Same thing in Photo for MAC v. 1.6.11. There isn't a picture tool at all in either version.

I have Photo Beta 1.7.0.110 installed on my MAC Sierra. Here is what I got from Photo Help just now. .

I had two of the darned things. My dog knocked one out of my hands and it smashed on the floor (ver’r’r’ry hard to read thereafter) and the other stared balefully at me once too often with its dreary gray face. The download, save, transfer, etc. etc. etc. was a pain in the neck too. Guess I may research the free app stuff, if I ever get tired of drawing goofy stuff in Designer on my MAC. Otherwise, It is back to good old fashioned printed books. They don’t have batteries to charge!

1.7.0.227 Autoflow Broken?
jmwellborn replied to J.L. Forrest's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Apparently I may have the same problem. Opened a 66-page .afpub document with facing pages in Beta v. 227. All pages linked perfectly. Everything edited, images inserted, text wrap perfect. Knowing that I was going to increase the length of the document by several pages of interspersed new material (being typed directly into the document — not by cut and paste), I added an initial 10 more new blank pages after page 66. When I reached the bottom of page 66 during the editing, I attempted to continue flowing additional text (which should have been available for text flow because I had entered quite a lot of new material in previous pages) using Shift + Click on the text flow icon. Nothing. Not only that, but roughly 7 pages of text which were originally at the end of the document had vanished. I dragged the bottom of the text frame to see the unplaced text. Nothing. V. 227 had wiped out roughly 7 pages of material. I tried cutting and pasting those 7 pages from a duplicate saved .afpub file into the v. 227 file, setting the Text type cursor within the text frame on p. 66. Paste did not work. In fact, it just pasted one page of new text on top of the entire filled text frame on p. 66. The only way I could get those last 7 old pages back into the document was to draw text frames on each empty new page, then go back to page 66, shorten the frame, Shift+ Click on the linking icon, and then retype everything on those 7 pages from scratch, starting where the end of the old page 66 (now on the new page 67) began. At that point, I could resize page 66 to the original full length of the document and all the new pages linked into the main 66-page document. I haven’t tried this in Beta v. 238. Hadn’t the stamina. My MAC Sierra does, but . . . -
Adobe gave me the runaround 2 years ago, informing me that I could not use my purchased ($600.00) version of InDesign CS5 or 6 or whatever and that I would have to use their Creative Cloud subscription. So I unsubscribed permanently to anything Adobe. Don't like bait and switch. Out the window went InDesign (and Photoshop with it, on principle). Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are lovely, and now Affinity Publisher is up and running in Beta and will be equally splendid when its release version is ready. I am already using it before then (even though we are warned by the developers that we could have problems) and am finding it a real pleasure to use. So hang on, PLQ! In short order we can all leave Adobe in the rear-view mirror if we wish!

Nope. I have tried this with sundry images -- some taken from old prints, some from recent photographs, some converted from screen shots to .afphoto files and then imported again into Photo to be adjusted and exported as Jpegs. All edited first in Photo, captions added with Photo, image and caption grouped, exported as JPEG without background, and then placed in my text document. In Publisher I have Show Special Characters on but am not clicking on a text frame first. I am most definitely using the place icon to draw the size of the jpeg with caption and then drawing the entire image (not one of its borders) over into the text, where I then use text wrap. Driving me bats. (Maybe I was already bats.) Currently I am using Picture Tool (which is now automatically opening my Finder>Pictures>and the selected folder) and then choosing an image to use. Seems to be working as long as I drag from the left, even if I want the image to be snapped to the right border of the text frame. I have given up dragging from right to left.

Using Photo, I have several images each grouped with a caption, then each saved as a JPEG. I am trying to add them to illustrate a book-length document written in Publisher. So far everything is working very smoothly except for a strange and erratic behavior placing the images. If I use FILE>Place to select an image/caption, sometimes that portion of Finder>Pictures>and all images are greyed out, and nothing can be selected. If I then try using the Picture Tool (not the Picture Frame Tool) plus Place, I can select the picture I want from Finder, and place it in the Publisher text frame if I drag the selection area from the left side of the Text Frame. But sometimes the caption under the picture is in reverse, reading from right to left as though it was turned upside down. If I then delete the faulty image and go back to FILE/Place (not the Picture Tool + Place) the images in Finder are usually able to be used this time, and when I select the very same image that had the reverse caption, this time I can place it with the caption appearing exactly as it should. I have also discovered that if I try to place an image/caption, selected either by File>Place or by using the Picture Tool plus Place, and drag the image from the right side of the Text Frame the caption is consistently incorrect. I have attached a screenshot to show what is happening. I have also made a filler text single page document which I could send, plus a second single page with the same screen shots, if technical support would like to have them. This is surely not "user error" because it is very erratic. Using MAC Sierra. I can definitely work around it, but I think something must be amiss!

