Nothing controversial here ... finally completed my 78-page both hard and softcover Blurb photo book with Affinity Publisher (and all while learning how to use the program).
I'm really happy with how it turned out. Thanks, Affinity program designers, technicians, and trainers!

DanM got a reaction from Andreas Scherer in Printing? Anyone?
I have printed beautiful cards using Affinity Publisher. Much easier than printing them through Qimage. Also, I can save the design template for horizontal & vertical cards in different sizes.
The only tedious part is having to go through the color settings (telling the program to save the paper color profiles and print settings). I have to redo that each time I restart Publisher, though if I print different cards in one session, it is only necessary to do that once.
I have also just completed my first Blurb book in Affinity Publisher with terrific results.

DanM reacted to Helmar in HOW TO: Book editing in Affinity Publisher
    Hi,
this is a 12min video how I am blasting through the styling of a book in Affinity Publisher. I want to show you how easy it is to even edit mulit-hundred pages long books. I never thought it would be such a "blast" until I did it - as you can see in the video.
My suggestion if you come from Indesign or if you start with just plain text.
Set up your text styles first. Use the first chapter for it until you are happy - unless you already have a ready-made layout. Assign keyboard shortcuts where necessary. Set up your master pages, too. Don't apply them yet. Use a "running page" master page as your first page, because if you auto-add new pages (Shift-Option-Cmd Click), it will take the current master page as a template. Apply your special master pages for new chapters etc only after your text is formatted properly and flowing beautifully. Otherwise it will mess up your page layout. Apply sections last, too. So if you are afraid of throwing a 300-odd page book at Affinity Publisher, fear no more! If you do your homework (see above) first, the final formatting is a piece of cake.
    Cheers,
    Helmar
[Note: This is a not a polished video. It's just to share my joy of editing in AFP compared to InDesign. ]

    @Dan CThanks for the feedback.
I'm glad there was a workaround when I had the issue. I will check my Acrobat settings.
I'm loving Publisher and am happy that I gained a decent grasp on it (though with way more to learn) throughout this whole book-making process.

Posted recently something similar about the Crop tool remembering which Setting I've used.
I don't want to choose it each time when working with my pictures. I use the "Original Ratio" 99% of the time and I have to rechoose it always.  It always stays ons the default " Unconstrained"

You need at least 2 rows for your tools. The color-changer does not appear if your toolbox is 1-row.
BTW: really nice would be an option that the current palette is showing directly here underneath (as long as the space allows) for fast changing the color without the need of open the palette/color-panel.

Of course, but Photo is what we're talking about. It does not work the same as Photoshop, and Serif has no intention that it should.
It is, though, confusing that Serif allows Save to work for saving JPG, TIFF, and PNG, but does not allow Save As to work similarly. I think that either both Save and Save As should work, or neither.

I've been using Adobe Indesign to publish personal travel books for the past few years. The Blurb plugin and templates for Indesign provide much more control and utility than the Blurb apps. I would love to see Affinity Publisher provide the same level of Blurb integration and functionality. Please seriously consider Philippe Carly's recommendation. Thanks for the great apps!

I think you make some valid points in this post. I do not think that a software should per se exclude beginners or less experienced users. But there will be a learning curve for everyone. And for some steeper than for others.
I know, you are aware of the not finished documentation. But that's the point. APub is a huge project with a lot of ambitios goals. They have to accomplish this step by step. To me it is obvious that documentation can only be made once functionality is finished.
For myself I like to think about it this way: I am invited to some part of the developing process. I can try to find bugs. I can point out 'rough edges'. I can submit suggestions.
At the same time I am on my own to find my way around because all the official help is not finished yet. And there is this forum with a lot of information, help and questions. For the time being we have to work with what is available. And in doubt we can ask other forumsters.
With this in mind your post may be a valuable source of 'user feedback' to the developers. I am confident that someone at Serif takes note and eventually this powerfull but a little complicated concept of paragraph and character styles will work smoother
    Cheers,
    d.

