WKansepa got a reaction from Thiagarajan in Alignment inconsistencies
    I eat humble pie…
We are so used to Adobe's way of doing things that we take it for granted that their way is the only way. Armed with this deeply ingrained belief, we easily overlook some of the the things Affinity has so niftily implemented into their software to produce same results acquired in Adobe Illustrator. For example when you have multiple objects selected that need aligning, Illustrator's "Align to Key Object" functionality is easily replicated in Affinity Designer if you enable "Show Alignment Handles" on the toolbar.
Adobe's sometimes aggressive marketing propagates a truly false narrative that theirs is the the only true way… Reader be wary.

In this case, if you select the Curve layer and then set the Fill Mode to Alternate (via the Layer menu) you should be able to use the Geometry functionality as required.
If you type fill mode into the Help search you will find more information about this, with a special note about imported Illustrator objects.

WKansepa reacted to Ash in Blend mode keyboard shortcuts
    Apps: All
Platforms: Windows, macOS and iPad (requires keyboard)
Keyboard shortcuts have now been added to change the blend mode of the current layer(s), or paint brush tool.
Holding Shift with + or - will go to the next or previous blend mode in the list. Additionally, you can use any of the shortcuts in the attached table to change immediately to a specific blend mode. These can also be customised (as well as assigning shortcuts to other blend modes where a default shortcut hasn't been given) within preferences.

This will change the blend mode of the currently selected layer(s) (in all apps, all platforms including iPad with keyboard attached), unless you are using the Paint Brush Tool (Pixel or Photo persona) in which case the shortcuts will change the blend mode of the current brush.

Please leave any feedback or notes of unexpected behaviour for this new functionality in this thread.

Workaround: Drag the panel from its dock + drag its corners to resize it, if wanted to full screen size. Then switch from small thumbnails to medium to get the page thumbnails displayed in a grid rather than a vertical list.

WKansepa reacted to GarryP in Should changing the DPI of the document change the size of a document page?
In Publisher 2.0.3, I have a document with a page size of 100x100mm at 300DPI.
If I then change the DPI to 72 my page is now 416.667x416.667mm.
See attached video – V1 first, then 2.0.3.
This can’t be right, can it?
This doesn’t happen in Publisher V1, nor does it happen in Designer V1 or V2 (haven’t checked Photo).
Am I just doing something silly, or am I missing something important?
(I did a quick search but couldn’t find anything relevant.)

@Bobby HendersonI just wanted to point out that to achieve a temporary zoom akin to Adobe's, you need to press Spacebar first and then Control key in any Affinity application. Coming from Adobe it somehow feels counterintuitive but it works.

WKansepa reacted to Bobby Henderson in Variable fonts support
There might be some individual variable typefaces that seem gimmicky, but that's a subjective judgement.
I, for one, utterly detest the Arial typeface. I think it's harshly ugly looking, especially when set next to a far more "neutral" sans like Akzidenz Grotesk or Helvetica. That's my subjective judgment on it. My hatred for Arial is extended by all of its horrible over-use. It's the default font in many applications. In the sign industry Arial is perhaps the most misused and abused typeface there is. So many hacks out there just love artificially squeezing and stretching it to force-fit it into a tight space. That makes an already ugly typeface even more ugly. The tyranny of that typeface (and poor quality graphic design in general) helps fuel a growing anti-signs movement in many city governments.
Variable fonts can help fight some of that problem. I have a few "work horse" variable typefaces in my collection that come in very handy when I'm working with very demanding space limitations. A single variable font file with weight and width axes can yield many thousands of possible combinations. The results look far more graceful and professional than taking a stock, static font and artificially distorting it to squish it into a space.

Great improvement with guides - Alt clicking to delete GREAT - Shift to snap ACE 🤩
I have a couple of suggestions (I'm guessing someone here must have already thought of): When clicking on a guides measurements in guide manager, it would be really helpful if guides where nudge-able with the arrow keys. also if the guide on the page would be highlighted when clicking on a measurement so you can get a clearer idea which guide you want to edit, rather than the current behaviour of having to move a guide on the page and try to spot which measurement moves in guide manager

WKansepa reacted to JariH in Designer - construction snapping with nodes
    Hi
I wish to have snapping option to the midpoint of curves in node tool. Snapping works with a single line segment, but not with poly lines or curves.

