It might be useful to post this question in the Customer Support section of this particular part of the Forums. Someone who can successfully help you should find your question rather quickly — even over the weekend. Hope this helps a little!! -
No product key for Appstore purchases?
jmwellborn replied to MarkkuP's topic in Customer Service, Accounts and Purchasing
Thank you again -- especially for your kind response. It all worked like a charm. The interesting thing is that I my Photo v. 1.6.7 purchased in 2017 from the Apple App Store indicated that there were no updates available. Nor could one check in Preferences for automatic updates. My fresh version of Photo, downloaded yesterday (Jan. 3.) from the Affinity Store is v. 1.6.11. And "check for updates" is right there!! Everything downloaded as smoothly as could be, and after a few minutes of reloading Libraries, brushes, and palettes, I am up and running. Best thing I have done so far in 2019!! And please thank everybody at Affinity for their daily courtesies to all of us who browse through the Forums. It is amazing what we can learn by reading topics that may matter to each of us. I have a many-page personal (and very scrubby) "Help" manual for Publisher, derived from screenshots of the solutions described in these topics. Quite battered, I might add. So now I am back to the inpainting brush tool. Working wonders on a rather dodgy photo of a dodgy drawing from the 1300's!! -
Inpainting problem
jmwellborn replied to MBR's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
I probably have no business commenting here, because I am not a professional photographer, but I found a video solution (I think elsewhere in these forums) that seems to work every single time for making the inpainting tool work. Open the JPEG. Add a new pixel layer. With that layer highlighted, select inpainting brush tool. In the Context Toolbar, change the box that reads “Current Layer” to the other choice “Current Layer and below.” Then choose the size of the brush, depending on what you want to remove, being careful not to make it overly large. And paint away!!!!! It is working flawlessly on my MAC Sierra. -
Thank you! These brushes are really fun!

No product key for Appstore purchases?

Thank you so much!!! I have nothing against the App Store in theory, but am so pleased that I will be able to get everything together in the Affinity Store. First Affinity Store purchase of 2019 coming up, tomorrow morning!! Post Trash, that is. -
No product key for Appstore purchases?
jmwellborn replied to MarkkuP's topic in Customer Service, Accounts and Purchasing
Thank you so much for sorting this out so neatly!! As an aside, is it possible for me to PURCHASE Affinity Photo all over again from the Affinity Store? I would really like to have everything from one source, especially as we move into integrated 1.7s between the three applications! So far, I have Designer and Designer for iPad sorted out, and when Publisher is ready (I am on v. 206) I will definitely buy it from the Affinity Store. On day one, I might add. That will leave Photo out in the cold -- I think. I am really happy to buy Photo again, and in fact would be delighted to add a smidge to the Serif coffers. Just don't want to gum up my MAC. Would I need to uninstall the App store version of Photos first? And if so, would my current Photo .afphoto files go down the drain? -

Oops!! I was working from my iPad, and accidentally attached the wrong screen shot. Here is the one for Photo. Sorry! -
No product key for Appstore purchases?
jmwellborn replied to MarkkuP's topic in Customer Service, Accounts and Purchasing
Here is what I did. I also bought Photo (about 2 years ago) from the Mac appstore and when trying to download the beta from the Affinity/Serif website, was refused without a product key, which I did not have because of the appstore purchase. I found this entry in the forums (attached below) and clicked on the “download” highlighted in blue. The beta downloaded and installed in my MAC Applications perfectly. I am sure you can find a similar entry for Designer in another part of these forums. I didn’t have to do that, because I recently bought Designer directly through the Affinity store, so that beta downloaded without a workaround. Hope this helps. -
Many, many pages, fellas. It is a book. Going splendidly. It is a free world so we can each use what we choose. I choose Publisher.

Nope. No problems. Both Save and Save As are always good ideas. Not just “at this state...”. Good move!

