Hi, I am about to start, again, trying to learn Affinity from Step One, and I find the AF tutorials too fast and done by experts who do not seem to grasp that some of us need, crawl, walk, run sequence. I just want to start from the very beginning and the in house tutorials, for me, anyway, do not teach me clearly step by step and then move on the next stage. Too much complicated stuff too early and spoken too fast. Sorry, but it is more frustrating than helpful. What other sources might I consider to get started? I would like to maybe do one video a day, or until I get it. Thanks for any suggestions, Stuart

Thanks, so I just keep doing my edits and adjustments on the image in Develop, then when I am happy, hit the blue Develop and it automatically transfers to Photo where I can add any further choices....then I can share or Save, or Save As (will have to look up that distinction) Thanks for the help.

Last question, hopefully on this topic: As I make adjustments in Develop there appears to be no Save after every adjustment. The AF Raw tutorial says once I am happy with my adjustments to click on the blue Develop. This apparently saves my adjustments, but it also, I guess, sends me to Photos. Does this mean that there is no way to keep saving the changes until the end, when I click on Develop, but takes me out of Develop to Photo? Thx

Thanks for patience and contributions. My take from this conversation is stay in Develop to do as much as possible and then move to Photo to fine tune. Thx for the bullet points and time to share. If I am not accurate in my assumption, pls advise. Thx again, Stuart

Many of the images I may use are already in raw, so it's moot about its merits or not, my interest is how much, if any, should I do in raw before moving over to Photo?
Is there any advantage doing some prelim work in Develop, then move to Photo? If so, specifically what are the fundamental basics to be done? Can I be specifically told a list of what is to my advantage while in Develop before moving? Is it correct to say AF has already done some of the work by placing it in Develop?
Or, is it the same to just move my image immediately to Photo? And keep it under one roof?

So there are a lot more tools in Photo over Develop? Is that correct? Is there a Grad Filter in Develop? Is there a histogram in Develop? It looks, not having used it before, (or Photo), like there are far more choices in Photo? So why even begin in Develop? Why not immediately transfer to Photo, with the understanding that AF places RAW images in a certain place for whatever reason? I am asking because I do not know if there are any reasons to remain in Develop after the image is opened there? What benefits do I gain by doing some adjustments there and then moving to Photo?

Thanks, got it, can't Save, SaveAs or Export, but I still am not clear:
-Should I do ANY work in Develop before moving to Photo? If so, how much and of what nature?
RC-R says it happens "automatically when I click large blue Develop button.."
-I assume I already am in Develop because AF automatically places RAW images there, so why would I have to hit it again?
Still unclear what if any, and when, I should shift to Photo after the image being placed in Develop by AF automatically

Confused about when and how the Develop Persona shifts to Photos? Or does it? I have a bunch of RAW images, and am, finally, about to start learning Affinity after using Aperture, so I am doing the tutorials..... But am not clear on what the transition is from Develop to Photos? What should I do in Develop, should I stay there, when should I shift to Photos, will it do it automatically? Just trying to start with Step One. Thx
PS Liquify rates as a major Persona??? Weird choice to make a major league category. The word Persona odd as well. No worries, though, just want to begin at the beginning

Excellent idea, have Affinity provide a list of resources, including their own, a win/win/win situation, the provider/user/Affinity
As a beginner, the AF people simply can't grasp that we need awareness and thinking and action based on teaching the basics, not showing off all the features.
Example: AF Work Book. Guess on what page the chapter title BEFORE YOU START, appears? You'd think page one, right? Nope PAGE EIGHTY SIX. This shows the lack of awareness of the needs of the beginner. Page 86 to Start?????

Glad I am back on the forum and I really do hope that I can make the effort to start again and use it.
Again, good call. Affinity now do your work and provide not just your own tutorials and books, but others as well. The benefit would be for everyone, as I would love to begin using it and recommending AF.

Completely agree with Alan PC, I believe I started this conversation and have since retreated from using Affinity, instead going back to Aperture, which I know. Seems many folk fall back on having used Photoshop. I never did. The workbook I bought but it does not even discuss how to start until half way through the book! yes, there are a lot of videos, but what Affinity has missed is to clearly, simply and easily explain, like to a child, one, two, three, How to Start. This is the weakness of Affinity for me, it did not and has not made it easy to learn, thus, any adjustments I make are done on a system since discontinued by Apple. Yes, I will try again, but Affinity is NOT for a newbie, and Affinity has dropped the ball for intro to the system, my guess is because all the advisors and designers are so far advanced they cannot comprehend the needs of a beginner.

Do you have a Beginning Tutorial, Step One, then Step Two, etc? All the fancy custom how to stuff seems to be the standard for it seems most of the folks on this forum, intermediate to advanced. AF does a poor job just getting people started, am still at the gate, mostly due to me, but would like to have a concise, clear what to do to start. Do you provide this?

Please do not be embarrassed, I am in the same boat. I find it very difficult to get a Beginning Tutorial that moves into the next very basic start. The people seem to be experts without a real consideration that some of us, speaking for myself, need fundamental, crawl, walk run progression. Maybe this program has super cool tools, but it is lacking in getting beginners on the playing field. Unfortunately, I am still reverting to Aperture. Wish the powers that be would consider those of us just starting.

