Hi @GarryP . This is really nice, but I am trying to fill the puzzle shapes with images, with zero success. Is that possible, and if so, how do the puzzle pieces differ from other shapes (which I know how to fill)? I am obviously doing something wrong.

Symbols are not part of the Publisher Persona, and never have been.
Yes they were, back in the betas.

Hi,
I see some features are available in 2 or 3 of the Affinity packages.
For example: both Designer and Publisher have Character/Paragraph Styles. Adjustments layers both in Designer and Photo... etc.
Is there a list that addresses all the overlaps? (Similarities and differences?)
Thank you.
I believe there is a short answer. Nope. No list. I believe @Alfred would advise you to download the trial versions of the three apps and see what each can do. You should be pretty amazed! Additionally, if you have all three retail versions, you can jump from one to the other within the apps to accomplish what you would like to do using the particular strongest points of each app.

I am working on my first long document (as opposed to brochure type content). It is a book-long text of about 300 pages. Text cleaned up in BBEdit and loaded into Affinity Publisher. Styles set up etc and everything working smoothly until I got to page 104 of the text. At that point Affinity began to crash and would not let me go past a paragraph. All crashes recorded by Apple. The computer is a Late 2012 MacMini 2.3 Ghz with 16 GB of RAM. It never failed even once with Adobe Indesign. This morning it has crashed four times and will not allow me to continue working. I have run Clean My Mac, quit all applications. Restarted. All the usual stuff. It seems to be something to do with text flow as text flow quit but I was able to re-establish the text flow quickly and it appeared to be working fine. There are no graphics in the document.
Attached is a revised version of your file. I have had a good long look at your file, and first discovered that there was a major break in the text frame links. In your document I discovered extra pages 466-807 - some with your book text in it, most blank and linked. What happened was that the text frame link on page 112 was linked way down the pages to something. Can't even remember. Anyway, I unlinked p. 112, and then proceeded to the Pages Panel, where I scrolled down and began selecting blocks of blank pages, then went up to DOCUMENT>Delete, and chose several hundred pages at a time. When I finally had every single blank page deleted from the Pages Panel, I went back to page 1, and checked the text frame links to be sure that they were all correctly linked. When I reached page 112, I manually linked it to p. 113 and suddenly your text began to flow properly I should note that at that point (pp. 114-115) your Master A was applied in reverse order, and I clicked on that page spread icon in the Pages Panel and chose APPLY MASTER A. Starting with p. 116, you will need to correct the order of your two-page spreads (headers) throughout the rest of the document. I haven't tried to figure out how to do that in one fell swoop, and after 2-1/2 hours of work, have decided to let you have a go at that on your own.
Importantly, I have managed to flow what must be your document from pages 1 to 431. Some text appears to be missing at the bottom of p. 272 and the top of p. 273 (in my revised version of your file). There appears to be information missing. I have also moved every text frame on each page to the correct position and deleted all of the many hopeful paragraph marks (Special Characters).
I cannot promise that I have not bungled something, and must beg you to carefully edit everything. For example, I believe there was a bibliography on pg 13, which seems to have disappeared. Before I managed to get the problem sorted, I didn't have any crashes, but some serious colored-wheel-of-death issues trying to move text frames. Publisher worked beautifully -- and speedily -- once the whole text wrap snarl was sorted. For what it is worth, I seriously snarled the whole text frame linking thing with the first long book I reworked, using Publisher for the first time.
Hope this helps!!
P.S. It would probably be a good thing to number your pages. You can do that easily by placing numbers place marks on Master Page A.

Thank you, jmwellborn and carl123! I'm going to upgrade right now, can't wait to see the new version
Hi jmwellborn, may I ask why you stay with Sierra? I just checked my MBP, it's High Sierra 10.13.6. I remember I was directly from Mavericks to High Sierra, otherwise it was very limited to work together with my iPhone and iPad... if I'm already with High Sierra, is it better to upgrade to Mohave? Thank you!
I am not the right person to ask about upgrading to Mohave. All I know is that some time ago, when I was speaking with Apple tech support about a completely different issue, I asked whether it was smart to upgrade to Mohave when Sierra was working so well for me. I was definitely advised against it. Eventually, when Apple stops supporting it with Safari updates, I suppose I will have to upgrade to High Sierra (which will still be supported for a few years) but until then I am working with a desktop that handles everything with ease and without glitches.

Hello,
Thanks for your advise in July. It has been three months, is now safe to upgrade to the latest version of the new Designer and Photo?
Thank you in advance
I have upgraded to v. 1.7.3 — the latest in both Photo and Designer and they are working beautifully with Sierra. I have no plans to upgrade to either High Sierra (until I have to) or to Mohave.

I had also done most of what @R C-R suggests, other than creating a few new categories and removing categories from the brushes panel. That comes later. Before doing that, I have made a reference document about all of my brushes by a tedious — but ultimately rewarding — process. I created a contents list (for example of all raster brush categories) in the order in which they appear in my Brushes Panel, and then made a screenshot of each brush’s extended panel, such as “DAUB Blackbox.” I have then created pages containing the screenshots in the correct order. This way, when I want some type of specialized brush, after I have removed most of them from the Brushes Panel, I can look up the characteristics I want without floundering through the entire .afbrushes folder elsewhere on the computer. Time consuming right now but worth it to me. I also have any PDFs related to uses, sample colors, etc, copied in this document.

Hi jmwellborn
This isn't a bug - Designer 1.7.3 isn't meant to have the Stock Panel. That said it will be coming in 1.8 and can be seen in the Windows 1.8 beta!No problem. StudioLink to the rescue. The windows beta is of no avail here.

