  1. Don’t know if this will help, but this is what I do.  Select the Picture Frame Tool (either the rectangle icon or the ellipse icon with the cross mark inside) and drag out something the size you want on your canvas.  Then go to FILE>Place and select the image you wish to use from its location (in Mac it is possibly Finder>Pictures).  When you find your image and click on OPEN, your image should appear inside the picture frame with the cross mark, which is on your canvas.    You can then use various adjustments available to you.

  2. Hi @SF Charter Boat !  Just in case @h_d does not find this last message, just go to FILE>Save As and then give your document a name (i.e. boat in harbor) and chose your destination (ie. Desktop).   Your file will be saved in .afphoto format and all of your layers, adjustments etc. will be saved along with it.  I have learned a lot from this thread too!!

Well those who missed that skies backgrounds offer opportunity can try to use other skies backgrounds from the net, there are bunch of such images also freely available. - Related to a macro file for easier applying adjustment layers, when you look the Affinity usage video you can see that the coresponding macro creates 11 child-layers (one mask and some adjustment layers) for setups...

(The order here is just the order I've saw them from top to down in that usage video)

    1. Mask (Paint to show/hide) - Mask layer
    2. Soften Sky (Gaussian Blur) - Live filter layer
    3. Saturation (HSL Shift Adjustment) - Adjustment layer
    4. Brightness & Contrast (Brightness Adjustment) - Adjustment layer
    5. Contrast Boost (Curves Adjustment) - Adjustment layer
    6. Detail Smoothing (Curves Adjustment) - Adjustment layer
    7. Mid Tone Boost (Curves Adjustment) - Adjustment layer
    8. Cooler Sky (White Balance) - Adjustment layer
    9. Warmer Sky (White Balance) - Adjustment layer
    10. Highlights Compression (Shadows and Highlights ?) - Adjustment or Filter layer possible
    11. Hazy Sky (Fill) - Adjustment layer

...and shows up their settings on one customized settings panel.

So people can try to make their own similar behaving custom macro for such things, which BTW would be a good chance to dive into creating AP macros and to learn something about these here by own practising.

If you can find some sky images that you like, you should be able to use the information above to make any adjustments that you might wish.

I watched the tutorial on sky replacement and then attempted. When I clicked on file and then clicked on place  no image came up for sky jpg.

Oops.  I should have included your quote first.  Anyway, hope this may help you.

    Greetings,

After watching a few videos on Affinity products, I purchased Photo & Designer today... However, I now read on the forums that the Studiolink function allowing you to seamlessly switch between them is only if you own publisher... Ok, maybe i was confused about the persona thing or it wasn't well explained in the videos - but the whole reason I picked up designer & photo was to avoid the dreaded round trips (exporting, importing, exporting, importing - yada yada yada).

With that said, is it possible to get a refund? I don't have a need for publisher and If I have to round trip every time I want to switch between Photo & Designer, I may as well use other programs I have installed already.

Your help on this would be greatly appreciated

    -Terry

You should post this in the section of the forums “Customer Service . . .”    Probably with a topic heading about requesting a refund.   Serif does make refunds if the request comes within their established time window.   Meanwhile, should you reconsider, having Publisher as well is really superb.  The StudioLink ability between the three apps is simply wonderful, and the “dreaded round trips” are a thing of the past.

FWIW, I am seeing the same thing: sometimes the text ruler appears & other times not. When it does not, only restarting the app fixes it.

This text ruler problem has been randomly recurring since last year when we were in the initial betas.   It happens here too, on a purely random basis.  Recently less frequently, but still the only solution I have found is to save and  close the document, then open again.  Usually that solves the problem without having to restart the app.  No matter what, it is a little unnerving.

  6. I have stored gradients I have created as styles.   Probably a good idea to create a new Styles Category before you start (i.e. My Gradients).  You place a rectangle shape, fill it with the gradient type and color(s) you want, then with that gradient layer selected, go to the Styles Panel, select your new category, then click on the hamburger icon at the right, and choose Add Style from Selection.   You can then apply that gradient to anything you want - text, shapes, etc. at any time.  Also, you can export your gradients to a folder to back up your work, and to import your gradients into Photo, Designer, and Publisher Styles Panels.

  7. When I zoomed in on the sunrise this morning I found this tiny commercial airplane up there all alone in the clouds.  By deploying the selection brush tool and some refinement I managed to get most of the fuzziness out of the airplane's edges, and was left with this.  I had to export the airplane as a PNG and then clone brush the original image to get rid of the original fuzzy airplane, and then place the new airplane back in, but all in all, I was amazed at what I could do with Affinity Photo.   Wish I could figure out how to make the airplane perfectly crisp!.  But I do love the watercolor look.

"Publisher drop a paragraph to next page, but paragraph lines can fits end of column"

(Well, it was actually yesterday, but I extracted a part of your original post. )  Does this happen with every page, or is this an isolated incident?  If isolated, I have a one-time suggestion.  Why not replace your paragraph break (Return key) for the last paragraph before the white space,  with a line break (Shift+Return).  This will treat the next paragraph as a continuation and should fill the page, but should avoid the large white space.  Worth a try?