Snap.m4v   Please add a tick box ☑️ in Node Tool for turning node snapping on or off. More convenient than toggling individual snap options one by one.

Hi everyone, I've been tinkering with Affinity Designer on the Windows and iPad platforms for a little while. I first bought a copy of Designer during one of those 50% off pandemic-related discount sales; I recently upgraded to V2. I primarily work in the sign industry, mostly designing permanent electric signs, but also a variety of other things (vehicle wraps, billboard faces, way-finding sign systems, temporary banners, etc).
I use a variety of graphics applications, some general purpose and others that are specific to the sign industry. Most of my work is done within Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW; I've used both since the early 1990's. I've used other applications like Deneba Canvas and Macromedia Freehand in the past. I occasionally play around with Inkscape on the PC or Vectornator on my iPad. It doesn't hurt to see what other applications are offering and how they stack up to my "daily driver" software.
Affinity Designer was an easy addition, thanks in part to the really low price. I have to work with a pretty good amount of client-provided artwork. Some artwork is professionally designed assets from major companies. Then there is artwork from small businesses, created by owners or employees whose primary job is not doing graphic design. More often that not those assets need varying degrees of work to be made production ready. With Affinity Designer being very affordable the potential is there for it to be adopted by more and more "casual" users. So I think it's important to be up to speed with the application just in case I start receiving afdesign files from clients. It's often easier to work with customer provided artwork in its native application environment than it is to import it into a rival piece of software.

I truly agree that an "eye" or checkbox would be better than this "dot". Maybe red for layer off and green for layer on.
In addition, wtf did they do to the tool icons. They appear as little more than flat cartoonish icons now; reminds me of my Paint-Shop Pro days long ago. The version one tool icons had more depth and looked more professional; at least to me anyway. Please SERIF bring them back but keep all of the functionality of V2. And let's use a "chain link" icon for linked layers. I hate having to open layer-groups to see just which layers are inside.
Sorry for the rant on the reply to your concerns

I beg to differ. I have built a sustainable small business using publisher.
After my husband died suddenly leaving me with four small children to support. I purchased all 3 Affinity apps during their sale for less than the price of 1 month of Adobe apps.
I had little skill or experience having been mainly a housewife until this point. After a lot of "blood, sweat and tears" (and lots of cursey words) I learned all I could about the applications. Launched my business, and here I am a few years down the line. A small business owner able to support myself and children.
Probably not a "professional" according to your standards, but certainly a professional to those I have been able to support.
I will forever be grateful to Affinity for their generous affordability, and numerous tutorials available during what was a horrendous time.
And also SERIF during all the hubub and negativity here at the minute, I hope this post will highlight the hope that was brought to one small family.
Wise words my grandfather taught me- "A poor workman will always blame his tools."

I remember reading a staff post last year or so – I think it was even a reply to one of my own threads/feedbacks/bug reports on the topic – acknowledging that the code for boolean operations is somewhat suboptimal in v1, and thus implying that it's the reason why many long time requested features haven't been added yet by then. That code was apparently fixed or even rewritten for v2, which is likely also why we've finally got the first iteration of vector warping, and can expect many more of such features and improvements in upcoming free updates for a few years to come.
So keep in mind, folks: this is still just v2.0.0. The future is bright.

WKansepa reacted to Medical Officer Bones in Possible ongoing concerted attack on Affinity 2 on these forums
I have noticed that the majority of negative and "disappointed will not upgrade" threads since V2 was released are all started by new accounts. There seems to be a recurring pattern: focus on a single missing feature that's been requested for a longer time or on the new Windows installation method. Or undermine the new features.
Quite a few also mention they will not invest in v2 further and insist they are loyal, but disappointed users. Or "I am really interested, but..." then say they cannot purchase the software until that X feature, that the Y commercial option happens to have, is added. Or they mention they will not upgrade. "It's a promising release, but we should wait it out". "Why isn't feature X implemented yet! Outrageous!".
All of them are thread starters. All seem focused on one thing: focusing on generating negative feelings about V2 and the Affinity products. And all of them are created by accounts that were set up by new accounts following the V2 release. Some use older accounts that were inactive for a long time.
And these accounts often respond to other complaints if that thread is not gaining enough traction.
If I were the moderators, I would investigate if a concerted attack is going on to undermine the v2 release. It seems rather suspicious.
I thought about listing examples, but I think that it becomes quite obvious for moderators once spotted.
