament employee and my main focus was to gather new clients, but soon they discovered that I can quickly edit PDF files, tweak colors in photos and draw vectors - I used my personal copies of Photo and Designer for that. Later I officially become one and only company graphic.

Finally I got biggest project in my life: I had to make company catalogue - three bilingual versions Polish/English, German/English, Russian/ English with up to date content, products and photos. I had only compressed PDF file of the previous catalog project that I edited few times in Designer, but it was only for web use. When I was starting out the Publisher Beta wasn't even out yet. So I took the PDF to designer and started from converting Project to 400DPI CMYK, then replaced all photos with CMYK tiffs that I made with Photo Batch Work feature. Then I discovered that blacks should be changed to 100%K - huge pain in the a** because text boxes were bilingual and used two text colors. It took ages. Also Designer Artboards are cool but changing page order is a pain. And don't even get me started on page numbering : )

While I was working like crazy I got email with a link to Publisher Beta - this changed everything. It was early beta so I didn't trusted the software and I was right because it crashed like crazy - as beta should right? I got an idea that I would use publisher for page numbering process and place Affinity Designer pages with "Place Image" feature. Do we all remember bug with linked files that were really embedded? Catalogue made in designer with full resolution images took about 2GB of disk space, imagine that I use this file on 120 pages as placed image with different artboard chosen - My 16GB RAM MacBook Pro looked like that :58_disappointed_relieved: every time I opened the files, it grew to to about 60-80 gigabytes and hang my machine after few minutes. Beta got few updates - and then there was the feature where it could convert Artboard to a Spread - kudos to developers for that. I had a file that was usable, software with every update was more stable.

From that time I mainly used Publisher and Designer/Photo as a support. I continued the project, when finally I got to the point where I could add missing content, photos, drawings. So I started working on it, I was so absorbed with photos and text , that I had no time to draw our products. At the time we were looking for apprentice, we recruited a girl with an 2018 iPad and Apple Pencil. I bought her a copy of Designer iPad - she never used a software before but after few days and with my support she draw  first product - it looked great so I told her: listen I like how you draw this products could you draw the missing ones? She agreed. Affinity file format is cool, we were exchanging files back and forth with almost no issue (except fonts but we found a workaround).

Finally after almost three months of tweaking, changes, discussions and working sometimes 12-16 hours per day I exported pages and a cover and  uploaded onto print company server. It passed verification process, but until I saw the physical copies I was nervous and kinda afraid :56_anguished: because if something would be messed up it would be my fault no matter what.
Everything was printed properly and it looks good to my eye. Ufff
Final digital product Polish/English (without cover) can be accessed here: click

I can tell that I found my passion and built some kind of career based only on Serif's products: I bought Photo, Designer, Designer iPad and two Workbooks, I would definitely buy Publisher minutes after it hits the Mac AppStore. Thank you for producing such a great software. The work is so fluent and so enjoyable inside your apps - keep working. I wish everyone at Serif Happy New Year! Keep improving great products.

Bugs I encountered in the process:

    • Embeded/linked files even when linked are embeded
    • Copied vectors from Publisher are pasted as rasterized pixels in Photo/Designer
    • Export bugs - elements linked via Affinity Designer Artboards aren't exported properly
    • Replace all crashed the app
    • Moving single page in facing pages document = crash
    • Removing  one page in facing pages document = crash
    • After many hours app become sluggish - closing the document does the job
    • App cache in library sometimes exceeds 20GB

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. I would reply in my free time.

It could have been a case of "Never Volunteer."   Instead, it was "Always Persevere," and you have an extraordinarily elegant first catalog.   Well done!!!!

I think the easiest way would be to place guides on the master page to achieve an asymmetrical layout. I mean a vertical guide where the text frames left border is supposed to be located.

    d.

Am I looking at the same thing?   Is SirPL trying to create a document with facing pages for duplex printing?    If so, here is how I set up my master pages, and the margins hold for every document page.    No need to use guides and then draw text frames.    Possibly I don't understand, because  otherwise, if SirPL wants each page to have the exact same layout as his example shows, wouldn't it be easiest to have a single Master Page, and then just add pages in his document as single pages, not facing pages?   Anyway, here are shots of what I do.

    Cropping!

Ok, I will make a video of a software that does it right...