I totally agree with you. I am biting the bullet with v. 206, which is pretty seamless in my opinion. I am currently completely revising a long and illustrated book I originally wrote several years ago using InDesign. I have the whole thing converted from PDF to a single .afpub file and after reformatting the master pages, text flow, and paragraph and text style settings, am now writing directly in Publisher. It is working very smoothly. Especially since Publisher is in beta, I am covering my tracks by very frequent Saves. I am also doing a Save As, and giving it another document name, whenever I add something tricky, like additional pages at the front, or within the document. Then if I have a disaster, I can go back to the previous saved version (i.e. “first copy” or “second copy”) without losing the whole thing. I cannot see any good reason to type everything out in something like Word, or poor old Pages, and then laboriously place it in Publisher. Publisher is an excellent word processor on its own! And fast!! I am not worrying about “widows, orphans, runts” or indexes, or tables of contents, or anything else until I am done with the copy. Nor am I worrying about where the illustrations are finding themselves as additional text flows before or after them. All that comes later when I add them in the correct (and undoubtedly changed) spot and use text wrap. In places where I am adding a several-page insert of new material, I am writing that as a new Publisher file, editing it, and then doing a copy/paste into the major file. So far it is working beautifully. I might add that I am using Affinity Photo to spruce up several illustrations that include copies of paintings from the 1400’s and 1500’s. That inpainting brush tool is a godsend! Last, unless you have a predetermined page limit why not let the text, and what you want to say, be the decision for where the images, charts, etc. are placed, rather than placing them and then limiting text to conform? (always presuming that a chart doesn’t hit the bottom of a page!). As for Adobe. Right. Gone and not bemoaned!!! Happy New Year

No product key for Appstore purchases?

Who knew? I just downloaded the Photo Beta via an official entry in another location here in AFFINITY Forums, rather than logging into the Affinity Store, and down the Beta came, happily ever after. Nice!!!!! -

I wasn’t commenting on participation in a beta for ipad. I know that there isn’t one. Further, with only a few days use of Designer on both desktop and ipad, I wouldn’t be qualified to comment on “click the icon to open program,” so wouldn’t have the unmitigated gall to comment on either version except to say that I already love both. What I — obviously very poorly — meant to say was that because I bought Photo in Feb. 2017 from the App store, I apparently cannot try out the Photo beta on my desktop. (Probably not qualified to comment on that either.). -

2 cents times 50, Mike. So glad somebody with 3,360 posts and 1,219 returns suggested working with tracking and kerning to solve the “runt” problem. Thought of suggesting it — because it is what I have been doing for donkey’s years — but didn’t want the usual suspects doubting my ability to work around much of anything. Pretty funny, actually. Happy New Year!!- 27 replies

No product key for Appstore purchases?
jmwellborn replied to MarkkuP's topic in Customer Service, Accounts and Purchasing
I tried to purchase Designer for ipad directly from the Affinity store yesterday, and was repeatedly connected to the Appstore, no matter how hard I tried. No product key but I hope that when updates are available, I will be notified through the Appstore. Bought Photo two years ago the same way. No Beta. Bought Designer recently through the Affinity store, and now also have the Beta. I am thoroughly enjoying the Publisher betas (from last August right up through v.. 206) and will most definitely buy Publisher FROM THE AFFINITY STORE. Hopefully. -

Guides not showing up
jmwellborn replied to noxdiurna's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
This must be a Windows-only problem. They are working perfectly with my MAC OS Sierra and v. 206. -
You are right. But there is an easy -- if still slightly laborious -- way to search for unmarked occurrences right now. Just use VIEW>STUDIO>Find and Replace, and then type the word you are looking for (i.e. "woodshed") in the FIND block, and then click on Find below. Do not enter anything in the Replace or Replace All sections. You will then get a dropdown of every time the word "woodshed" appears in the document. Click on each "woodshed" and you will be sent automatically to the page where it appears. Just note it down, and then manually add the page numbers to the index. This is clunky, but works. The only problem with this is that if extra copy is added to a page, and everything else moves to another page, the "woodshed" may turn up somewhere later on. Just a thought.

Learning curve. So many good things! But definitely worth it. And it gets easier and easier as you work with it more and more. Once the commercial Publisher is available, they will undoubtedly have an excellent Help section, if Photo and Designer can be used as examples. Meanwhile, use the Beta with caution, and export a PDF for anything you wish to keep -- just in case. Soon you may find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, thinking "h'm'm, I could make an Asset out of that" or "bet a Symbol would solve the problem!" or "wouldn't an offset in the text frame look nifty?" or etc. And there are always the forums, with so many really helpful people!! -
Insert Index -- how?
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Thank you! Every so often, computers have a way of making their humans feel like total idiots. The computers are usually right. Guess we humans operate on too many things other than 1’s and 0’s!! I hope you like Publisher as much as I do! -
Good heavens! What in the world did you have for dinner? I am currently revising a 300-page book In Publisher. Smooth as can be. It was originally produced with InDesign, which I used for years! Also Pagemaker, which I used for many years until Indesign took it and wrecked it. Publisher may not suit you, but that does not mean that it won’t make hundreds of thousands of people extremely happy. And not simply for the local church newsletter, either, which was, if I may be permitted to say so, not a very kind remark. Merry Christmas, all the same!