Just found a better way to remove Character Styles from within a Paragraph Style (Style1 in this example). Select the text to change, click the hamburger next to the selected paragraph style, choose 'Apply "Style1" to Characters' (ignore the tick mark). Or do the same by selecting the text frame(s).

The "Reset Formatting" button goes some way to doing what I want but not all of the way.
For example, if I have formatted a paragraph with paragraph style "X" and then - maybe accidentally - applied character formatting "Strong" to a sentence or two (as in my earlier example), pressing the "Reset Formatting" button won't get rid of the "Strong" formatting as "Reset Formatting" doesn't "reset" character formatting. I'm left with the "Strong" character formatting and might not know how to remove if I added it by accident.
To add to that, if I then want to apply a different paragraph style "Y" to the paragraphs, the "Strong" style persists and often I don't want it to. Once I get more used to how Publisher works then I'm sure it will become second nature but, until then, I want to be able to 'blast away' all of the formatting I've already applied and re-apply a completely 'fresh coat' of a particular style.
Many experts will, no-doubt, be fine and dandy with how things are because they are used to doing things the way Publisher works but beginners need that extra bit of help.
I don't think Publisher is doing anything wrong, it's more of a case that people in my position - those that haven't learnt all the ins-and-outs of how it all works - sometimes need a "just do this and forget anything I've done earlier" option.

DanM reacted to Dave Harris in Can't find a quick way to override all formatting when applying a paragraph style
The intended behaviour for the Reset Formatting icon in the Text Styles panel is to reset the formatting to the current styles. It removes any local formatting that doesn't come from the styles. There are potentially two styles, for paragraph and character. Reset Formatting should have the same effect as reapplying both of them. If no text styles are applied, it does nothing. It's very much a text styles thing; it's label should be understood in the context of the panel it is in.
The control to the left of the Reset Formatting icon can be expanded. If you do that it should give a more detailed description of what formatting the text has. It will also make the effect of Reset Formatting more apparent. After clicking it, it should just have the names of the styles. We have had bugs in the past where specific formatting wouldn't clear; if that happens again please report it.
To reset formatting to the document defaults, you can use Edit > Defaults > Revert, or the Revert Defaults button in the top toolbar. This will also reset the text styles to whatever the defaults are. You can reset the defaults themselves with Edit > Defaults > Factory Reset. This works for all formatting, including text but not just text.

I think you say it on the spot that way
I hope someone from Affinity staff can look into this and confirm if this works as inteded or if there is a bug. Maybe you should post it as an option bug in the other forum.
In regard to documentation, please keep in mind that documentation (help, videos, tutorials) are still work in progress. Mentioning it in this thread may also be of help for the team.

It seems to me that the "Reset Formatting" button doesn't actually do what it says.
I would expect a "Reset Formatting" button to always reset all formatting back to the default without exception.
It doesn't say it's a "Reset Some Formatting In Some Cases Depending On What Formatting Has Been Applied In Some Specific Ways" button, it says "Reset Formatting" so that's what it should do (or it should be renamed).
The developers have given us a lot of control over what happens but I think the documentation - in the Help, in the names of the functions, and in the tool-tips - needs to be more precise so we can know which function we should use to achieve what we want to do in a consistent way. At the moment I don't understand what does what, and when, and I shouldn't need to experiment to figure it out for myself. Something should tell me exactly what a function does and doesn't do.
It's nice to have options, but not if you don't know the differences between them.

@dominik I tried to use the "half-circle-T" icon but couldn't get it to do anything. I tried clicking it when I had the text frame selected, nothing. I tried clicking it with the caret in a paragraph and no text selected, nothing. I tried clicking it with a paragraph selected, nothing. See attached GIF. Am I doing something wrong?
@Fixx I tried Alt-clicking the style - with frame selected, then with caret in text, then with paragraph selected - and I got nothing. That doesn't seem to be working for me either.
I've attached the afpub file in case it helps with diagnosis.
