Installation of Software and Updates
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the software it will check for updates and offer to download and install any available update. For the macOS release, in the application main menu there is an option "Check for Updates". Alternatively, you can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "download" button in there. Updates are installed automatically (or manually by installing the new version over the old) Previous builds do not need uninstalling first. New installations of paid software downloaded from the Affinity Store requires a product key and email pair to use.
Software downloaded from the Mac App Store, Microsoft Store and iPad store do not require a product key and are updated through the relevant store:
If you’ve purchased from the Mac App Store— updates are done automatically next time you run your software after it is available in the Mac App Store. However, you do need to be logged in with the same Apple ID you used to buy them. If this does not happen for you, open the Mac App Store app and go to the Updates page and then Store > Reload page or press CMD+R. This should hopefully force the update to show. Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world which can mean it may take up to 72 hours for your update to be available.
If you’ve purchased from the Microsoft Store— Microsoft Store updates are done automatically by the operating system (each time you start the application). If this does not happen for you, open the Windows Store app and click the three dots in the top right corner of the app and then go to Downloads and Updates. Click Get Updates. This should hopefully force the update to show.
If you’ve purchased from the Pad Store— Your Affinity iPad apps should update automatically next time you run them. However, you do need to be logged in with the same Apple ID you used to buy them. If the automatic update does not happen for you, go to the iPad Store app and go to Updates. Once you’re there, tap near the top of the screen where it states 'Updates' and then hold, pull down and then release. This should manually refresh the updates page. However, don’t contact us if the updates are not available for you yet—Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world and this can take up to 24 hours.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Ninjadoodle in Document resize with percentage
I believe that you can record macros for this using a method similar to the macro described here. However, the macro must use Filters->Distort->Equations to do the resizing. That means that you cannot choose the resizing algorithm; you're limited to whatever undocumented method that Distort->Equations uses.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Vauxhall60 in Print different from view on laptop.
Certainly screen viewing angle can be a factor, and other than always viewing with the same angle and from the same distance and under the same lighting I don't know of a solution to that when using a laptop.
However, two other big factors are whether you have color-calibrated your screen, and whether you are soft-proofing your image to see and adjust how it will print before you actually print it. Both of these are somewhat complex topics and I can't provide much advice on them.
There is an official Affinity video about printing on Windows that (I think) covers soft-proofing, or there may be one specifically about that.

walt.farrell got a reaction from John Rostron in Black and White no grey scale
My impression is that the request involves supporting files (open, export) with a one-bit per pixel format.
The threshold format you're talking about, dominik, would result in an 8-bit per pixel file where each set of 8 bits has the value 0 or 1, I think.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Ulysses in No way to batch resize photos in Affinity Photo (Mac) yet?
Yes, I think you can do it using that complex macro you mentioned above. It does have the potential disadvantage that you don't get to choose the resampling method that is used, but you should be able to use it in an Affinity Photo batch job to resize a set of images regardless of their orientation.
I agree that it would be better if Affinity Photo provided that capability as a built-in function, and also if Equations->Distort (used by that macro) provided a way to specify the desired resampling mechanism. But once you install the macro, using it should be about the same as using a Photoshop action, I think.

TIFF is also be a lossless format, though it will probably result in larger files than PNG.

walt.farrell got a reaction from AffinityAppMan in Online Manual SEARCHING KEYWORDS??
Not that I've found. But that site just has information from the built-in Help system. Instead of using it you could simply click on the Help button in Affinity Designer, then on Help.... and you'll have a searchable version.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Fixx in File Size after Exporting (Affinity Photo)
Think of it this way: you open a photo, and save it as JPEG with some quality lower than "best". This results in some lossy compression, a small file size, and an image which approximates the original. Call the original #1 and the saved, lower quality, smaller copy #2.
Starting with #2, as you may be doing, you can never recovery what was lost and get back to the quality present in #1.
Now you want to save a copy of #2, giving #3.
You can save it with lower than "best" quality, and get a file smaller than #2, and which only approximates #2.
Or, you could save #3 with best quality, and more exactly match #2. But in trying to more exactly match #2 you could end up with a file larger than #2.
Affinity is simply trying to create an output file that matches what's on your screen, and the fact that what is on the screen only approximately matches #2 isn't really relevant. Once you opened #2 you ended up with a file with a certain pixel dimension, no matter the quality of those pixels. It's the quantity of them, and the faithfulness (quality) of preservation that will determine the file size on disk.

