  1. You can set your margins and then start experimenting with both word spacing and letter spacing. I usually set type (both word and letter spacing) somewhat tighter than the type designer does. James Felici has an outstanding book on typesetting (The Complete Manual of Typography) that will really help give you much more control over the appearance of your type. And it will make your type read much better. You might also look on the internet for any magazine articles that Felici or other qualified typesetters have written. Hope this helps.
  2. Thanks for the suggestion PixelPest but I'm afraid that didn't work. I'm wondering if Affinity just simply doesn't allow swatches to be made from multicolored objects.
  3. Is it possible to create a swatch from the attached sample? I have tried various approaches but am unable to create a swatch. Because of the art upon which I am working, a swatch of this item would be immensely useful. If a swatch cannot be created is there some sort of workaround? Thanks so much. This forum is outstanding and I really appreciate all of the contributors and their wise and thoughtful contributions. Bob Tri Color AP.afpub
  4. CONGRATULATIONS on getting Affinity Publisher into beta release! I downloaded it (Mac) but when I go to launch and click on the icon...nothing happens. I'm not sure what to do and I really want to start working with this exciting new program. Any help will be much appreciated. Bob
  5. OR...Can any of our Affinity genius's figure out a work-around for mockups in Affinity. I suspect that there are quite a few Affinity users that would benefit from this. Just hoping... Bob
  6. Hi ali83, A great start can be made with the following books: Before & After Page Design by John McWade Before & After for Graphics and Business by John McWade The Non-Designers Design Book by Robin Williams The Non-Designers Type Book by Robins Williams Both author's books are easy reading and give excellent information for newbies. Also, you might want to subscribe to John McWade's Before & After Newsletter. It is outstanding. Good Luck on your new quest, Bob
  7. R C-R, you never cease to amaze me! Your depth of knowledge is always very helpful. I ran all the options you mention and still things aren't working correctly. Everything was working just fine until I updated to 1.6. I've not added any new programs, made adjustments, etc. I deleted the apps and re-downloaded but that did not help. So I'm wondering if the fact that I'm on Lion 10.7.5 could be an issue. Also, I'm not getting any notices on my welcome screen for the bonus downloads. So I'm not sure what to do or where to go next. Appreciate all the help and comments, Bob
  8. Well, that didn't solve the issue. Do you think I could do any long-term harm if I simply ignore this? I certainly don't want to corrupt any files. Thanks for your help, Callum Bob
  9. Thanks, Callum for the quick reply. When I go to File there is no Exit listing. Bob
  10. I just downloaded AF and AP 1.6. Now whenever I quit the programs I get a screen that says the program quite unexpectedly. I turned off my computer and restarted. The same thing happens. What can I do to stop this from occurring? Thanks, Bob
  11. Hi Tom You might try applying a 1 pixel (or less) of Gaussian Blur. If that doesn't work try applying 1 pixel of Noise. (maybe the two together.) Hope this might be of some help. Bob
  12. All fonts have a space band on both sides, so I'm not sure that you can accomplish this the way you want to. This is one of those instances where you should do a visual alignment to get the results you seek. Bob
  13. Hi MEB, I'm afraid the problem is still there. Strange! Although when I save in different modes it does look a little different. Thanks, Bob
  14. Hi MEB, I downloaded the tiff from the forum. Looks good--no pink pixels. But as soon as I placed it into InDesign--the problem returned. It also occurs when I open it in Preview. I'm running AP 1.50 on a Mac OS 10.7.5. I'm not going to take anymore of your time now but if it occurs in the future I'll get back to you. Thanks so much for all you are doing for/with Affinity. Bob
  15. Hi MEB, Can you tell me what is going on here? I'm thinking this might be an AP bug, but if not, what is the solution? Thanks, Bob
  16. Well, I guess my attachment didn't make it. I'll try again. 20170428_155304-ARotate3 12.40.00 PM.tiff
  17. I received a Photoshop file of a group of boxes. It was RGB so I converted it in AP to CMYK. No matter how I exported it, random pink pixels showed up along the edges of the boxes. (There is no background as the art is being placed over other art.) I asked the other designer to convert to CMYK and resend the art. The PS file looks fine but I had to do a slight rotation--and the trouble started over again. No matter what choices I make when exporting, I get those random pink pixels. I'm exporting as a tiff but nothing is working. Is this a bug? I'm having to use the PS file and rotate in InDesign (bad practice, I know) but AP simply won't work. Any suggestions for future projects? Thanks, Bob
  18. Outstanding, Brett. Makes me want to go reread The Wind in the Willows. Bob
  19. When I've done banners I make the art 1/4 size and save at 600dpi and send a pdf to the printer. I've used different printers and in every case there has been no problem either technically or quality-wise. I don't know if this fits your workflow but hope it might give you some ideas. Bob
