Sorry.  I figured it all out.  It actually had nothing to do with affinity but with the selected cassette on the new printer

Thank you both for following up! I am glad the AD team is working on storage issues, to avoid the reinstallation workaround!
I am also very happy to report that my iCloud storage now seems to have magically fixed itself. Ipad backups are happening again, and they are a reasonable size (total 10 GB). I took no additional action since reinstalling on Mar 22. Perhaps i got an auto iOS upgrade (not sure). Currently using iOS 12.1.4.

I use Document by Readdle (free app) to create an Affinity Photo and Affinity Design folder on my iPad (inside Documents app). I then create nested folders as necessary and save all my new files using Document Menu, Save a Copy and navigating to the Documents/Affinity folder/Nested folder.. Then close the file, and use Open from Cloud, Navigate to Documents/Affinity/Nested folder and open the file. Now I have a Save option under the Document Menu and any edits are 'saved' back to Documents/Affinity/Nested as .afphoto or .afdesign file. In Documents I can select one, two or as many files as I like to move/copy backups to iCloud or Dropbox etc. Using this workflow avoids loss of files.

Welcome to Affinity Forums
If the text/logo is composed by more than one letter, select the text, go to the More menu (the ellipsis icon) and select Convert to Curves. Expand the group it created in the Layers panel so you can see all the layers it creates for each letter, select them all go to the More menu and select Add to join them all into a single shape. You can move the shape to outside the group and delete the group layer.
To break the letters like shattered glass you can draw several lines (with a thin stroke) placing them carefully/judiciously over the text, go to the More menu and select Expand Stroke to expand them/convert them into shapes. Then select both the shape (the text) and the expanded lines (make sure the line layers are on the top of the text shape layer in the Layers panel) go to menu More and select Subtract. The resulting shape should look text shattered into several pieces. With this resulting shape selected go to menu More and select Divide to separate the shape parts into individual/independent layers/objects. You can then move/adjust their position individually to build the dynamic/movement effect.

You made my day, DM1 from Down Under :-). It works perfectly with files from the OMD E-M1. The files from OMD E-M1X cannot be imported, even not with the very recent iOS update 12.2. I hope there will be a minor update soon which solves this issue.

IYou need to create a pixel layer, fill the layer with 50% using grey scale slider and set the layer blend mode to Overlay. Select a brush and paint over the grey layer with black or white low flow low hardness. Better to use the Dodge and burn brushes on the grey layer as you can pick shadows and highlights.

You can set up screen recording on your iPad and sweep down and across from top right to open control centre to start/stop recording. Recordings are saved in Photo Album.
You have Hardness set to zero and you are painting white on a white fill layer. Delete the white fill layer. Select the ‘ Grey' layer before you start painting.

Thanks DM1. Your workflow description is detailed and to the point. It looks like a sound approach that I think I will adopt. It’s terrible that iPad users have to jump through these kinds of hoops just to keep up with their files, but Apple is Apple what can I say. 

iOS apps are a little different when it comes to file access/saving. This 'Workflow' works for me.
1. Start a project. This project now exists in the apps Sandbox.
2. Save a copy. (Document Menu/Save a Copy), navigate to cloud/iPad storage folder and 'Add’ to save. I use Documents (by Readdle), a free app, to create nested folders for each app and save on my iPad. Deleting Serif apps has no effect on these folders.
 3. Use the back arrow to return to Project screen and close the original (Open) project (3 bars menu/Close).
4. Tap + button and select Open from Cloud. Navigate to cloud storage folder and select previously saved file. You are now working on your file stored in  your choice of folder (not the apps Sandbox).
5. Make edits.
6. Save to update changes (Document Menu/Save). The Save menu is only available after Saving a Copy and then opening the saved copy.
 7. Close project.
 Next time you Open from Cloud the previous edits will be there

Both options are available on iPad version. 

Using the Colour Replacement brush is another option if speed/simplicity is required. Tolerance setting determines sensitivity to colour selected.

the ability to customize this would be awesome! I would personally love to be able to use the double tap function to switch between color swatches - for example, when masking, it would be helpful to quickly switch between black and white by double tapping the pencil. 

There are some options which aren’t available on iPad, but unless you tell us what you were going to suggest we won’t know whether it’s one of them!!