Why are you bothering with the Affinity software at all?    If all you want is photo albums and you have something that works for you already, why not just stick with it?   Seems like an enormous fuss over something with a simple solution.   (Just to throw my oar in.   Unasked, I might add.)

    Hi jmwellborn

I'm glad you managed to solve the issue, it's a shame you no longer have the original files as it would have been good to try and track down the cause. It could have just been a one off of something you may have not noticed you'd done at some point, but If you come across this again please feel free to let us know

    Cheers

Thank you!  The strangest thing was that the imported .afphoto file was used to replace a jpeg which had come in with the original PDF, which had then been saved as an .afpub file.   Somehow, when I opened the saved .afpub file, removed the existing (ungrouped) jpeg and placed the .afphoto, it managed to group itself with the two text frames on the page, rasterized the whole thing, and then would not permit any editing.  Or any changes.  Nor could I create a text frame outside of the entire grouped affair.    Or on the workspace.  I hope it was a one-time issue.    Anyway, I think Publisher is grand!

I saw this comic and wondered if you know Randal (or does he know you?) You get the weirdest problems.

Actually, I do seem to manage to get into all sorts of muddles — all related to imported PDF’s!   But since my several 300-500 page books have all been stored as PDF’s, waiting for Publisher so I can revise them, sometimes I am a wee bit not-quite-laughing when I have to manually link the text frame on every page.    All the same, Publisher is wonderful.

  8. So I solved it.   Rather.   I went back to the original PDF, opened it in Publisher, saved it as an .afpub file, then laboriously linked 66 pages of text frames together -- again.  Page by page.   And then I saved it as an experimental .afpub file.    I then went into Photo, and exported each freshly revised .afphoto image as a .jpeg.   Back into the .afpub file, and placed each new  .jpeg where the old image had been.   Worked.    Saved several times in the process.    Then I permanently trashed the offending .afpub and PDF files.

Whatever caused the problem, I  no longer have it, because the files are gone.

But that has not helped this problem at all.   I have opened other documents which I created in Publisher, and don't seem to have the pixellation problem.   It is also not evident on other pages in the offending .afpub document.    So somehow or other, the .afphoto image must have gummed up the .afpub page.     HELP!!!

  10. Just a quick note as 2018 comes to a close to say thank you for everybody who has been so helpful in these Forums.   Most of all to the wonderful developers and staff at Affinity who have been so unfailingly gracious in answering our questions, responding to our pleas for help, and accepting our suggestions  - in my case, most especially the lovely new Publisher.    With Photo, Designer, and Publisher in our futures, how can 2019 be anything but a Very Happy New Year!!

    Hi,

I guess this behaviour will be fixed once the only installed version will be 1.7.

This happens (again, I guess...) because 1.6.x is your default version for resources, so it is opened by default (and resources installed).

To avoid this behaviour I suggest to install them manually in Beta version during the beta period.

Thank you so much for your kind reply.    That is exactly what I did after a night of troubled dreams and a grim determination to keep those assets.   I opened the beta version of Designer, told it to behave itself, and opened each document file containing the downloaded assets rather than using “Import Assets.”   The beta asked me if I was quite sure about that and I made the suggested copy of each file.   And then I methodically created new categories and added selections, one by one.   GOT ‘EM!!!!

And on quite another note — thank you, too, for creating the glorious smoke and cloud brushes. They are spectacular!!

    Merry Christmas!

  12. For starters, Affinity Publisher is not going to rent the socks off of us.    For another — having used Pagemaker and later, InDesign for many years,  and having found that if and when  I had  a question it was tough luck, Publisher — plus Photo and Designer — comes with these Forums where the staff and developers at Affinity/Serif are extremely helpful and exceptionally courteous in an otherwise generally unhelpful world.  Experienced users also respond very kindly with answers to “how to” questions.    Truly great features!!!    I will leave it to everybody else to enumerate all the good stuff Publisher can do.

  13. Actually, all the brushes imported beautifully.   Some of the assets I found in the Resources forum and which imported perfectly into the Commercial version of Designer, refuse to import into the Beta.   They just shoot back and open the commercial version, where they already exist.   This is disappointing, but not unexpected.    I hope that the designers of these lovely things will upgrade their files when v. 1.7 is ready for purchase.
