Right. Bad example. But you get my drift.

This kind of explains what I mean.

While using the Move Tool, with your clipping mask selected, check Lock Children in the Context Toolbar – see attached image.
If you cannot see the Context Toolbar then use menu “View → Show Context Toolbar”.

Can we see a screen shot of the layers panel? Name the appropriate layers The Mask and The Content. Double click on the name in the layers panel to rename them.
EDIT: GarryP has much better advice.

I’ve attached a quick video showing the process – with children locked, then not locked, then locked again.
If you are doing something differently then you will have to tell us exactly what you are doing, and what's happening, with good screenshots, or give us a video.

Okay, finally go it. The checkbox was checked from the beginning and it still scaled the content. I had to un- and re-check it. Jeez.
You should be able to use a key-modifier to switch to a sub-selection tool and just select whatever object you want. This workflow is unbelievably cumbersome.
Thanks a bunch for all the help! And sorry for venting.

Thank you, I was having the same issue. While the way you outlined is nice, it would really be useful to be able to use the align tools for nodes as well as objects. This is something I used a LOT in Illustrator and I am missing it here. But, again, thank you for the information.