Crawl, walk, run. Thanks everyone for your time and explanations. Just saw the above linked, tutorial video and can see what it can do as a start. Will shoot RAW, and go to Develop. Now to begin on the tutorials, look forward to it.

OK, got my marching orders! Will shoot RAW. And make adjustments in AF.
You say, to set white balance, exposure and shadows/highlights before I hit Develop button?
Since I have not gone through that process, assume these options are clear and available to choose?

Thanks for the classroom, explanations and patience! I just want to get as much range as possible when I go to my adjustments. My belief was that RAW provided that. Now I am learning that when the file is saved to another format that file becomes a "narrower dynamic range". So the question for me is, (besides learning the process), what difference does it make whether I shoot in RAW or JPEG Fine if both are going end up, probably, as JPEG?
-If RAW is used , does the extended latitude I had in adjustments have a different image than had I shot the same photo in JPEG Fine? Is this extended adjustment ability even visible by being transferred to a lower quality export?
-I just want to have as much range as possible when I do my adjustments and I don;t care what setting the image is created on. If I can dig deeper into the shadows and have more highlight details, that is what my end goal is. If all the RAW material cannot be translated, why even shoot RAW?
Again, appreciation to all, I just want to be clear when I start with the camera, so when I start the AF tutorials I am not still at the starting gate trying to figure out the RAW thing. I find that there is a very supportive community behind AF and look forward to beginning the tutorials, I want to make sure I have as much information on the image as possible to make the adjustments.

Thanks all for explanations and time! Obviously, I am not a technical person, and, from what has been written, there are many RAW developers. I don't even know what a sidecar is.
All I would like to understand is, am I losing any of the shadows or highlights, ie 5 stop latitude plus and minus, which I get when shooting in RAW and converting to a RAW developer in AF?
Maybe I am not getting it, but if I can shoot in RAW and have five stops either way, I would like to know if that data is transferred to whatever RAW Developer I am using and then still have five stops either way in the adjustments stage?
My understanding is this is more than JPEG offers, so that is why I shoot RAW, I get a bonus of extra latitude more so than shooting JPEG originally.
Possibly I just can't get it, but if I can't retain this latitude from shooting in RAW to making adjustments, why even shoot in RAW? Or, research another tool where I still have the five stops avail when I go into adjustment/development? I don;t care about Digital Management or library. I would like to know if during the Development process from RAW, I lose the five stops either way that I had in the original? There is something I simply am not getting and is not clear: I understand, I think that RAW must be converted, but in that process do I lose the exposure latitude? If so, it seems I either find another editing system or else why even shoot in RAW if I can't take advantage of its benefits?

"..Pressing the "Develop" button may & usually will discard a variable amount of information, but it depends on the adjustments & settings you use in the Develop Persona to develop the information into an image..
-How much is "VARIABLE AMOUNT"? This is the key to my posting and question. I understand some will be changed by adjustments and original will probably never be exactly the same as after adjustments, but this is not my concern.
-does this happen if the original is JPEG? If JPEG is 500, then it is 500 after entering Develop, right? Just a numerical example.
I am still not getting a definite piece of information which says, for example, your original RAW footage of X quantity will remain X quantity under a different name once entered into Develop.
Or, your original X, is now in Develop as Y and is half the size.
Or....?

Apologies, but this is too complicated for my old and non technical mind. Please pretend you are answering a 5 yr old.
Let's say, for example, I shoot a RAW photo in a room looking out a window, no fill flash. I have more stops both ways, outside highlights and inside shadows than shooting JPEG.. Maybe five each way.
Also, assume this photo is 5000 units of whatever information.
Now, I go to "Develop Persona" in AF. Do I still have the 5000 units to work with and adjust AFTER I have entered Develop and begin adjustments?
Have I lost any of the ranges in highlights and shadows that I had in RAW? If so, how much?
Lastly, do I lose anything after the adjustments have been made when I export them?
My main concern is losing the RAW latitude when entering Develop. Does it become a JPEG, or what? Whatever the new AF name for it, do I still have the 5000 units to work with, assuming I am not cropping?
The answer is either no, you do not have the same amount of information, and if that is the case, how much do I lose?
Or do I have all the information to work with and it is just a renaming process?

Thanks for replies, probably pre 1.7, but went to Tutorials on the site and the guy with Black hair and black glasses goes way too fast for a Beginner, so I assume it is the latest Affinity version. I feel the "teachers" know too much but cannot teach. There is a huge gap in Affinity for the ones just starting, my guess 95% of tutorials are for more advanced, which is fine, but you gotta get there first. I bought the book, but the book does not even start with Beginners! You hove to go half way into the book to start? WTF?
Thanks but no subtitles. Will try the links of the others, but a shame that Affinity developers and programers simply cannot grasp that we have to start, and they are simply not aware that their speed and presentation is not useful for those beginning . They just do not get it because they know too much. Give me someone who knows just a fraction, but can instruct A, B, C in clear fashion any day over the hot shots.
