Can you provide the file here? If you can't do it publicly, Chris can provide a private upload link.

    Oval,
As is so often the case you are technically correct. It was not, as you say, explicitly said on the forums or elsewhere that we were not launching in 2018. However, if you follow the forums (which I think you do) you will see that many Affinity Publisher beta testers are telling us that it is not yet ready to be sold with it's current functionality. For example we are modifying master page object functionality to better meet customer expectations and our implementation of "linked" (monitored)  images is not meeting expectations either. So if we had launched with the current offering we would have been rightly criticised for not listening. So better that the free public beta continues for a bit longer while some of these extra changes are made than we launch now and are reviewed and found wanting for creating longer documents.
Also our file interchangeability means that Affinity Publisher (1.7) really cannot be launched until Affinity Designer 1.7 and Affinity Photo 1.7 are the current release, so it is dependent on those timelines also.
We have been using our flagship information site affinityspotlight.com to keep people abreast of changes and so if you want to know where we would most likely make any announcements then just monitor that.

The Affinity applications do not ask the user; they just register themselves to handle certain file types.
I have other applications that do ask, and/or that provide a Preferences setting. I prefer that approach, and it would evidently be less confusing for some users.

Yes it does work. I didn't realise you needed to double click on the table to bring up the headers.
I was expecting it to work similar to another program where the column widths could be changed just by dragging the cell borders around.
    Thanks

You should be able to edit column widths directly in the table. At least I can, on Windows. With the table frame selected, and the column headers showing, position the mouse cursor over the column edge you want to adjust, and when it becomes a double-ended arrow you can drag right or left to shrink or enlarge the column.

walt.farrell reacted to DavidSilverSteel in Four Column Text Box Greyed Out
Thank you Walt for your reply.
First of all, yes it was the text font that showed up grey, yet the frame of the text worked flawlessly. The text flowed through it. The text colour showed a black fill with no line colour, exactly as all the other frames. selecting the frame showed it as a blue (selected) frame and I was able to edit the text.
Thinking through the history of this problem, this was my first use of multi column text frames with flowing text in them. When I started the document, I made two master pages, one called Master A and the second was called "Four column" as the MASTER contained a four column text frame. As I went along, I decided that it was more convenient to have just one master page - Master A without the text frame, - and to create a text frame on each normal page as I created them. Today I decided that this was the root of the problem as I had deleted the "Four Column" master page and applied all the pages to Master A.
I guessed that the text frame on the faulty page had an (invisible and defunct) link to the - now - non existent "Four Column" Master page which was causing it to be greyed out.  I therefore deleted the faulty frame, the text flowed straight to the next page and I created a replacement four column frame direct on to the normal page. This has solved all the problems with the document and I presume that I had diagnosed the problem correctly.
Thank you for your help and interest in my problem.
Kind Regards and a Happy New Year to you.
    David

I'm not sure which one is right but It probably should close. I'm guessing if 1.6 and Windows closes it, we've accidentally changed something.

The Resource Manager is also missing. It's only in Publisher.
I'm not sure that Serif intends for Photo and Designer to support linked files, other than the extent needed for compatibility with Publisher's .afpub files. But someone from  the Affinity team would need to comment on that. But clearly part of the processing for linked files is there, and part isn't. As we're working with a beta we can't be sure whether more should be present, or more should be missing

Sounds like you have View > View Mode > Clip to Canvas enabled. If you disable it you can paint outside the main canvas area and into (or beyond) the bleed area. (I'm not sure it should be necessary to disable that option, as I think it would work better if the definition of "Canvas" for clipping purposes included the bleed area.

walt.farrell got a reaction from Steps in Edit With : My Suggestion for the Affinity Range
Specifically talking about Publisher, I think (but can't be sure) that the intended method of just working on one object on the publisher page will probably be to switch to the Photo or Designer Persona, using the persona buttons (which are currently inactive).
A bigger problem with Edit with Photo (or Designer) from Publisher, if I remember my prior tests correctly, is that Photo and Designer can't navigate between Publisher pages. So once you get to Photo or Designer, you have one page visible. I don't remember which one.

Thanks Walt, you have put me on the right track. I placed the Dutch dictionaries from Libre Office in a folder nl-NL within the folder C:/Program Files/Affinity/Publisher Public Beta/Resources/Dictionaries/ . That works!

    That doesn't happen. 1.7 can open 1.6 files or 1.5 or ....
However, 1.6 cannot open 1.7 files, just as 1.5 couldn't open 1.6 files.
And since the iPad and desktop applications are supposed to be compatible, iPad users who also use the desktop app probably won't want to upgrade to 1.7 on the desktop until Serif releases 1.7 for the iPad, too.

I tried this again this morning. I WAS able to get studio panels to dock in an existing column on either side. Although this worked fine today, for whatever reason, it was not behaving like this when I created the topic. Trust me, I tried all sorts of ways to dock those panels. I'll keep an eye on them to see if the non-docking repeats itself. Thanks, Walt, for your reply.

My finnish hyphenation dictionary started with words "charset ISO8859-1". I looked those Hunspell-dictionaries and they have only "ISO8859-1" without word "charset". So I removed word "charset" and now Publisher is not crashing. Hyphenation is working, I think, but I have not tested deeply yet...

If the Mac version and the Windows version behave similarly, hover your mouse or stylus over it and you should get a tooltip explanation, just as with most of the other icons and input areas.

No, I never found anything more. The pulldowns in the dialog are fairly clear about the options you have in them.
But you raise an interesting question about your experiences. In a quick test that does not happen for me. So, it would help to have a sample file that demonstrates this phenomenon. It would also help to know which Affinity application you're using, and whether you're on Mac or Windows.
(I have a vague memory of having read something about 1x, 2x, 3x being intended for different screen resolutions/sizes, which (if I'm remembering correctly) might help explain what you're seeing. But I don't know what/where I read about that. Sorry.)

No, @walt.farrell, it doesn't work for me either.
In my first article I assumed that you don't have the controls.  But everything seems to be there.
In my second post I explained that the search for formatting never worked properly for me. After my report at that time I did not pursue it then further.
Possibly it worked in the meantime. In version 206 the click on the button "Find" or pressing the enter key is completely ineffective (with this kind of search).

Just a thought: for both Mac and Windows, it might be easier to define a new user and login to that new user in order to do the workbook exercises. Then you don't mess around with any of your existing Affinity settings.

walt.farrell got a reaction from AncientWire in Select All and transparent background for png
With a text cursor in the frame, Ctrl+a or Select > Select All both work for me.
I would normally expect someone to use Designer for this kind of project, not Publisher. However, it can work in Publisher, too.
One method: First, make sure your document has a transparent background. You can set that during File > New by checking the box on the Color tab, or later via File > Document Setup (again, on the Color tab). Then, when exporting, use the PNG-24 preset.
Another: Without setting "transparent background" if you select all the text, then on the Export dialog use the Area option "Selection without background" this should also work. I'd still recommend PNG-24 as the preset.
Note that for either of those, if you do want some kind of colored background you can set that using the More... dialog during Export, and specifying a color via the Matte option.