In v. 1.7.3 I have just noticed that the Stock Panel is missing from the VIEW>STUDIO options. I have it in Photo v. 1.7.3 and Publisher v. 1.7.3, but even with a Control+Open restart the app option, and unchecking everything except Reset Studio, the Stock panel has not turned up. I must be missing something.

@WJC Instead of giving Callum a deadline -- which could be rather self-defeating since there are almost 108,000 people on these forums, each with his or her own Must Have This Or Else deadline, I would like to suggest a simple workaround. At some stage you can perhaps figure out a more sophisticated way to accomplish your objective. I also had used Pagemaker since 1988 and then InDesign -- the latter of which I truly despised. I have tried a simple solution to your problem, which -- if you will give it a try -- should accomplish what you need for this particular book.
I assume that the front cover, Preface, Introduction, etc. are to be included before the 100 pages of content. As other people in this thread have mentioned, books come with sheets of paper -- each with a front and a back side. So here is what you do. Assemble your front cover (blank back page), Preface, etc. on as many facing pages as you will need as a separate document (i.e. 24 pages). If your last page in this document has text on it, then you will have to decide whether you want it to be a left-hand page for the first right-hand page of your next 200 pages. If not, you will have to add two extra blank pages. Be sure that you end with an even number of pages .
EDIT>Cut (or EDIT>Copy) this document and keep it on your Clipboard. Open your 100 page document, and be sure that you have a linked text frame between the left and right pages of your Master Pages. Next go to your Pages Panel and add the same number of blank pages as your document on the Clipboard contains (i.e. 24) before the first Page shown in your Pages Panel. Next, with your Move tool click on the first blank page (now Page 1) and carefully check that the text frame on each of the blank pages is linked to the correct text frame on the next page. The easy way to see this is to go to TEXT>Show Special Characters and be sure that this option is checked. This is going to take a very small bit of work, but not as much as fiddling with 100 pages of document. (If you have any problem, be sure to go to Publisher HELP>Linking Text Frames.)
Then, go back to the new blank Page 1, chose your Text Frame Tool, click inside the text frame and then click Command + V (if you are on a MAC, otherwise EDIT>Paste), and all of your preliminary pages (front, Preface, etc.) should flow quite neatly into your document.
I have just tried this, and it definitely works. All you need now is a bit of patience. Have a nice weekend.

Our plan it to make things clearer for those who have not been around very long. Coming here as a newbie must be daunting to know where to start. So an FAQ type forum would be a good start.
Perfect!! Perhaps also included in each HELP, or at least a cross-reference to the FAQ in the Forums? For all of those -- like me -- who faced the initial blank screen the first time I opened Photo (the first of the three apps I purchased) and thought, "Now what?" it would be priceless.

@Patrick Connor why not just close this topic and stop the circular firing squad in its tracks? There are certainly enough asked and answered posts for anybody considering making the switch from Adobe and in his or her right mind to grasp the subject! I am sure that multiple thousands of us — like me — who had used InDesign are now very happily using Publisher with the PDF workaround for old files. It may take a bit of fiddling to get those files up to speed, but it is well worth not being stuck behind the rental prison bars. Publisher beats InDesign hands down!!

Nice sky. In the old AP video, there was one showing how to use vector to enhance some parts of a building… I can't find it, but it would be the logical step with this photo!
That would be nice to see.

Just to prove that even fossils can learn! The 35 mm slide view (top) of the chapel roof at the Air Force Academy in Colorado was scanned several years ago and lay forlornly in all its glum grandeur in a "some day this photo needs fixing file." Below is my amateur attempt at a sky replacement using Photo.

Thank you. I have now found the save and the app has created a file for me in my icloud. The christmas tree file is .afdesign. I open in affinity and select a tree and save to symbol. My problem is then that I cannot used this saved symbol because when I open a new document it is no longer there. Only there when the trees.afdesign document is open. I presume that I could not import to assets because it is the wrong file type. I am more concerned about saving a symbol and being able to use it again in another document. Maybe if I Save the .afdesign file it will save my symbol ? Thanks for the other explanations which have been really helpful in lessening my confusion - would be grateful if you could answer the query about symbols please. Thank you again.
Why not save the Christmas tree as an asset rather than a symbol? The assets are available in each new document. You should open the .afdesign document, and then go to your Assets Panel and create a new category, then highlight the tree, click on the arrow next to the word Assets, and then choose Add from Selection. I always export a new Asset category into an Assets file elsewhere on my computer so I have a backup. I am sure there are differences between how to do this on an iPad and an iMac, but the results should be the same.
I hope this helps.

The very first thing that sold me was the very first Affinity Photo tutorial I found after gnashing my teeth over the Adobe rental racket. “Thank you for watching,” after a highly professional, extremely detailed demonstration of just one possibility using the software. What an extraordinary difference from the Tough Bananas approach from Adobe. I was sold, bought Photo, and muddled through on my own for a long time. It was not until I signed on to the Forums that I came to appreciate just how much more than “thank you for watching” Serif represents. Old fashioned courtesy, unfailing patience with those of us who ask questions that may have been asked umpteen times before, and constant watchfulness to keep the forums from descending into grudge matches, combined with the brilliance of the entire Affinity Team are without price — and in my estimation without peer. Now I use Publisher, Designer, and Photo — all wonderfully together with Studio Link — and can’t wait to fire up my Mac each day. As for the forum members, their generosity in showing us “how to ...” and sharing their Resources has been amazing. I never knew I could have so many unknown friends!

Text Wrap Doesn't Work?
in V1 Bugs found on macOS

@thomaso is absolutely correct. I did just that months ago, and it works flawlessly every single time I open a new document. Ignore Text Wrap stays unchecked.
