Tap the little white triangle on the right side of the bottom context menu. Deselect the Alignment icon  (the first one). Now the cross hair will remain where you originally placed it. When you see those little white triangles/arrowheads alongside the context menu it indicates a submenu is available with more settings.🙂

I much prefer the Smart Selection brush. Small brush sizes are good for tracing intricate shapes and larger brush size for larger areas.
Thanks Alfred (I should have picked that up in the posts header). So many features hidden in the context menus!

Affinity Photo doesn’t have a tool named ‘Magnetic Selection Tool’, but the Freehand Selection Tool has ‘Magnetic’ as one of its Type options. It works moderately well for me as long as I tap instead of dragging when choosing the next anchor point.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Raquel.
Tap on the Preferences cog on the Home Screen, choose ‘Tools’ and then enable ‘Touch for gestures only’.

Too summarize the general challenges of selecting/masking objects and use them in compositions with different background:
selecting / masking remove color casts (restore „natural“ colors object, remove color spill from lightning and background reflections) remove shadows / lightness artifacts ensure geometric composition fits (single / dual plane projection, angle / POV, and size of object) tonal blend to composition (black pint, white pint, saturation, add color cast of composition) create scene-compatible lightning and shadows (highlights / shadows)

To release very fine details like hair from backgrounds is probably one of the most challenging things in image editing. How to do that depends on some preconditions like f.e. the contrast between the hair and the background and even the complexity of the background. Also the resolution of the image is important because if the single hairs are not much thicker than the pixels of the image, their colors will be a mix of the color of the hair and the background, so that it looks like a color blending. In many cases it is the better solution to erase the thin hairs and to restore them by painting. You can use thin brushes for this or prefabricated brushes with hairlocks and strands (that you can find on the web). You can take the colors you need for this directly from the hair, with the color picker.
To release objects from backgrounds, I usually select objects roughly first (usually with the Selection Brush Tool), then refine it as much as possible automatically, apply a mask and then refine it manually by using a brush that fits to my needs. To add single hairs, I use a thin brush with slightly reduced opacity, flow and hardness. This will of course work much better if you have a graphic tablet. In that case you can also use dynamics to let the brush get a little more and less thicker and more and less opaque by varying the pen pressure.
It will take some practice, good eyes and diligence. And you should not exaggerate. But I'm afraid, a one-click-solution for this problem doesn't exist.
One additional hint: always judge the result by using the zoom factor 100% (1:1). Otherwise you could fiddle until the final day, without need.

Can't this be realised by giving the text frame a size that forces the text into a vertical alignment? This should also work with columns, I think, if they are narrow enough. Precondition is of course that the character width are not too different. But that doesn't seem to be the case with this chinese letters, as far as I see.

DM1 got a reaction from MoonaticDestiny in WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM DOING?
I think it’s a fair question. What are the developers doing? Do they not have a team dedicated to the iOS apps?
We have many bugs being reported again and again. Often the same bug reported multiple times because there is no user accessible concise numbered list of reported bugs. Many reports are 'bumped' by Mods to try and get some action going with developers. Again no feedback to indicate bumping has actually resulted in the bug getting some attention.
There does not 'appear' to be a 'process' for prioritising action to fix reported bugs. I’m guessing that there must be some sort of process, but if so it lacks communication of progress to end users and, I suspect mods are just as in the dark as us when it comes to what is being fixed.
Updates and releases don’t provide a full list of fixes either. Worse still, some updates reintroduce previously 'fixed' bugs.
From a users perspective, many basic feature requests made over the past few years continue to be completely ignored.
I’d say 'all in all, development for iOS has always appeared to be a bit of a dogs breakfast', and yes, that might indeed be considered ranting 😂.

Hi  there AsherAtStrongAI, sorry to hear you are having issues.  I am having difficulty picturing your problem. Could you post a screen recording demonstrating the issue. (preferably with show touches activated). Also what smoothing method/setting are you using? 🙂

Ok, I think I have figured this out. I needed to “close” via the hamburger menu on the iPad. After doing that I could “open from iCloud” and it indeed opened the correct file.

This might be your perspective, and probably ok reacting in a private context. From my view, it is far less appropriate to be published in a civilized public forum like this.

Ah, this looks like you must have turned on 'Protect Alpha' on the context toolbar, try turning this control off.

NOTE: When screen recording, if you turn on 'Show Touches' temporarily under preferences, we can see where you are painting and which on screen buttons you are using if this solution does not fix the problem for you.

Thanks a bunch; just got it. This is perfect. The in-app help here is excellent, but switching back and forth can be distracting.
I can just open this on the Air, and will let me learn it more the way I'm used to... diving in and exploring with the manual open on the table in case I run into something I can't quite figure out.
    And huge thanks to @DM1
