  1. thomaso, thanks for your reply and web links. I will go through them and see if I can learn something. Most things that I have looked at tended to be about converting colour to B&W. Regarding the white dots these are from when the negatives were originally processed in the 1960's. Along with other marks I am able to remove them albeit a slow and boring process. Thanks again, if I get stuck I'll come back for more advice.
  2. Are there any guides available for dealing with B&W negatives? I have a large number of 35mm B&W negatives to deal with from the 60's. I have managed to deal with some of them but I don't think I am obtaining the best final result. Many of the negatives are marked, covered in white dots, etc. Most of this I can deal with, slow process but manageable, it the final stage that I feel I need some guidance with, brightness, shadows and contrast in particular. Images are scanned on a CanoScan 9000F MarkII to Tif as a monochrome negative, greyscale (16Bit), output resolution of 2400 dpi, this gives me a scanned image of 14-15mb on average. I wondered if I'm on the right track with my scanning and would appreciate suggestions. I'm using an iMac running OS 11.6.8 Big Sur, 27inch Retina 5K though that does not help with the scanning!
  3. Hi Walt, thanks for the super quick reply, much appreciated. I cannot see a detached handle as stated. However I had a brainstorm and clicked on View then actual size...... LOL The image is about 1.5cms wide, no wonder the text does not fit. I've been scanning colour slides most of the day, this the last one before my eyes failed me has gone wrong badly somewhere. A good night sleep and start again tomorrow by doing a new image scan. Hopefully it will be fine next time around!!!!!! I'm sat here laughing....Thanks
  4. First of all the tech stuff: iMac running Big Sur 11.1 with 16mb RAM & Affinity Photo 1.8.6 I have been using the frame text tool to add text to photo's going onto Flickr. Today after I had completed text on 3 images I came to the 4th and the font size was to big (?), I took the font down to 5pt, as small as I could go the cursor was huge at least 2.5cm . Totally unacceptable for the photo, I have tried re-booting my Mac, re-starting Affinity Photo and checked preferences to no avail. Does anyone have an inkling as to why this would happen.
  5. Hiya, thanks for your reply, it's much appreciated. You are correct, the file size was reduced considerably (taken with an EOS 5D) to allow easy emailing. I have tested your solution and it works perfectly, I just wonder why I had not thought of using png? Problem solved, thanks again.
  6. Hi folks, I sometimes email images to a family member who is becoming involved with photography, however when I take my image (starts life as RAW and then to Jpeg) then reduce the file size for emailing the sky for some reason 'blows', the ground also looks quirky here. The original Jpeg looks perfectly normal, in fact this image has been printed onto canvas and sits on a wall in our home. I am assuming this is down to me but in all honesty I have never noticed this behaviour before. I use an iMac 27 inch Retina 5K, currently using OS Mojave. Here is an example of the sky issue that I am referring to:
  7. Hello again, from memory the Develop Button has always been in the same place. Hopefully someone still using Mojave will answer you!
  8. Hi, I have just checked my Affinity Photo 1.8.1 and the Develop Button is in the same place it's always been. I'm using Mac OS 10.13.6 High Sierra.
  9. GabrielM.....thanks for that, I was looking in totally the wrong place!
  10. I cannot find my Free Hand Selection Tool in Affinity Photo It is not showing in the left hand tool menu, how do I add to my tool list? I cannot see an option for it......
  11. Mojave, same reason I have not upgraded my iMac. My card reader would not work on my iMac (new last April) went into our Apple store it failed on all the display iMac's, worked perfectly on all the MacBooks, they could not explain that away either. I now have my 2008 iMac's keyboard plugged into a USB socket and the card reader works perfectly from the keyboard USB's? As for my first go, I know there was some more work to do and of course final results are always subjective. The sky was pretty much the one that looked half okay, I would not use such dramatic sky even though the chopper was photographed at RAF Biggin Hill mid summer. No contrast etc just a quick flourish. It's odd, my first attempt with the flood selection tool worked perfectly, in between household chores I have revisited the image and each time the tool acted differently, however practice, practice and more practice until I can control it properly, it's a time thing. The other thing I have found it gets grumpy with aircraft with white in the finish, get confused no doubt. Thanks again, I'm sure you'll survive the complements Peter ps: I have TeamViewer installed pps I used to do mainframe system testing, hence why I hate computers.....
  12. @firstdefence............................ Yippy do dah! First attempt, about five minutes, probably needs a spot of tweaking, the blades for me picked up no problem though the front right is weak and I may have missed the odd spot in the background but the flood selection tool picked up pretty much everything first go. Not to sure how to strengthen the weak blade, it may be 'that's how it is'. Just picked any old sky just to see how it worked............. I think your method is/seemed easier than the online tutorial, but I may be biased of course. This is one "Old Boy" who is pretty happy at this moment. Thank you again. Peter ps: I see that you have not upgraded your OS to Mojave............neither have I
  13. @first defence........WOW, cracking video and thank you for taking the trouble to do this for me, it's really appreciated. I would have never got this sorted in a million years. Later today I'll start practicing like crazy to become proficient with the technique. THANK YOU Peter
  14. @carl123 thanks for that, I have found it difficult at times to control the Selection Brush Tool, the online videos make it look easy! In particular the rotor blades being so thin and the cockpit area as it's glass and see through and not solid..........Perhaps it's me? @firstdefence is going to show me by video how he deals with this so I look forward to his offering. I must say that I really do appreciate your responses to what may seem second nature to you guys, me I find some of this a bit 'double dutch' but I'm sure I'll crack it eventually and at least become proficient with Affinity Photo. I have a least learnt today how to correctly use layers, it's just getting to grips with the variety of them. Peter
