I'm not a Serif employee, but as I'm not sure how quickly one of them will respond: Yes, if you own both computers you can install your copy of the Affinity application on both of them, as long as they're the same OS (both Windows, or both MacOS).

walt.farrell got a reaction from Steps in PDF Export: What changes?
You can get a basic idea of what changed from the History panel. Basically (I think) if you have History entries since the last Save you'll be prompted to Save when you try to close the document.
That behavior is consistent with some other applications I've used. For example, opening a LibreOffice document and printing it will cause a similar prompt when you try to close it.

Yes, I'm sure. I believe, though, that subsequent to that post the Affinity team confirmed that Designer and Photo do not support linking, and those buttons are not supposed to be present in the UI for either 1.6 or 1.7. Linking is only a Publisher function.

If you select the Move tool, and click on the image in Designer, you should find a button on the Context toolbar that says "Replace Image".
If you're on Windows, and Designer 1.6.5.123 or later, then at the bottom of the file selection dialog, just above the input box for the file name, you'll see an option to either Link or Embed the replacement.
(The 1.7 beta of Designer provides an option in Document Settings that specifies whether placed images should be linked or embedded by default.)

No I don't think so, instead they have own drivers for most scanners (see here).

If you're running the 64-bit version of PSP that means that your scanner does not support 64-bit applications. (At least, according to the Help for PSP 2018.)

walt.farrell reacted to R C-R in Designer: Brush strokes, set style every single time?
If you draw a curve with the Pen Tool & then click on the pressure profile in the Context toolbar dropdown, you will see that it already has a pressure profile set. If you have not previously set a custom profile, it should look like this:

The profile was set when you drew the curve; in this instance it is just flat & uniform from end to end because that is the default profile. If you previously applied a custom profile to another curve, you will get that profile instead because the profile, like the stroke thickness, is a "sticky" setting that is retained until you change it.

walt.farrell reacted to MEB in Designer: Brush strokes, set style every single time?
    Hi Thomahawk, walt,
What these brush previews show is that they have a brush size variance set in brush properties and NOT that the stroke to which you applied them will look visually like them). So the differences in width's variance of these brushes will be more or less accentuated depending on the value set in the Size Variance slider - but - for this to happen the drawn stroke must have a pressure profile no matter how it was created.

Text frames contain stories. Text frames linked to each other contain a single story. Individual, non-threaded text frames each contain their own story.

Right. I already discussed this with their support. Of course there is no pressure curve present from handling with the mouse. But brush styles must apply a standard pressure curve automatically to curves who do not have one. Without that, brush styles are pretty confusing. You can not have a list of line/brush styles who are not universally applyable just on one click, it must instantly deliver what the style preview promises. In the end it is about having easy-of-use and a conformity for handling paths in general.

ok, so it seems the delete key is being handled inconsistently between tools - that is very likely a bug

The original Mac keyboard had a "backspace" key: https://www.macworld.com/article/2090522/unboxing-a-30-year-old-macintosh-128k.html#slide19
It was replaced with a "delete" key with the switch to the ADB connector: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_Macintosh_ADB_Keyboard.jpg
When the "extended" keyboards started coming out they added a "forward delete" key to do basically what the "delete" key does on Windoze-type keyboards.
All of Apple's documentation for a long time now has called them delete and forward delete, not backspace.
This is also in keeping with the Apple II series: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jean-paul-margnac/3800713644

I did some experiments yesterday, and you're right that a .tif file can't preserve history as a .afphoto file can. But to my surprise a .tif will preserve snapshots when you save the Affinity layers.

    Hi Walt,
    I am using WIndows 10 Pro 1803, 64-bit.
I found the following error message.
+Error: The cabinet file 'Main.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.
I had tried downloading the file twice the other day. Both files came back the same size with the same md5 hash (01e26aeb5c0a3f790f411360c341809f). I just tried redownloaing just now. It came back the exact same size but witha  different hash (b0d6079faadc4316a325286a27e17d55). Not sure exactly what happened, but the install worked this time round. Thanks for pointing me towards the logs.

walt.farrell reacted to MikeW in optical alignment
What Serif has implemented, Optical Margin Alignment, does work and it works properly. The samples in the Manual adjustment section, when the method is set to Manual, are just that, samples. You can add to them to your heart's content.
What Dave Harris has said is that Optical Kerning, ala InDesign, is not going to be implemented at this time, or maybe never. But that again is a separate issue from what your thread is all about.
As a test, I added my uppercase classes to a font I've designed for using the optical bounds OpenType Feature. If I were intending on actually implementing this feature in what will be the release version I would take also add in the appropriate lowercase character classes as well. The result when the Optical Margin Alignment is set to Font is in the screen shot below.

    It works as advertised.
I have not made a final decision whether I will actually add this feature or not as the only software that can make use of it currently Affinity applications and perhaps one or two applications I won't use for production (like Scribus).
InDesign's implementation of Optical Margin Alignment (OMA) is ill conceived in both implementation and control (and in fact is not on by default). QuarkXPress' is superior, but, like APub's, requires more user input due to the fact font support is poorly represented and so I feel the Manual setting will be the most used. However, I have worked for many publishers, from small to large, and none of them have OMA as a house style. None. Most newspapers don't. While I have typeset some books with OMA, only one ever went to print with it on.
As regards Optical Kerning, with a decently kerned font, this setting is generally not even a good one to set. No matter how I am using type, ID makes decisions with its Optical Kerning I would never make. Small type can be crowded together, large type can be set too loose for my tastes. And that's kinda the point—we all most often see type different and would make different decisions. Again, here is where QXP shines as one can change the kerning pair values for a given font and so will always use the edited values for that font without ever actually editing the font. This is how this issue should be resolved. At least, in my opinion. Which is worth every penny you paid for it.

    Hi Walt
Apologies for the late response, its a long weekend in South Africa so in that festive mode.
Update to the designer not installing: I've reloaded windows 7 onto my pc...(fresh install), installed affinity again , and it now works perfectly. I've decided to run it on windows 7 ( for now) , because I suspect that the switching between the two operating platforms corrupted the Affinity Designer software.
Will monitor , and give feedback later.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Michail in PDF Export problem
I think I've seen a variety of fonts involved. I doubt it would explain a long export time; that's probably based on the complexity of the file (layers, live filters, etc.) in most cases.

I think you'll need to contact Serif using one of their email addresses to arrange that. Someone from their team will probably respond on Monday.
Don't make your purchase until you hear from them, as a standard purchase ends up tied to your email address or Windows account.

Looks like a paragraph decoration. That could come from the settings in the Text Style, or from the Character Paragraph Panel.