This is probably the best YouTube video on the subject.
It is in French but well demonstrated. Of course, if your French is good enough. Ces't bon !

walt.farrell got a reaction from Sean P in 1.6.3.100 Photo Export Persona Problem Configuring Path Name
Today, I can't report it either, though it was quite consistent the other day. Sorry.
If I do manage to recreate it I'll save the file and upload for your examination.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Geedee in File(s) can not be opened as they are read only....
They're not Mac Only. Windows supports Smart Folders (saved searches).
And supposedly it supports file tags, too, but (a) only for some file types and (b) not in all applications and (c) I can't get them to work in Windows 10 even for some files that apparently should support them. But there are also 3rd-party tools for Windows that support file tagging.

walt.farrell reacted to R C-R in Saving presets
If it makes you feel any better about it, it took me a looooong time to figure that out ... & I have had to do that twice because the first time was so long ago that I did not remember what the trick was that made it work.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Chris J in 1.6.3.100 Photo Export Persona Problem Configuring Path Name
I'm not sure which beta introduced this, but I see the problem in 1.6.3.100 and do not see it in the released 1.6.2.97.
Open a file, then switch to the Export Persona, then switch to the Slices panel. Then click on the circle/triangle to get the dropdown that lets you configure your export options.
Click on the file name to configure additional properties, or on the path box. On the resulting popup, choose any variable in the table, click on it, and start to drag. The entire popup box disappears, leaving you no place to drag the variable to.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Gnobelix in Mehere Dateien gleichzeitig in Affinity Photo anzeigen
It is a new function in the Windows Beta, available since 1.6.3.98. From this post,
Before then, all you can do if you want to view multiple open photos at the same time is click on the tab and drag it away from the tab bar.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Phil_rose in Export Persona help
If you look at the scaling box in the slice panel, you'll see that it starts out at 1x. If you hover over it you get a tooltip that says you can choose a size scaling or an absolute size. Clicking on the pulldown you get some examples of the kinds of entries you can make, as shown in this screenshot:
When I entered 500w I got an exported image that was 500px wide and scaled proportionally for the height. Another obvious example there is 50h (should be 50px high, with width scaled proportionally) but I haven't tried that one..
I tried 750p (my original image is portrait mode, 1920x2560) and I ended up with a document 562px x 750px, so 750px tall.
Just for fun I tried 600w, 600h and got an image that is 600x600px square, and that contains all of the original image but oddly distorted.
So absolute dimensions certainly work, at least if you give width or height but not both

walt.farrell got a reaction from Phil_rose in Export Persona help
If you hover your mouse over the User Scale field you will get a field description (tooltip) which says the value you enter is used as an override when forming the pathname or writing descriptive information about the file, but it does not affect the actual size of the exported image.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Wosven in Export Persona help
Two more realizations about exporting to multiple locations (tested on Windows, but should conceptually work on Mac, too):
As I mentioned above, you can export to multiple locations, but they must all be subdirectories of a common directory. However, when you perform the actual export, and you get the Save dialog, you can specify the root directory of some drive. All directories on that drive are subdirectories of the root, so you can effectively save into any directories on that drive. Even better, Windows (and I believe Mac) implements the concept of symlinks. Using a symlink you can create what appears to be a directory (say, dir1) on one drive that is really a pointer to a directory (say dir2) on another drive. Combining these ideas you can, in one export operation, create files in any directories on any drives that you can access. Example: I have on drive E: a directory named Walt. I also have a drive F: and on F: I have a directory called Fred.
In the F:\Fred directory I create a subdirectory ExportF. In the E:\Walt directory I create a subdirectory ExportE. In E:\Walt I also create a symlink (technically a hard link, but a soft link might also work) called ExportF: mklink /J E:\Walt\ExportF F:\Fred\ExportF I then export two copies of an image, one (jpg) going to Walt\ExportE\ and the other (tif) going to Walt\ExportF\ On the Save dialog I specify the root of the E: drive. After the export completes, E:\Walt\ExportE contains my .jpg file, and F:\Fred\ExportF contains the .tif file.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Alfred in Export Persona help
You can export to multiple locations, but they must all be subdirectories of a common directory as @v_kyr mentioned a couple of posts above this.
To do it, first create your multiple output formats, by clicking on the appropriate + signs on the Slices panel. Then click on the slice/file names to set the additional parameters. I've highlighted the spots to click in red in this image:
Then, on the configuration dialog that pops up, simply insert the subdirectory name by hand into the path name by clicking before the blue box labeled "Slice name":
When you eventually click on the dialog to begin the export, you'll get a Save dialog where you choose the parent folder. In the example I've shown, the .jpg file will be saved in directory dir1 below whatever folder you choose in the Save dialog.

walt.farrell got a reaction from v_kyr in Export Persona help
I'm unsure if your problem is:
Figuring out how to export in two formats with one operation; or Figuring out how to specify the path name. I think from your screenshots that you've figured out (1). For (2), as someone said above, I think all you need to do is put a \ at the end of the name you have there now, though I would also suggest that you avoid spaces in your directory names.
And I would ignore the Batch Builder; I don't think you need the JSON stuff.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Alfred in Export Persona help
Good point, Alfred.
In my possible defense, I considered that xyz.jpg and xyz.psd are in a way different locations, as the original image is exported in two places.
And if Phil is having difficulty figuring out how to direct the output to two different directories in one Export operation, he can at least get them into one directory easily, and move them as a separate step. Thus it solves the basic problem, though I'll concede it does not help with the education aspect.

walt.farrell reacted to v_kyr in Export Persona help
Guys you have to learn to use a console too and how to navigate to certain directory locations with that (good old cd - change directory), if you only use GUIs, you'll eventually become dumbfounded one day.

File->Export will also allow you to export an image as a PDF. I think that the Export Persona is intended for more complex tasks.
