How to aligign nodes?

Hi!
When I have several Nodes selected I was assuming that clicking on eg. "Align bottom edges" would align the nodes properly - but it's affecting the shape - which I found very counter intuitive. Is there another way to align nodes in AD? I couldn't find any.
