peter reacted to Willabong in Introduce Yourself
Hi everyone! I am from South Wales UK, And have used Serif products since the company was first formed many years ago. When AD was released I bought it for my imac, and will be buying APh and AP (publisher) when it is released.
I must admit that AD is a world ahead of it's PC equivalent (DrawPlus), not that DrawPlus is no good, it is a brilliant piece of software in it's own right, but AD is the next generation in graphics design!
My expertise is in 2D Graphics and Photo correction and repair, I also dabble in Web Sites and desktop publishing, I have ALL the Serif programs on my PC, and hope soon to have All the Serif Affinity programs on my imac.

peter reacted to Shmoo in Affinity Designer + future apps listed at Lynda.com
Maybe this is a bit silly to ask but I'm a real fan of Lynda.com and the way they teach people how to use software with essential training video's.
Is there maybe some opportunity that the Affinity people can reach out to Lynda.com and provide them with a top designer who knows Affinity Designer inside out. I would really like to have some sort of training course about this software. Tutorials are create and very helpful (thanks) but I think when you really want to start doing things right you need a solid understanding of all the settings, tools and layouts before you can start creating stuff..
I bought Affinity Designer at launch day and to be honest I haven't got the most out of it. When I see video's like this show up at Vimeo I feel like really stupid not knowing such a great feature is part of the app and I'm not using it.
When someone professional teaches you all the essentials you can't miss out on these features and will never forget to use them because they become part of your workflow.
Thanks,
Edit; changed feature to future in topic title.
Edit 2.
Update, released.

That, sir, is a very pleasing, exquisitely designed logo. I'd be a very happy customer... and if you happen to have any more of that chorizo knocking around you can send it this way, haha! ;)

Hello Renate83,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
I agree with David. Hands/feets are one of the most complicated parts to draw in human anatomy.
Great work ^_^

Hi there,
I'm Olaf, graphic designer from Poland. I have finally bought Affinity Designer after beta testing. I wanna thank all Affinity creators - this is my best buy ever. I can finally throwaway all the benzodiazepines I had to take every time I was using Illustrator. The next step is the Affinity Photo - love it!
Thanks!

peter reacted to TonyO in First Exercise on Designer, Work In Progress
Ahhhh i see how it works. This still trips me up since the problem i have is skipping the whole "select outline or fill first" step and jumping right to clicking on a color.
Maybe a fix would be to have the default as is, but allow for us to turn on "left click fill/ right click outline" as a default behavior in the preferences. When this is activated, the outline/fill indicator which is selectable and layered, could instead look like the attached mockup. Since its not layered, it wouldn't need to be clickable, and it would lower confusion making it not clickable while this behavior is active.
Made a mockup of how this could work, as well as how to select your mode. Obviously I'm no UI designer. But this would work great in the Wheel and Box views on the selector options, as well as swatches. The only place i could see this not working is on color sliders, but that way could default to the way it works now.

Hi TonyO,
fantastic sketch. This is tutorial material. The greyed-out sketch, would be very useful for newbies to hone their skills on.
I like your colour ring mockup, works for me!
MattP: don't PUNish yourself over the bad jokes; some of us actually enjoy them.

Despite some missing features, despite some bugs, despite not having much experience with this kind of software:
I really like Affinity Designer, it's a software that you can immediately get comfortable and productive with, and you totally deserve to be in the spotlight!
And the fact that you appear to be listening to your users regarding bugs and features basically ensures your long-term success, at least I very much hope so!
Keep up the good work :-)

Hello everyone. Absolutely loving Affinity Designer, and the photo beta looks amazing already. Can't wait for the publisher to come out too. I use InDesign but it is prohibitively expensive so excited about a decent alternative.

peter got a reaction from MattP in Got DrawPlus X6 on Mac. Reasons to change???
To use a cliched analogy, this is the 6 weeks holiday between leaving primary school and joining secondary school. Old friends and routines versus strangers and the great unknown. If you feel that strongly about Serif, then you're in good company, devs and users alike. As time passes by, AD's toolbox will grow (pasteboard area for me). Be brave young Jedi...

peter reacted to raymondemery in Shading with Gaussian Blur
I've been focusing on shaing and coloring techniques in Affinity Designer lately. With this Blue Cobalt Shot Glass, I used gaussian blur, layer blending modes (Color Burn and Average) and opacity to acheive the effect that I was looking for.
What methods would you use?
UPDATE 3/15/2015
Thank you for all of the great input.
I'm including the following to this post:
The original image I used for inspiration My .afdesign file so you can see the layers Further Explanation (What I was trying to acheive)
My goal was to make this illustration as "real" as possible. I've been expirementing with Gaussian blur, gradients, blending modes and opacity to acheive realistic highlights and shading.

peter reacted to paulears in Got DrawPlus X6 on Mac. Reasons to change???
I'm in exactly the same position - I've been a Serif user for over 20 years, and use Adobe cc, but use Drawplus and web plus because they work well for me. In draw, the critical things are scaling, dimensions and plan type usage, which it really does well. Since I upgraded to yosemite on my macbook, via Parallels, it's gone badly wrong, and windows is very unpredictable and amazingly slow, so using draw is now out of the question - and I miss it. As it stands, I quite like the look and feel of Affinity, but I was very sad to see it cannot do what Draw does. As I have a subscription to Adobe for Premiere and Photoshop, which I use daily for work, I could use AI - but that doesn't do what Draw does either - so I continue to use draw, and will buy the upgrade to the new one. I just wish I could do what it does on my mac.

cartoonmike for the Stan Lee method ronninemcbride for the video method paolo for the all powerful brushes methos (that's King Paolo, if you're asking) Sunset for water colours me for the wordplay and tracing method not forgetting MattP for the ever so simple but ever so powerful hints and denironaut, eejits etc for the smile inducing art, etc. Seriously this forum is like an Arran sweater: close knit, fit for purpose, tough, enduring, classy and an absolute pleasure to be part of art. Affinity; the clue is in the name.