image captions within longer text
jmwellborn replied to mycroft's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Thank you, thank you! I KNEW there had to be a way if only I was bright enough to find it. Sounds like an Asset to me? Although it was fun moving from Photo to Designer to Publisher (all open and running flawlessly at the same time, I might add) it was going to be a ve’r’r’ry slow process for a whole lot of illustrations scattered hither and yon over a whole lot of pages. As far as anchored objects are concerned, thank you for the reminder. It will surely help others as well. I always finalize the text and do a last-edit before I start with illustrations. That way there are no surprises and I can scroll through Page Studio thumbnails to see how the pages will look without worrying about things like “where did that polo player go? He was right here a minute ago!” I hope your description of how to do this makes it to the release Publisher Help. I suspect it will be widely appreciated! Thank you again. -
Tried that on my MAC. If the image is on the pasteboard, outside the document window, it will group with a text frame with the caption, but then when the Move tool sends it over into the text frame already on the document page, only the image remains. The caption text frame disappears, leaving a white space where it had been grouped with the image. If the image is already on the document page within a text frame, it is not possible to move another caption text frame to it, where it could be grouped. Something very odd here.

image captions within longer text
jmwellborn replied to mycroft's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
I am presently working with the same issues and just perusing the forums. So far my most satisfactory solution is a most tedious — if ultimately successful — process. Edit an image in Photo, bring it into Designer, add a text frame and caption, group the image and text frame, export as a JPEG, then insert the grouped JPEG into Publisher, where Text Wrap then works flawlessly. If there is a simple way to import an image into Publisher and group it with a caption, and then place it into a text frame and use Text wrap, I haven’t found it so far. Still looking. Help? -
View 2-page spread

Don’t give up the ship! There may be a bit of a learning curve with Publisher for some (like me) who had used other publishing applications, because it has so many sophisticated features that are either new or differently organized, but if you will stick with it, and ask any questions you have on these forums, you will find that the Affinity staff and users with long experience (not me!) will be wonderfully helpful. I really love it and cannot wait for the release version!! -

Also, one of many very useful tips I have found in these forums is that if your computer screen is wide enough to accommodate them, after you have added the facing pages to your Pages Studio, you can then click on the center of the facing pages thumbnail and you will have both of the document pages on your screen at the same time. I use that quite a lot, especially when looking at the placement aesthetics of text and images. -
Thank you!!! Would appreciate the “butchering!” Definitely required. Your little fellow is unbelievably charming with that wry but crooked smile and the close-together eyes. I couldn’t resist!

Don't worry. It was written by Anon in 1066, attributed anonymously to Shakespeare and summarily denounced by Sir Thomas More. Chalk it up to the forthcoming Arctic Vortex.

A long time ago in a land far away There lived a little bull who didna like his hay Instead he noshed on haggis; Glenfiddich was his drink And while he grew more portly he didna stop to think. One day his sins o’er took him; his legs they did collapse; Now that grown up bovine has landed on his ***.

Totally agree. Affinity Publisher Beta v. 227 is sophisticated and smoooooooooth on my Mac. Haven’t had this much fun writing in years!! (Even with the forewarned “not yet ready” caution from the developers.) Also a many-years Pagemaker then InDesign user, having created over 38,200 pages with them.

Numbering on master pages in v. 221
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Got the solution. Works very smoothly now. -
I am experiencing a very odd problem with this. Everything works according to the careful instructions above from toltec and firstdefence, but then there is an erratic and unexplainable turn of events. Sometimes EDIT>Fill works, and sometimes it doesn't and I am left with the marching ants and an inability to fill the border. All images are imported as JPEGs. I have attached a screen shot, and would appreciate a way to sort this out. This is happening in both Photo 1.6.11 and the Photo Beta.

Multiples crashes when use .221
jmwellborn replied to emlazo1's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Same here. I haven't done anything related to Baseline Grids, but I have been toggling back and forth between .221 and Safari, and opening and closing new documents, with Saves, Save As, and Close without Saving while fiddling with page numbering. The new beta is working very smoothly on my iMAC. -
Numbering on master pages in v. 221
jmwellborn replied to jmwellborn's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
But they are not working on my MAC Sierra v. 10.12.6. Whether I start with the left facing master page (as the tutorial shows) and using the text tool place the numbering glyph, or start on the right facing master page and place the numbering glyph, if I place them independently they produce the result I have included in the screenshot. The Page thumbnails show the numbering correctly, but the actual pages do not. Pages 3 and 3 (shown in thumbnail as 2,3) are followed by pages 5 and 5 (shown in the thumbnail as 4,5). However, if I use the method shown in the original tutorial, and place the glyph on one facing master page, and then either copy and drag or copy and paste it to the other facing master page, the numbering works correctly. I had hoped that there might be a simpler way. Anyway, knowing that it doesn't work the way I might like it, I am perfectly happy with working with it the way it wants to. In the scheme of things, it is a very slight detail!! P.S. The screen shot does not show that the thumbnail for Pages 2,3 is highlighted.
